Review: I purchased the D-Link AirPlus DI-614+ based on rebates from Dlink and my need for a wireless connection. I found setup to be a breeze from the router's side, but the wireless PCI NIC was much more work. Out of the box, both worked, but my speeds were low and I knew I had no security. On to configuration as wireless is inherently insecure. I played with the settings and read the manual to try and make sure 3 things happened: I wanted encrypted data, connection speeds of 22 Mbps and I do not want my neighbors piggybacking on my connection or into my LAN. I achieved all, but with some work and technical knowledge. The problem is that many manufacturer have moved to manuals with simple definitions of features, not detailed information about configuration. I suppose they know we rarely read them. I network Windows 2K daily, but I think others might have some difficulty configuring the advanced (necessary) features of this device. Many may not even think about security issues since it will work out of the box more or less, which will leave them open. DLink does not stress the need for security and does not explain clearly how to implement it. There is another reviewer who previously said you cannot keep your neighbor out of your LAN. This is not true as you can keep you SSID from being broadcast or use encryption to only allow your computers to connect. I tested this and verified with D-Link tech support (replied by email overnight!). He was right that they do not implement it in the same way they use to or how he wants it, but the capability is there. It again is just not done in a straightforward manner. This router also has four ports for wired access as well, so I also hooked up my other PC. Now that everything is set up, I love it. The problem I find with this and other home NAT routers is that the manufacturers put many features in the routers, but supply poor assistance and explanation in configuration. The web interface for this device is not as clear or as well organized as others and the manual is mostly definitions. This means a less technical person will spend a good deal of time setting security and may not get the 22 Mbps promised. Since this sells in Best Buy and here at Amazon.com for the standard user, more step by step instructions would help on the setups that require multiple field configurations. Overall, this is a very good product that I found works great once configured. I am not sure you will get much better in other brands. I have used Linksys, Siemans and Belkin routers and they all have some level of limited documentation and funky interfaces. PCWorld verified the 22 Mbps speed of this device and with 256 bit encryption the D-Link AirPlus DI-614+ begins to stand out among the rest.

Summary: Tech Suckport
Review: I had some problems setting up the DI-614+ and the AirPlus DWL-650+ and made a call for some technical assistance to the forever holding Technical Support. I was on the phone with them for a half hour trying to get the router and the wireless card to talk. They then told me to go to the dell web site and download and update my bios. After all that, they didn't even stay on the phone with my while I updated the bios. They said this should fix the problem, and they would send me an email with some kind of instructions for something. I asked them why couldn't they stay on the phone with me while I updated the Bios, and they said because they don't know how long it's going to take. (It only took a couple of minutes) I updated the Bios and was not surprised that it did not fix the problem. After all that, I didn't even get that e-mail they said they were going to send. I called back, and was on hold for even longer. I finally was able to fix the problem myself. After I got it up and running, I found that my signal was disconnecting and re-connecting once in a while. I went to the web site to update the firmware, and haven't had a problem yet. Hopefully that will fix the problem of the disconnecting of the signal. I was very disappointed and frustrated with D-Link's support, they really need to have people work there that know what they are talking about and train them so that they know how to solve issues problems like they are suppose to.

Summary: Fast Wireless, VPN works, Easy to get Setup, Overall GREAT!
Review: I have been officially networked for about 2 months now and just everything has been running smoothly for me since. The few problems I had (wireless rebooting, and VPN issues) were all solved with firmware upgrades. I understand that with all the millions of combinations networks, computer hardware, and the internet has things change all the time and to keep products up to date with what is changing upgrades are required. I am OK with that and will gladly upgrade whenever I have trouble doing something, or when a new feature has been added. My wireless range is perfect; it covers everywhere in my home and very little outside my home. I still use other methods of security like MAC address filtering, 128-bit WEP, Static IPs, etc. I feel very secure with D-Link hardware. I get 22Mbps speeds almost everywhere in my home, and where I don't I can still get 11Mbps. Actual speeds have been topped at 8Mbps, and lowest have been about 1-2Mbps. My VPN was rather easy to get going as well (once I upgraded the firmware on the 614+ and wireless NICs). Setup was very easy, I followed the instructions and used the setup wizard, although I was on my own when it was time for VPN, I was still able to figure it all out with a call to a friend.
I called support once and had to wait on hold for a long time before I got them, but once I got them on the line they suggested upgrading firmware, which is what fixed it all. Overall I believe I am now a D-Link customer until they do me wrong, and so far it's been a couple months and everything has worked out great.

Summary: Freedom At Last & A Great Price
Review: I have been using this card along with the D-Link AirPlus DI-614+ Wireless 22 Mbps Broadband Router for about a month with absolutely no problems. I am running this in my IBM T22 with Windows 2000 with a cable modem. I use VPN to connect to my work with no firewall problems. Other systems I used gave me nothing but problems and I wound up returning them all. It is doing exactly what I expected. The besst connection range is about 50 feet in doors. Try to locate your router in the center of your house and on the same floor you work on. Going through too many floors and walls will kill your connection. However, don't be mislead, no wireless system will work as well as hardwired. I have tried the Linksys WPC11 Wireless Network PC Card (802.11b) with Linksys BEFW11S4 Wireless 4-Port Cable/DSL Router (802.11b) it was terrible. I suggest you do not change the default setting. There is no reason to. Also, it is very important to read the install instruction FIRST. It make a big difference in the order you do things.

Summary: New 2.10 firmware fixes MAC filter, no 22 Mbps linux support
Review: New firmware corrects MAC address filtering problem, so now access is blocked to the LAN, not just the Internet. Was able to configure router to act as just a stand-alone access point, since I already have a firewall. (Use switch ports only, disable DHCP). I did not see a way to disable NAT, which most people would never care about anyway. One thing to watch out for, MAC filtering applies to both wireless and LAN connections. I enabled MAC filtering, only allowing one "fake" MAC address that I put in, and suddenly could no longer connect to the management console through the local LAN. Had to reset to factory defaults (hold reset 10 seconds), to get back into the box. Also, no Linux driver for the DWL-650+ card which is disappointing, so no 22 Mbps to Linux. I had to buy a Linksys WPC11 which worked fine with Linux and the Di-614+

Review: Okay I got this thing set up in about 20 mins with no use of the manual at all. I installed two off the D-Link pci cards and away I went. Everything was fine. Then I read the D-Link had a firmware upgrade. I upgraded and OH MY GOSH!! I got almost 2x the speed I was getting before. I am getting about 7 mbps and the router is downstairs below my room. I Love this thing so far.

Summary: BAD VPN performance-very poor support
Review: I bought this router and is dropping VPN connection, this is very annoying. When I called D'Link, the support calls goes to some third party (not direct D-Link) I have to hold for more than 2 hrs to get coonected. The support guys does not have more than the config-guide knowledge. They refered the call to D-link special tech support. Never heard back from them. Returned the router to store. No option!

Review: I bought this d-link 614+ last week and I am going to return back. This is just a nightmare to work on it. At my job I do alot of network troublshooting but this is a really a time consuming to make it to work on win XP Pro. 4 hrs attempt I was able to obtain dhcp ip address once and then I lost it when updated the firmware to ver.2.10. The only reason I updated because of thier Tech support suggested that if I update the firmware it will 100% resolve my issue next time. Well, It made it worse. After that I was not able to get the dhcp ip address from my ISP provider. Their own Tech support couldn't figure this out why its doing that. I tried on my three windows xp machines got the same result. Also their TEch support are not that great, they know few things and after that they tell you shut down the pc plus the router wait 5 min. if still on status configuration not showing ip address give us a call back.LOL, good luck another word he runs out of solution.
