Review: At first I was skeptical about purchasing this wireless router because of a lot of people's problems with it. I got it this afternoon, plugged it in and I can see the signal (since I left SSID Broadcast on at first). My problem was I could not authenticate. Took me a few times to get the right WEP settings to work on my new powerbook ... yes! a MAC! This is the only reason I bought a wireless router, so that I can use the wireless airport in my powerbook. I was able to use ALL the security features of this router and it's signal strength is great! I was surfing on our driveway! GREAT PRICE! GREAT PRODUCT! I know I was right in purchasing another netgear product. The $29.99+tax that I paid for this product was worth it! Way to go netgear!

Summary: Works fine w/Mac and setup was quick
Review: Not to negate other reviewers' negative comments, but I have had no problems w/the Netgear 802.11g router. I was wary about buying it, given so many negative comments, but figured I'd give it a try, as it was so inexpensive. I actually returned the Airport base station when I realized it only had one Ethernet port and was twice the size and twice as expensive as the competition.I use a Mac G4 and an iBook G4. Disconnected my old D-link router, connected the Netgear, and had it configured in 5 minutes. I found the instructions accessed via the web browser to be clear, and quickly set up a password to prevent unauthorized access of the wireless link. I'm not giving the unit 5 stars, as the range seems just adequate; fine when I'm on the same floor as the router, but when I go downstairs it drops, and pages come in slower. Still, it works, and it hasn't gone down in 3 weeks.

Summary: Works very well!
Review: I bought this unit last December of 2003 and installed it during the new year holidays. Initial installation issues came about...partly because I have no clue how wireless networks work. After fiddling with the unit for a couple of weeks, I was able to get a stable connection...and have not had any problems ever since. I think most people have problems because of some settings issue. Once people get past that, it works pretty well. This just means that documentation could have been done better. Only thing missing here is WPA....installed the beta version from the netgear website and didn;t work. So I just went back to WEP... Overall, a good product.

Summary: Works fine, even with my macs
Review: I have bought two of these, and for the price they are fine. I am connected to my Macs with airport cards and ethernet - so I don't know about the usb complaint. The software interface is not as nice as an airport, and you should know something about setting up wireless connections or be patient - it is never "effortless". None the less, it does the job and gives one adequate options. Once Wireless flies, it rocks.

Summary: NOT COMPATIBLE WITH MAC
Review: 3 days of solid all day long tech support leads me to believe this "mac compatible" product is in fact not anywhere close to mac compatible. Got it up and running the first day - but when I attempted to connect a wireless usb adapter from another mac - crash city - the router went down. Same thing after about 37 tries. Tried every setting known to man, every form of resetting/power cycling/firmware updating - nothing. Maybe this gear will work with another manufacturer, but it will not work with netgear USb adapters or Macwireless USB adapter - which by the way are the only options for those unwilling to spend $3,000,000,000 for the airport cards (thanks a lot apple for pricing wireless products that other sell for 30 bucks at 300 bucks and up). I am fed up with companies that pretend to support platforms but can't get their gear to work even after 2 days (linksys) and 3 day (netgear) of all-day long tech support. I am sure these babies are just "plug and play" for the PC users out there, bu they are a nightmare for us mac users. I will not buy another netgear product - mainly because they outsource their tech support to illiterate morons. There are plenty of illiterate morons here in the US that can at least speak english when we need tech support. Someone please make a mac compatible wireless solution!!!! The lack of mac support out there for alleged "mac compatible" products is about to drive this 30-year supporter of mac - away for good.

Summary: Unreliable wireless connection
Review: I bought this router because of its ridiculously low price (...) And I too have heard good things about the Netgear brand. The device only took 2 minutes to set up with RCN's cable modem (dynamic ip), and the web config interface is simple. But the wireless connection dies intermittently, sometimes as often as several times a day! I have to go over to the router, unplug it, and plug it back in to reset it. Afterwards it works fine. If you're at home, it's a minor nuisance, but if you're running a server or need to connect to your network when nobody's home to reset the router, DON'T BUY THIS.

Summary: Reliable, stable and easy to set up
Review: I upgraded to this wireless router from a non-wireless model from Linksys. I was apprehensive about the reliability of a wireless network, but figured I would get some use out of it. Much to my delight, this router has provided more stability than the Linksys did. I play on-line internet games a lot, and I experienced random "link-deaths" with the Linksys. However, the problem has disappeared with the addition of this router. I am able to log-on to games like Everquest over a wireless connection, and stay connected for hours without any lag or server disconnections. Range is great. I have the router in my basement on the far west wide of the house, and Im still able to get a strong signal upstairs on the east side of the property. That is a distance of 80 feet, through a floor and 3 walls. Set up was very easy on Windows XP. Everything just plugged in and started working. My wireless laptop quickly found and hooked into the Netgear wireless network.

Summary: easy set up
Review: From my experience, the netgear routers are much easier to set up than the linksys routers. Plus setting up MAC authentication is extremely easy in the web based interface. I use this router at school, and I bring it home with me for the breaks even though we have a linksys wireless router at home. The amount of time it takes to plug this one into the internet is so much less than it would take to add me to the linksys router that it's worth toting it around. It's sleek looking, and it has a good setup interface. I love mine!

Summary: Cannot do VPN
Review: This product is easy on the eyes and the setup is effortless. However, we just couldn't get VPN to work with it. After spending several hours trying to make VPN work, we finally gave up and got a Linksys WRT54G. The Linksys is more expensive but it works. If you don't need VPN, get Netgear. If you need VPN, get something else.
