Rating: Summary: Good product, manual could be better Review: This is a solid product for a great price. You don't need the accompanying CD-ROM to set it up. In my case, I hooked it up to a Toshiba cable modem and followed the quick start guide to configure the settings. It didn't work right away. A quick call to my cable modem provider revealed that I needed to turn the cable modem off and back on so it can "tolerate" the router. So when you set this up for the first time, be sure to restart both the router and the cable modem after you configure it.
Rating: Summary: great router, easy setup Review: Relatively simple to install, reliable, easy to use, cheap - great product. I am currently using this router to connect a win2000 pc, a linux machine, and two laptops from a wireles ap to bellsouth dsl - with all I just plugged them in and told them to automatically detect settings - ready to go. also simple to create home network. Highly recommend this router
Rating: Summary: Cable Router Review: I recently purchased this item. I plugged it in and followed the insructions and had it running my network in under a half hour.
Rating: Summary: It won't work Review: I just purchased this thing, but we can not get it to work. I called support sevices and worked with them, but for some reason or other they can not get it to connect up either. It will not recognize as being connected to the internet. They had me changing so many things in my computer system, it got to be ridiculous. After the third "tech" helping me, my computer would not even connect to the internet at all. I had to do a "system restore" from a week earlier. I wish Linksys would hire personnel who speak English. I have a very hard time understanding the accent of the workers. Each one I spoke with was from another country. I will give this thing to Goodwill so they can use it as a paperweight. And it is only one week old.
Rating: Summary: Pretty gosh darn happy with it Review: I was able to set up this router *very* easily, virtually automatically and instantaneously, and have since been able to use multiple computers via my single broadband IP address at once without my usual deal of unplugging cables, releasing and renewing IP addresses, etc. The built-in Network Address Translation (NAT) firewall is great--though I previously received repeated warnings via Norton Internet Security about port scans, etc., I don't recall having a single one since this was installed. Given the relatively low price, the lessened hassle for connecting multiple computers is wonderful, though I primarily purchased the BEFSR41 for the increased firewall security, which has been enough of a benefit in and of itself to more than justify the investment. On the potential downside, I've simply heard elsewhere of people being moderately confused if they desire to adjust security settings for internet gaming, video conferencing, etc. (though I know this is possible). Admittedly, I also haven't experimented yet with transfers between computers and whether or not using the Linksys for such is much of a hassle. One of the most worthwhile investments I can recall having made in recent years, I give the BEFSR41 from Linksys a full and thorough recommendation. Only potential lingering doubts have to do with whether or not I should have purchased a model with wireless capability for potential future expansion, but I don't think I could be happier for my current ongoing needs/wants. Outstanding product, and Amazon had the best price(s) I could find. If you don't mind internet searching for how to handle more advanced uses you might have (like the gaming and file transfers between computers), I think you'll find this one of the best tech investments you can come across. Kudos to Amazon, too, for such a great price and immediate shipping.
Rating: Summary: Great SOHO router Review: I have had this unit since summer 2001 and it works great. Setup was easy, supports PPPoE for DSL connections, and provides DHCP for easy TCP/IP configuration/maintenance on the home network. The only problem I had was trying to set it up right after I got it--I couldn't get the administration/configuration page to come up by pointing my browser to the IP @ assigned to the router admin port. I downloaded an updated BIOS and flashed the unit, and no problems since then. I would imagine this has been fixed in recently shipped units. I switched from DSL to cable recently, and got the Linksys cable modem (BEFCMU10). It stacks easily above/below the router, and set up easily, and works flawlessly. A solid combination, and a great alternative to modem rental.
Rating: Summary: almost perfect Review: Setup was a breeze. Less than 30min out of the box and I had three computers sharing my cable modem. The manual goes over the basics for a beginner, but if you are planning on setting something a little more complicated you'll have to look up some info online. There are problems running certain types of game servers, you gotta check game manufacturers website or check in some game forums. There is also a known issue with Quake 3 where you may lose your connection to the router and have to reboot. Flashing to an older firmware is the suggested fix, until Linksys figures it out. Other than those minor issues, I would definitely recommend this product.
Rating: Summary: I'd avoid Linksys for all your needs... Review: Let's see. This router worked fine with my Road Runner connection in NYC. Moved to Florida, set it up, and it drops every hour or so. Also, the four port switch is useless as if I plug more than three connections in, the router locks up. Also, I have purchased their wireless access point and associated card for my laptop, and while the access point works fine, the card is junk. It just would not work. I called tech support, and waited on hold for about an hour. The rep who finally answered put me on hold and hung up! Called back and waited for another 1 1/2 hours before giving up and I hung up. I went out and bought a Lucent Orinoco wireless card (which was about 3x as expensive) and it works great. Bought a Linksys wireless card for my dad's PC and it didn't work EITHER. Went out and bought a Netgear model, and it worked with no problems. I am on my way now to go get a new Router, and will NEVER buy Linksys again! Oh, and I've heard that if you have a Toshiba cable modem with Road Runner service, this router won't work (my scenario) as per Linksys tech support. STAY AWAY!
Rating: Summary: Its Ok Review: I bought this router about a year ago. The ease of installation was very difficult as I wasn't very educated when i purchased it. But once I got everything working OK, it stoped working about a month later. I have always had problems with the router but it usually works good(the problems are on the PC's end). The only thing I do not like about the router is that the DMZ hosting appears not to work, which I kinda need becuase i host alot of video games(I use port forwarding instead). The HTML configurer is also a nice feature. I would definetly recomend this router to anyone who knows what they are doing, otherwise, don't even bother.
Rating: Summary: Router O' Piece of Crap Review: This router worked for one day on a pc with Windows 2000. Tried to hook up a pc and a mac (OS X) to it.Rumor has that it can be done, but Linksys doesn't support their products hooked up to a mac, so don't expect any advice. If you want to do this do not buy this, get an Asante router. We had nothing but problems and in the end I couldn't hook it back up to my computer(pc)and get on line. Stay away from this router!
