Summary: Amazon's poor customer service
Review: The Linksys router out of the box was faulty.
It took 2 days of constant calling to get Linksys
tech support, all to tell me the unit was no good.
I e-mailed Amazon for a replacement. It took them 3
days to reply. "We will send a mailer for it's return."
That was 16 days ago and I've seen nothing. ... Amazon should stick to books.
Customers should buy their hard goods locally.

Summary: Works great! (home user)
Review: This router/switch works great! I have a cable modem with the @home service, and decided that I wanted to hook up the Internet to multiple computers. This did the trick! I had two computers up and running with Internet access in practically no time. I added two additional computers and a five-port switch (I'm planning on adding more computers). So far, I am running two Windows 98 computers, a Red Hat Linux 7.1 computer, and a Windows NT 4 computer, all on this one router. This is a hassle-free way to network your cable modem! It has a nice instruction manual (along with a quickstart guide!), and the web-based setup is very easy to use. I gave it five stars because it fits my needs perfectly and it WORKS! Thank you for a great product, Linksys!

Summary: Lived up to it's rave reviews. Period.
Review: Had this unit up and on line in 10 minutes. Connected to my Toshiba cable modem and my NIC, connected to the router with IE, set a few entries and done. DHCP worked like magic with my work laptop. Just got to install some more CAT 5 runs and I will be finished with my home network project. Bottom line, me being a complete networking idiot was able to make this thing work. Hmmmmm?

Summary: Linksys BEFSR41 Router
Review: This is a great product - took all of 5 minutes to setup on RoadRunner and most of that time was re-arranging power from my UPS. It's interesting to watch the activity lights - the WAN ACT light flashes every few seconds - I wonder what's going on. Now it's nice to know it's not my PC being pinged regularly.

Summary: Works great, when it works at all...
Review: Connection: RoadRunner (cable modem), Austin, TX

The Linksys BEFSR41 switch/router combo is a nice device for sharing broadband among computers on your LAN. It does a pretty good job with allocating IPs using its built-in DHCP server, and the web interface for configuring the device is great. It has a lot of functionality, and I've found much utility in the port forwarding functions of the device as well. However:

A big irritation (and I mean BIG) is that the device loses WAN network connectivity after a certain time period.

I run my machines all day long, and I get speedy throughput from the device. Suddenly and mysteriously, the device will stop making connections to the outside after a number of hours. Each port or MAC address seems to act independently, as I have had one machine on the switch stop working while the others continue working, but I've also had all three of my machines on the switch eventually lose connectivity. The problem is usually resolved by rebooting, but rebooting my machines takes forever, and I don't like to terminate processes that I need to keep running. This is absolutely unacceptable for machines that must have constant net connectivity. That's two stars docked off for Linksys.

Tech support was a joke, too. I reported this problem to Linksys tech support, and they suggested that it was a port forwarding issue on my end. Indeed, it appears that Linksys tech support is illiterate and ignorant of what I told them; I have never seen such gross incompetence and re-interpretation of the problem clearly defined in the e-mail that I sent to them. Minus one star for Linksys.

Needless to say, I did my own investigating with another owner of the Linksys BEFSR41 router on RoadRunner in Austin. He has the same problem, but with the Linksys BEFSR11 router. He also mentioned that at his work, he has another Linksys router that also exhibits the same problem. This is looking all too familiar; what is Linksys going to do about it? Nothing. Minus yet another star for Linksys.

If you don't keep your machines running 24/7, maybe this router would be good for you. If you are a power or corporate user, I recommend that you stay away from this product and get something that's more stable. Bottom line: You get what you pay for.

Summary: Works Great When it Works
Review: I have purchased two (2) Linksys BEFSR41 routers and both failed (Firmware error according to technical support). While they worked, they were great, therefore I will try one more time. If this one fails, then I will look elsewhere.

Summary: Great Router for the Home User
Review: I was very skeptical about this router with the rave reviews it has received. Fortunately, the BEFSR41 lives up to its reputation.

Set up is very easy and intuitive. However, it took me a little longer because I like to tweak things, which generally takes longer to set up. Total, it took me about 15 minutes to access the web. Don't read the piece of "Getting Started" paper, instead read the manual. You'll be much better informed.

There is one feature lacking and that's stealthing UDP ports. The TCP ports are automatically stealthed unless you have port forwarding or DMZ enabled, but there isn't an option to stealth your UDP ports. I emailed Linksys about this issue, and hopefully, they'll include that feature in their next firmware upgrade. Another thing I don't like about my Linky is that it doesn't include a cat 5 cable.
All in all, this router is perfect for the home user. If you want a fast, powerful, and a real firewall router, this isn't the router you're looking for. Instead, take a look at WatchGuard's Firebox series, the SonicWALL series, or the Zywall 10.

I gave this router 1 stars because I'm realistic because Linksys could have included many more features, less bugs and better phone tech support.

Summary: Excellent product
Review: When I first decided to get a cable modem at my house, the first thing I was told was if I was going to use more than one computer, I could get a Cable/DSL router and have high-speed access for all of my computers without having to purchase additional routers. This product was recommended to me and it was extremely easy to set up and use. I've recommened this product to several other people and even helped show people how easy it is to install. It's built in firewall even passes the test from Gibson Research (grc.com). I now have three computers all networked together and connected to the internet thanks to this product. I highly recommend it.

Summary: A Great Product
Review: I pulled it out of the box, plugged it in, connected the cables to my computers and the cable modem, and then turned everything on. Once my computer booted up, I opened the instruction manual to start figuring out how to get the thing running; then, as I looked at the lights on the router and modem, I realized it might already be running. Sure enough, both PCs were already connected to the internet, and I didn't have to do a thing!

The only thing that I had to change in the setup was the password. By the way, the setup utility is easy and intuitive, and the instructions are pretty clear.

Now, I can have my two desktops and laptop on the internet at the same time and share files and printers among all three. For the price this is truly a great product.
