Summary: Not sure why others had problems with setup
Review: I bought this router as a replacement for my 802.11b access point (Linksys WAP11), as the first step in upgrading my home network to 54Mbps. I saw the reviews about setup problems, but the price was good, and I'm pretty tech-savy, I figured I could handle it. Also, I have used the Netgear 802.11b model and found it easy to setup, so hoped this model would be the same.

I really am not sure why others had problems. First of all, the ONLY thing I read in the instruction booklet was the default IP address of the router, so I could access the administration interface. After that, I unplugged the cables from the Linksys (and my mini-hub) and plugged them into this Netgear, along with the power cord. My one hardwired computer attached to it instantly. I used that PC to log into the router, and found the UI to be farily intutitive. I entered in my PPPoE username & password for my DSL, and set the SSID and WEP code identically to the linksys setup. The router logged into my DSL service immedaitely and my 2 wireless connected PCs(both 802.11b)found the network and started working just fine as well, all able to see each other as well as the internet.

I think that if you are not familiar at all with home networking or wireless networking, or don't understand what I've said above, you should expect the standard challenges of trying something new. Short of that though, I don't see why anyone would have a mojor problem with this router. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is I just started using it, and therefore am witholding judgement. But, Setup alone gets 5 stars.

Summary: Easy setup, excellent performance
Review: The setup was intuitive and quick. There are only a few settings that need to change after taking it out of the box. The performance is good, I watched packets with a sniffer and saw few re-transmits, and they were immediately successful.

Compared to the D-Link 514 that I've got, the Netgear is easier to set up, and it works properly.

Summary: Very cool
Review: I can't comment on how Netgear compares to Linksys or D-link or any of the others, but I will say that once you go wireless, you'll never go back.

Even if you're thinking about setting up a wired ethernet system, get the wireless capability. It doesn't really cost any more (except you have to get wireless cards for any destination laptop or desktop as well) and eventually you will use it. I have the router downstairs in my home tucked away in a corner closet and I continually get a "good" to "very good" signal upstairs in my kitchen. I do actually have a desktop hooked up to an ethernet system adjacent to the router and it is really no faster. My fiancee also uses her laptop anywhere in the house.

It did take a bit of time to get the system up and working and the documentation is a bit thin, but once you register the product, you can call an 800 number which will connect you to somebody in India (at least, that's what happened to me) who will walk you through it. My guy was very knowledgeable and patient and you could have sworn he was located in some Silicon Valley call center.

Summary: Easy installation
Review: I was installing the router to both a desktop G4 and an iBook. Using the installation wizard, I had the notebook up and running in minutes. I'm impressed by the range.

I wish the Mac instructions had been a little more thorough, hence 4 stars instead of 5. For any other Mac users: scrap your locations under "networking" and start from scratch, don't edit an old one.

At first I couldn't get my desk computer onto the internet, because I was still trying to go online through PPoE. But, then I went through the same process as I used for the laptop, in other words logging into the router through my browser, and all was fine. So far, I'm really pleased.

Summary: Out of the box Experience
Review: I got this yesterday, and was online within 15 minutes. I followed the detailed instructions and all went along well. There also is a separate sheet with an extensive list of ISP's and there configuration settings. I haven't used the wireless bit yet, just using it as a wired router and I will tell you, it's money well spent...

Summary: Stunningly simple, Amazing range
Review: I know some have had problems with this item, but not me. I plugged it in and pressed the configure button and was done. My laptop picked it up right away. I tested it in the basement and in a room at the farthest corner away from the router. I even tried it outside at the end of my driveway and it still picked it up.

I suspect that many problems folks have may be related to interference with other electronics.

I have NEVER had a piece of hardware (especially networking) be so simple. Literally, plug it in and forget about it.

Awesome, very highly recommended.

Summary: Excellent Wireless Product
Review: I purchased the router despite some of the negative reviews that people left; it was an excellent price, and the $20 rebate was excellent as well. I connected the router to a PC running Windows ME (those with experience in this OS know how much of a horror it can be) without a problem. The cable modem (access provided by Optimum Online) was connected to the router, and the router was connected to the PC using the provided ethernet cable. Following the directions produced a working signal in no time at all. I am connecting to the router using a G3 iBook with an 802.11b Airport card; the computer picked up the signal immediately and without any need to configure network settings (nor did I have to install anything on the PC). I'm using MAC filtering (which was simple to set up) for security, but it has a few other features. Overall, a fine product which I would definetly recommend for apple users looking for a cheap alternative to the over-priced Airport Base Station.

Summary: IF YOU'RE NOT A TECH, FORGET IT: IT'S A RIPOFF
Review: Anyone who is not a computer tech should avoid the WGR614. I purchased one in conjuction with buying a new, big-name notebook with wireless card. I also have a big-name cable connection. I'm a computer user, not a tech. Nor am I ignorant, just not a tech. I was never able to get the WGR614 wireless working without technical support, and never able to get it working with WEP or other security. Netgear's answer: don't use WEP. Oh, and be careful . . . tech support is only free until they get the thing working with you for the first time. After that, big per-minute fees for a dude in Bangalore who can barely speak English. And it DID NOT continue working trouble free. The documentation is no help. AVOID THIS ROUTER AS IF IT CARRIES THE PLAGUE.

Summary: Hassle free setup and great features for the price
Review: I bought this router for the security features (SPI, NAT etc.) and to use with a Netgear MA111 wireless USB adapter with my TiVo so I would not need to update via a phoneline. The hardware itself is very slim and sleek, very easy to hide say under your modem. Regarding the setup I was done within 15 minutes after I opened the box and looked at the basic setup guide. This router and the Netgear MA111 wireless adapter works flawlessly with my Toshiba SDH400 TiVo unit after completing guided setup with a WIRED USB adapter, getting about 75% - 90% signal strength. My only gripe with this particular router is it dosent have a log for incoming and outgoing internet traffic, for some odd reason it only logs websites you visit. Ive read that only the Pro products from Netgear feature logging capability and not the home versions. Instead I use a software firewall to do the logging. Even without the logging capability I think this is a very nice router that is easy to setup for someone new to networking.
