Summary: WGT624 Works great... but don't Flash it unless you have to!
Review: I got my WGT624 about a month ago and when I first got it, it prompted me to look for new firmware... and like an idiot, I went ahead and clicked yes and downloaded the newest firmware... BIG MISTAKE!!!

The unit never had a chance... the firmware hosed it like nobody's busines.

But never fear... I called Netgear and talked to tech support (...), however eventually they came to the conclusion that the unit was hosed and that it would have to be replaced under warranty (since it was brand spankin' new). You can get more details on my encounter with their "tech support" here: http://chimptopia.com/pimptopia/031304.shtml

When the new unit arrived... I didn't flash it this time and it worked flawlessly. I'm very happy with its performance and having fast video streaming from one PC to another in my network is great.

It gets 4 stars just because when you first boot it up, it asks you to look for new firmware which caused my problem below. Honestly, they should change that... cause that is just ASKING for problems.

Summary: Horrid, Heinous, Happy to return
Review: This product is such a piece of junk I feel compelled to write a review. It took hours to set up (and I've been a professional computer programmer for 6 years). Tech support has you try the same things - over and over and over again. After a while I said "screw it" and got it working myself. Then it stops working one day. No reason, no changes. Do you really want to put yourself through this?

Is there anything lower than 1 star?

Summary: Great features but plauged with a serious problem
Review: This unit has some wonderful features for the price, but it is no stable when the wireless mode is enabled. Ever 2 to 4 hours, the unit goes through this rebooting process that cannot be stopped. There is no issue listed on the Netgear website, and Netgear has yet to respond to my inquiry, but do a Google search for "WGT624 unit reboots" and you will see what I mean.

It is best to avoid this product and choose something else. Is is suspected that the "Atheros" chip is to blame, whatever that means! I guess find a wireless router that does not use an "Atheros" chip.

Summary: Stable and Reliable
Review: I have owned the WGT624 since November 2003 (version 1), and have never had a problem with it that I can recall. I don't know what a lot of these other reviewers are doing to theirs, but mine works flawlessly. I have recently updated the firmware to the latest version (4?) without even a hiccup. SPI is enabled and the WGT624 doesn't lose any speed with my 3.0 Mbit Comcast ISP (thru a Motorola SB5100 cable modem). All wireless devices I own work without a problem, and the WGT624 has never, ever, spontaneously rebooted on me! This router is secure, port forwarding works like a charm, and it takes little to no expertise to configure the WGT624 to do what you need it to do. Granted, calling tech support is useless, but a simple search on the web with your problem will point you in the right direction. If you need to connect multiple devices to your broadband ISP, require secure wireless connections, and like the benefits of the built-in firewall, then you can't go wrong with the WGT624. Highly recommended.

Summary: Bad Router
Review: I bought this based on the technical specs. Big mistake. From the minute I installed it I've had problems w/ random reboots. I've spoken to Netgear tech support 5 times - finally, they just told me to send it back. As others have said - that is a lame excuse. Google this product and you'll see - the reboot problem is a very pervasive problem among many purchasers. Luckily Amazon has great cust. svc and return policy. But they are shouldering Netgear's problem.

Summary: Wonderful~
Review: I got this router after trying D-Link b and g routers to work. I have T1 connection through evolution broadband in new york city. They provide a static ip address. My aim was to set up a home wireless network and share the internet connection with one desktop and one notebook. I've using wireless b network at my previous home with SMC router and Verizon dsl with no problem.

I read from reviews that D-Link did not work with T1 but I chose to ignore it since D-Links were so cheap compare to others. So I orders b router and it didn't work. I returned it and orders g router. Still no luck. Only way to access the internet was to set it as a switch (using the Lan ports instead of internet port). But in this case, since I have a static IP address, when TCP/IP is set at the static ip, the router was inaccessible. When TCP/IP was set at auto, the router is accessible but not the internet. The problem went on and on. And there was no respond from D-Link. So I returned g router as well. I might have missed something or didn't configure it correctly but still, the fact that I was struggling told me that D-Link was sub-par.

After this, I was struggling between Linksys and Netgear. But since the price of Linksys was about twice of Netgear, I decided to try Netgear and got WGT624 super G. I said to myself... it's only 20 more expensive than g so let's go with it even though I do not have super g in my wireless notebook (Inspiron 8600). Only thing was that I heard there were two versions of WGT624. I did not want to get the order version.

When I received it, I was happy to find out that the router from Amazon was version 3 (???). I am serious. The sticker says WGT624v3.

Now it was time to set it up. I read another review for WGT614 here at Amazon that said... when you have T1, you have to connect the internet to LAN and use the router as a switch. So I did that... configured everything. Working ok but the problem was I couldn't share the internet. There was all this tinkering... yet I couldn't figure it out. So I emailed the tech. Two days later, I received an email saying "do not use it as a switch" from India. "What does this mean?" I did not realize at the time that it meant that I should't have connected the internet to the LAN. After replying and receiving an answer from the same person (at least the same person handled the query), I took the T1 internet connection and put it in the internet port of the router, set the TCP/IP at auto and the router's IP setting to the static ip setting.

Wow! Like magic, everything started to work! No problem with the network, no problem with sharing. It was working as it was supposed to do and I saved at least 50 bucks over Linksys!

Apparently, Netgear was able to handle not only DSL, Cable but also T1 with static IP address.

So if you are looking for a router for T1 connection at home or in your office, don't waste your money! Get Netgear! Now I just need to get that super G card for my notebook...

Summary: self rebooting without a reason
Review: Good
I just ordered it from Amazon this week and I received it in 3 days with free shipping. Thanks Amazon.

Bad
It has self rebooting problem from day one (model WGT624 v2 with newest firmware). Technical support suggested me to reset the router and when that did not work out, they suggested me to return it and try some other models. Is this their best shot to support its customers? Netgear should not ship this product out. They should have a recall and a fix for all its customers.

Summary: Cheap and useless
Review: I ordered this item thinking it would be as easy to setup as my Netgear B router. Not only would it not sync with my cable modem but the router itself looks like a cheap knockoff. I have a custom antenna for my B and was looking forward to the added speed but it seems Netgear has cut corners and added a non replaceable antenna. Avoid this item.

Review: hdspringer98,

Where did you bought WGT624? I read the same stuff about V2 on some other sites too. Could you re-post, if you got V2 from Amazon?

Thx

Summary: Simple product to install and use-even for me!
Review: I bought this expecting some difficulty setting it up based on some reviews on CNET. A key thing I knew going in was that you definately want the v2 version. You can tell it's the v2 because it'll have a yahoo sticker on the box along with a green starburst claiming extended range. The unit will have a v2 next to the model number on the bottom. This took me no more than 15 minutes to set up the router and 2 wireless notebook adapters. I have comcast cable for internet. Everything worked perfectly 1st try on my windows 2000 notebook. Some minor tweaking on my Window98 machine for work and it all works fine. Even my corporate VPN works and XBOX live no problems. Definately recommended.
