Rating: Summary: Easy installation! Review: Installed easily and worked with 2 Windows 2000 machines, out of the box. Worked immediatly with Verizon DSL, even though Verizon don't offer phone support for routers. No firmware updates needed or anything like that. However - basic knowledge of networking under Windows 2000 is required!
Rating: Summary: Works for a non tech type Review: I'm not technical and I'm not even sure which product meets my need, but from the description it looked like what I needed. It worked, I have cable modem service to both my PC's. I did as much as I could from the instructions, then called for phone service. Linksys was able to help me finish the job in a few minutes. I still would like to know it I can network my pc's together using the same devise.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Product! Review: Easy to install, easy to use, reliable, and incredibly functional! I have a DSL service that required me to use Enternet - a really flakey piece of software for windows (which also prevented me from using my DSL connection with my Linux box). I no longer need Enterflake since this router does PPPoE authentication -- and it worked on the first try, something that's never happened to me when changing something with my DSL connection! But it's not just easy to use, it's also loaded with cool features: DHCP server, firewall, supports DMZ host connection, site history logging, IP filtering, VPN support, you can even change the MAC address on the router! This is the best product I have ever purchased for my PC (not to mention it's only 100 bucks). Hats off to Linksys!
Rating: Summary: Not a great product. - Bloated with useless features. Review: Many know that I've been building networks for many, many years. I did not like this device and returned it promptly. I do not recommend it. It is bloated with many useless features. The basic features I wanted in a DSL router were obfuscated by features that are useless. Lots of fluff. Little utility. Do not buy.
Rating: Summary: This product may not support IPSec or VPN as advertised. Review: Contrary to the Linksys product's documentation, and the information on the product's website, this unit did NOT support Check Point VPN-1 SecuRemote client behind the unit's firewall. The DMZ function was also useless with my VPN client software. Linksys Tech. Support was completely helpless. // I purchsed an Asante' FR3004 and had it up and running and supporting my VPN client software in under 5 Mins. // I sold my Linksys unit to a friend who only needed functionality for standard websurfing and e-mail which the Linksys unit does support nicely. If you need advanced routing capabilities, this Linksys router probably should be avoided.
Rating: Summary: Not a bad router Review: I've been using this for a while now and it's worked quite well. No problems using with my cable modem or with my Linux box. I've not figured out how to telnet in (if that's even possible) but I've had no trouble otherwise.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: I am a semi-techie, and I was able to install the router and network my two computers within about 15 minutes start to finish. Everything works GREAT! It has never hung up -- not even once. I really like having a hardware firewall, now, too -- my Norton Internet Security program confirms that there have been no breaches. * * * * * Five Stars!
Rating: Summary: Easy to set up but likes to act up sometimes Review: When I first got this product I was amazed at its ease of set up with a web interface, and the speed with which I networked my computers together. However, this product does sometimes go AWOL, I've had it a week now, and I've needed to reset it twice as the internet connection stopped responding. Still its working again now, and the speed of my connection has improved considerably.
Rating: Summary: Trying Set-up Review: After a few false starts, I was able to get this router to work great. I am not sure how or why I had problems, or how or why the problems went away. I have used it both on DSL and now cable. It works better on Cable. I actually have a Win 98, Win 2000, Win NT and an iMac all hooked up to it. The documentation that was included is sketchy at best and the online help is not worth looking up. The hold time for technical support gave me enough time to fix it myself, so I guess support did work.
Rating: Summary: I don't know what these people are complaining about! Review: I've purchased 3 of these over the past 18 months, for my parents, myself, and a friend. I've NEVER had 1 second of trouble with ANY of them. Maybe these people complaining on here got bad ones somehow, but I haven't seen these problems. No lockups at all. However - Every cable and dsl modem I have ever seen or spoken to anyone about occaisionally DOES lock up. No exceptions. I live in the boonies, and electricity isn't very clean, there are frequent dips, spikes, and outages. When the power starts flaking, you can bet the dsl modem will lock up, everything else runs like a charm. Sometimes it locks up for no aparent reason at all. My parents cable modem like clockwork will freeze once a month. My dsl modem generally makes it 2 or 3 weeks excluding power problems. Cable modems tend to need to be powered off for about 20-30 minutes, then turned back on and allowed to reset. My ADSL modem can be powered off and back on again, and it will take a few minutes of blinkinlights and reset itself. Since my isp (and the others I've setup) uses DHCP, after a connection is broken like that a new connection needs to be made and a new ip address assigned. When using one of these, it's the router that connect to the internet/isp - not your pc! So when I need to reset the dsl modem, I also power down everything else, including the router. I power on the dsl modem, let it do its thing, and only after it has finished do I power on the router. When the router turns on it will log onto the isp, get an ip address, gateway, etc. Then any computer in the house can be turned on again, and get a new ip thru DHCP, and surf away. I have a hub in another part of the house connected to this router. Between me and my roommate we have 5 desktop machines connected to the internet and each other via this router/hub arrangement(with up to 5 operating systems too, some machines are dual or triple boot). We also each have a laptop that we connect sometimes as well. There are NEVER any problems with the internal LAN, even if the dsl modem is wiggin all the machines will talk to each other just fine. This is a completely platform agnostic device and I haven't found a browser yet on any platform that couldn't connect to it and go thru the configuration screens. The firmware upgrades tho typically require windows of some flavor to run. I suspect the complainers in these reviews are putting the blame on the wrong component in their internet setup, particularly the folks who claim to have returned them and had the same problems with the replacements. I'd put money on it that's the problem for the people that have gone thru 3 or more. All in all this is an unbelievably fantastic deal for a home network setup. For the price, I am completely blown away by the performance and flexibility of this router. The built in switched hub is awesome. Firmware upgrades only make it better, and with no software necessary to install on anything to configure it, this makes it a great choice for anyone no matter what they are running. I've read a lot of great things about the NetGear router too, but have no personal experience with them. It's been a long time and I don't remember why I chose the Linksys over the NetGear, but I've bought 3 of them and have no regrets. Never had any problems with any Linksys products - always great products at extremely reasonable prices, very affordable for the home.
