Summary: high pitch beep
Review: this is a great device. BUT if you consider to operate this device not in the basement or attic, think about to buy a quiet one. It spreads an annoying high pitch beep.

Summary: Full family access
Review: We're using this router to share one cable connection among our 4 PCs. My husband set it up with little trouble. When he called the tech support number to have some questions answered about making sure that we'd all have full access to the Internet, he got a quick, useful answer. Having everyone connected and noone waiting for their turn on the net has been great. We even play network games together as a family now, and that's a lot of fun.

Summary: Multiple PCs - ONE IP Address
Review: This is a great device that has the capability to track the users on your in home (or work) network which can really help PARENTS find out what sites (ie: Internet Content) their CHILDREN are viewing.

Considering that ISPs are about to start charging (Some already are) for more PCs connected to their network from your home, it would be in your best interest to purchase a router - you won't even need to discuss that you have multiple computers attached in your home. Not only will this help you save money in the long run, it will help keep your computer safe from the criminally minded types.

The BEFSR41 Etherfast 4-Port Cable/DSL Router was easily configurable - there is a 'quick-sheet' of instructions for those of us who refuse to use those pesky informative manuals.

Although the description mentions a firewall, I haven't seen any documentation about setting it up in my BEFSR41. But, I've already got a firewall installed on my system, apparently giving me 'dual-wall' protection, that tracks which programs are connecting to the internet - I caught 3 spyware products my ISP is using and disabled them (Of course, they didn't tell me they were there, listening...).

IMHO, Linksys makes quality components.

Summary: Linksys this router ...
Review: Hey,

this router is the biggest POs ever. not only did the router block out some of my webs sites but there tech support ppl can fix anything, the first guy i got told me to swap my eithernet card on the PCI slot say that their was a IRQ conflict, so i swapped the card in the PCi slots. THAT FIXED NOTHING!!!, then i called again the other guy told me to upgrade my firmware, THAT CAUSED EVEN MORE PORBLEM!!!, now i can't get on any of the www .com sites my modem works when i unhook the router. i'm gonna call there tech support again 2 day for the last time then i'm throwing this POS router in teh garbage....

Summary: Great product
Review: Just a few little hints for people trying a home network with this router. I tried to set it up a network the first few times using all of the troubleshooting guides in the manual and on the cd. For some reason nothing was working. I forgot I needed to put the 'computer name' in the "host name" section of the router hookup. The only problem I came across while using the router is the firewall it has set up. There are ways to disable it but the manual and control panel are confusing for new users to networking. Other than that, it has saved me a lot of money for not paying for a second phone line for a computer on the second floor, and not paying the ISP for their monthly service.

Summary: I now have 3 of these......
Review: and can report having had absolutely zero problems in sharing (2) DSL and (1) Cable connections and in running small networks. As I evolve slowly to a new operating system (Windows XP), it was nice to learn that the router allows machines running different OSs to communicate flawlessly.

Summary: Great for Home Networking with XP
Review: I have XP on my main machine, which will do the same thing as this Linksys Router, however the router does a better job at handling packets and protecting your home network. I had it up and running in 15 minutes and already updated the firmware in a matter of minutes... I love this router and recommend it to everyone who asks for a home network with 1 shared internet connection.

Summary: Good price but ...
Review: Spec wise this router does everything one needs it to do. However, actually getting it to work is another story. After spending several hours trying different configurations and an hour on the phone with tech support, I was told I had a bad router and should take it back to the store and get another one. I did just that and after an hour of trying to get this new one working I gave up. Other reviewers seemed to have had good luck getting this particular router up and running, however, I won't be buying another Linksys product anytime soon. The amount of time I spent trying to configure defective products far outweighed the cost of the product. I ended up getting a Netgeat RP114 router and within 15 minutes of opening the box, I had the router working with my cable modem and 3 pcs.

Summary: easy to set up, nice to look at
Review: About 5 minutes after I opened the box containing my Linksys Ethernet Router, I had it connected and set up without reading any instructions... the unit is clearly marked and you've really got to go out of your way to screw up.

The instructions tell you what IP address to log into via your browser to get a snazzy looking login screen and administration pages. Linksys is known for its reliability and ease of use and I got recommendations from other users of this product.

My less than perfect rating for this item is their total lack of acknowledgement of the Mac platform... it is to their own detriment. I have this set up with my Mac G4/400 (AGP), but mostly due to the ease of use of the Mac platform.

This router comes with documentation for every flavor of Windows except 3.1, but does not give any instructions for Mac OS... not one word. It's hard to believe a manufacturer would have a potential audience of about 20 million Mac owners and not exploit the fact that their product works seamlessly w/ the Mac platform.

Even their website remains silent on the Mac OS, which did leave me having some guesswork and figuring out stuff on my own as well as consulting MacFixit forums, etc. The enclosed CD has additional instructions, but you guessed it... nothing regarding the Mac. For shame.

The LEDs are pretty straight forward and it's easy to see at a glance which port is having activity. The unit is designed so that additional routers can stack and fit in an inter-locking fashion so that the legs of the unit above fit in indentations of the case below. The legs have rubberized feet pads to prevent scratching of nice desks.

If you have broadband connectivity, you owe it to yourself to get a router such as this one to protect you from hackers. The Linksys Etherfast Router is known for having a dependable hardware firewall. Even if you're a Mac user, you can't do better for the price than this unit... you just may need to do some searches on the Internet for instructions by other Mac users to ease your comfort level.
