Summary: Happy with Linksys
Review: This hub has been the core of my home network for over a year. Solid performer, works with all sorts of mongrelized 10 base T wiring. Uplink "shares" fifth port, only moderately successful in attaching 5 devices and an uplink.

Very small and light, if you are thinking of taking a hub on the road with your laptop.

Summary: Decent Reliability Proves Cost Effective
Review: This is a pretty cheap hub. In terms of price that is. For the cost is delivers a nice bang. I don't really push it much, but my hub is connected to a 10base-T LAN for my campus ethernet and I've got three computers hooked up to it. It usually handles multiple connections well, but there's just a few times when the poor hub just can't take it and the collision light blinks mad crazy. Performance is decent for my setup however, but my setup is probably atypical. However, if it can manage to deliver 1 meg/s total very nicely to one computer, and about the same total when three computers on the hub are asking for data, on this really nice campus ethernet connection, it should have little trouble handling slower DSL and cable modem connections. Oh, and over the summer, the thing was relegated to distributing a 56k modem connection. As if anyone was wondering... it handled that without a problem. Setup is a cinch, but that goes for most hubs. Plug and play in the truest sense of the word... if you have DHCP set up properly, Windows shouldn't even realize there's a hub there. Linksys products in general are very reliable however, so I expect this hub to last me for well past the amount of time I'll need it to.

Summary: Great Performance for 10MB/sec Hub
Review: This is the second hub (same model) that I have bought (the first got zapped by lightning!). The price has fallen and the performance is still there. Only thing I sort of miss is the extra activity lights that were on previous model. Still this is a fantastic value for a 5 port hub.

Summary: If you don't foresee needing 100/Base T speeds, buy this
Review: Though I'm not convinced this hub is the smartest option for serious network building in the work environment, it is the perfect, inexpensive start-up for a home network. With room for five computers, it boasts more capacity than most families could reasonably use. Its 10/Base-T speed limit is faster than most homes would currently need (even cable ISPs don't give residential users faster than 10/Base-T speeds at the moment). And the product description is accurate when it claims that the hub can isolate each of the five ports, ensuring smooth transmission rates on `good' ports even if another one is bad. It's extremely unlikely, therefore, that you would need anything more vigorous than this hub to get your home or small office network up and running well.

There are down sides, however. While the 10/Base-T speeds are good for now, once ISPs begin delivering at the higher 100/Base-T speed, this hub will seem as slow as a 56kbs modem does to someone used to cable modem speeds. Also, the home user might currently have a need for a faster 100/Base hub if they play a lot of networked high-performance games between computers on their own local intranet. And that 5th port which shares with the ISP link really isn't as fast as the other ports.

Still, for most consumer needs, you shouldn't have to look further than this solid, reasonably-priced performer.
