Summary: Noisy fan; poor RMA service
Review: We purchased a Linksys EG008W at the beginning of 2004; the fan was very noisy from the beginning, but workeded ok out of a remote basement closet. However, after six months, the fan failed altogether. Linksys RMA has been a disappointment--they claim they are "backordered" on replacement product. Sheesh.
Although the product seemed to work as advertised, given the noisy fan and Linksys' impossibly slow RMA and poor warranty service, cannot recommend purchasing this product. AVOID

Review: I got this installed last week and it works great. The only problem I have is that it runs pretty hot and its fan is loud. It is installed in the panel in the coat closet. With the panel door locked and coat closet closed, I can still hear the switch humming from the outside. Otherwise it works great!

Summary: Noisy and dangerous!
Review: I have been looking for a low-priced gigabit switch for some time and when I found out about this little Linksys baby I thought, "Victory is mine!" My dream of a massive home surveillance system transmitting hundreds of megabytes of video streams of my wife and kids to my control room would at last come true.As soon as I plugged it in the noise of the fan was deafening. I literally have to shout to be heard over it. To make matters worse, it runs ultra hot. When my daughter touched it at my direction she received first degree burns on her fingers. Now I know why it has such a loud fan. In addition, I didn't notice any speed increase with file transfers, although I tried everything, even holding it upside down while a copy was in progress (this technique works great with my DLink 10/100 switch, believe it or not). I feel ripped off and am currently dealing with Linksys to get a refund or some free products out of them. We'll see how that goes.

Review: In a nutshell: 2 units - 2 broken fans within a month - and these things can cook eggs while the fan is running. I want to replace the fan with something better than the crap they have, but they force me to RMA it since it's snapped together... not screwed. Which sucks because I wouldn't mind replacing this cheap crap-fan with something quieter & better quality.

Review: What every one has sed about it being a bad switch is all BS. i just got mine today and iv put it to hard work and push it to its limits and its ran perfectly. "When my daughter touched it at my direction she received first degree burns on her fingers" that is such a big lie, 1. if it got that hot the plastic case would have melted 2. it would not have past the UL test "warning, this is loud" its not that loud at all, heck my laptop is louder than this switch. the speed is amazing, i copy a 1.7gb file from one computer to the other in 40sec vs 10min on a 100mbps network as long as u have gigabit NICs

Summary: Replacement fan?
Review: Yes, I can agree to people already mentioning THE NOISE this device produces. It was so unusual to hear such a loud sound from LinkSys product. I have several different LinkSys devices and all are quiet. This one is not. Beware! It is louder than most computers are nowadays. LinkSys - oh no, CISCO as now owner of LinkSys should be ashamed. EG008W is intended for HOME use, isn't it? Not for noisy server room but for our sweet home? Tell us how to get it less noisy. Much less! This current noise level is unacceptable (it sounds loudly as I am writing this commentary). If anybody has found good replacement fan and/or knows procedure how to replace the noisy fan please write your advice here!
