Summary: easy setup, great range, no interference so far
Review: there were four things i considered as "very important" when i went looking for a wireless router:
- connection options
- ease of setup
- connection speed
- wireless range and interference

the wgr614 has (so far) performed very well on all counts. first, connection options. this router allows up to four ethernet connections so i've got my main desktop PC hardwired, as well as my work notebook whenever i have to work from home (my company does not allow wireless connections). another personal notebook PC and my wife's work notebook are connected using Netgear WG511 Wireless 802.11g 54Mbps PC Cards.

second consideration was ease of setup. i consider myself comfortable with technology, but this setup was REALLY easy using the Install Assistant, a simple, browser-based wizard. this router was out of the box and running in 15 minutes.

third, connection speed. i have no objective way of measuring this but so far, i have been very satisfied with the wireless speed connection. a caveat: i have read from other websites that in mixed-mode (when both 802.11g and 802.11b devices are running), transfer speed suffers but since i only connect using 802.11g, this has not been an issue.

fourth consideration was connection range. i have this router setup in the basement and so far, i have not had any wireless connection issues when using our notebook in the front or back porch or in the second floor. there's always the potential of interference from other devices but i am happy to report that i have yet to see evidence of such interference.

a final bonus consideration: this router has a slim design the size of a thin paperback with a rounded, silver exterior. this can be laid flat but it can also stand on edge using a little plastic stand.

all in all, a very nice package that i am comfortable recommending to anyone looking to setup a wireless home network.

i hope this helps your buying decision. peace.

Summary: Very simple setup
Review: When I received this router, I was apprehensive about the time it would take to set it up. But to my surprise, I had connected my desktop and my wfe's laptop (wirelessly) in about 20 minutes. In addition, I could set up the security features in about an hour. Couldn't have been better...

Summary: Simple set up
Review: I just received this product today and I had it set up from from box to operational in less than 15 minutes. The reason it took that long is because I forgot to turn on my notebooks built in 802.11g wireless antenna. Once I turned it on, my computer detected the signal and the rest was history. I'm getting an excellent signal, no drop out's yet. I have not tested the range yet but so far it covers the whole house and the surrounding areas. This thing is fast much better than I expected. Comes with a firewall and some other software. I highly recommend this device.

Summary: Great Router
Review: This is my first router. I was up and running in a very short time. The administration page is very easy to use and access. This product has exceeded my expectations. (Still have not tried the wireless features.)

Summary: Rock solid
Review: This is one great router, easy step by step instructions on the cd. This router is fast and hangs on to the connection without any hickups.One of the best looking routers on the market with a great price from Amazon. I was a little on easy about networking with all the negative reviews from other users, but this router is really a no brainer.

Summary: Don't upgrade the firmware!!!!
Review: I've had the WGR614 since it came out. It has proven to be an ok router, especially when I compare it to the issues I had with the comparable Linksys and D-Link products that I had before. However, after upgrading to the latest firmware, to comply with the 802.11g standard, the router crapped out.

We use three wireless components at the house, and none of them could hold a signal once I installed the new firmware. It was so bad, I thought it was something that had to do with my wireless cards.

Not so. I didn't even bother calling the inept service department. I just downgraded the firmware and was able to get the router back to the performance it had before.

I just ordered the business model (uglier, but hopefully a better product). I will report on that one once it is installed.

Summary: GREAT ROUTER - watch out for the REBATE though!
Review: The router has been excellent. 10 minutes to set up and secure.

What I do complain about is the company that NETGEAR have selected to run the rebate program (TCA REBATES ~ www.tcarebates.com). I bought both a router and a Netgear WG511 Wireless 802.11g 54Mbps PC Card. They advertise a $20 rebate with this router and a $10 rebate with the card. I sent in the correct forms, receipt and both UPC Labels (all in one envelope).
TCA sent me an email to say they were disallowing the $20 rebate because they did not receive the UPC Label for the router (though they apparently did find the Wireless card UPC). This is complete nonsense since I have photocopies of all the materials I submitted.
Anyway, don't count on the rebate reducing the price - otherwise a fine buy!

Summary: Go Wireless
Review: A good product. Does what it says. Signal strength great throught house and back yard. Speeds within LAN at 54mps. Setup a snap with good security features. Spoke to alot of people who tried other products like Linksys and had bad things to say about them. Amazon had it at the house in 3 days.

Summary: Crashes everyday
Review: I bought a WGR614 at the beginning of November. Everyday I have to reboot the device by cycling its power. The symptoms are:
No routing;
No wireless, or slow wireless;
No response to ICMP pings;
No response to web configuration;
Status lights do not indicate a problem;
No DHCP server.

These symptoms sometimes appear in different combinations. I switched the DHCP service to a conventional server so that I would not lose TCP/IP services on Ethernet.

I have called NetGear's India support line four times. Everytime I call they suggest the same troubleshooting steps (push the reset button). They apparently do not have the capability of tracking customer issues--they just read from a script. I am attempting to get an advance exchange for a replacement unit. If NetGear will not exchange the unit, I will try the distributor.

While reading these reviews, I notice that the negative reviews are frequently rated less than helpful, while the positive reviews are generally rated helpful. Hmm.

Summary: Bad wireless router that replaced worse wireless router
Review: This replaced a Netgear BEFW11S4 router, which was hideously inept at keeping its wireless signal up or doing port-forwarding. After buying the Netgear, which I thought was a better brand, I'm not sure I'm much better off.

As I work, I can see the wireless signal drop from full strength to nothing for a few seconds, then come back. At other times, I've turned on a computer to find the signal gone and unwilling to come back - this can be fixed by plugging into an ethernet port, visiting the configuration page and simply "OK"ing the wireless settings, without changing anything. Of course, if ethernet were convenient to me, I wouldn't need the wireless. As it is, a device that fails every few days and needs to be reset is wholly unacceptable. It is better than the Linksys only because resetting the Linksys didn't always work, and on the Netgear, resetting does always work.

Nevertheless, home users shouldn't have to baby their network devices, particularly if you need wireless because your computer is physically nowhere near your DSL terminal or cable modem. This class of devices cannot fail, and even with the latest firmware this one does, a lot. One star.
