Review: Absolutely no difficulty installing the unit for DSLservice. One hint: If you are not experienced with wiring Class 5cable (I was not), visit the linksys website for instructions and wiring diagrams. You might save yourself time and frustration. Good luck!

Review: I have used Bell Atlantic DSL now for 6 months with a single PC (btw..it worked well, I guess I was lucky). After reading about this product, I decided it was time to connect my other computers. Read the instructions, connected the router between my ethernet card equipped PC and the Westel DSL modem (straight through cable). I had to disable the PPoe software from Bell running on my PC before starting. Next I checked the TCP/IP and the DHCP configurations as per the router manual. I started my web browser and pointed it to the router. The config was easy, not much to do. I changed the router default password, enabled PPoe, DHCP, and entered my ISP user name and password (the router now logs in for me). Reset everything and rebooted the PC. All came up in a few minutes and WORKS! Really cool, connected my other PCs and they work great at the same time. Should have done this 6 months ago.

Summary: Worked as advertised
Review: While, for some reason, I could not get the 1-port Linksys router to 'take'it's IP address, despite several restarts, the 4-port version worked instantly, with high-speed access now available from both PCs. As it's also a full-duplex 10/100 hub, so I'll just set my old hub aside and save an outlet.

Summary: Bad router
Review: This router i purchased thinking it would be able to rout a full 10Mbit input and it could only rout a small 1Mbit and it caused my speeds to decrease from 750KBps with out a router to 14 to 40KBps with it.. I also had bad connection problems and the screens came up garbled a lot on the web.. and connetions were allways getting reset.. so i returned this product and am now happy with my NetGear RT311 router which can support a lot of speed and more features then this one can

Summary: DSL Router works great with PPPoE Login Type DSL
Review: I use the DSL Service from SWBell, PacTel, etc. that uses PPPoE logon. I could not get other methods of sharing my DSL account to work because of the need to logon to the DSL account over a Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet. The DSL Router from LinkSys works great with the newest firmware that will automatically connect and login to your DSL account. The Network Address Translation (NAT) Firewall is simple and not as powerful as other Firewalls, but it is a great first line of defense. I added Norton Intenet Security 2000 on my PC to compliment. The DHCP Server works great automatically assigning IP addresses to my PC on the home network. All this sounds complicated, but was very easy to setup and configure. It took about 5-15 minutes to install and setup and then I was online with 4 PC's via one DSL address!

Summary: Great product, needs more documentation, mIRC a no go...
Review: I purchased this product to share my dsl connection between two computers in my home. To the end of providing netsurfing and email contact to these machines, the router was simple to set up and both machines were up in a very short time. As far as install time goes, I dont think you could reasonably ask for better.I did run into a problem trying to access Dalnet's servers on IRC with the standard mIRC client. Basically, the problem comes when the server tries to identify the computer and can't get to it, assuming it is hiding it's ID with devious intent, you are automatically "killed" from the system. This only happens on Dalnet, as far as I can tell. I tried to forward the port (113 in this case) without solving the problem, even tried DMZ without success. I might be setting it up wrong myself, but the screen will accept any valid entry, even if the setting doesn't approximate something usable. My problem isn't so much that the manual isn't very specific about how to do this (although that would be sooooo simple, with possibly with a example and screenshots for each step) because they are clear to let you know they don't even support all of their OWN features, much less someone elses program. Tech support had no clue what IRC was, which didn't bolster my confidence that they had researched what it might be used for. It just surprised me that they were not prepared in any way for what is a common use for computers these days, which is keeping in touch through chat rooms. And I have been able to get no help in resolving what I know is a simple setup analomy. Frustrating. However, in honesty, I can't rate the unit poorly for the oversight of support and manuals. As a piece of networking hardware, it does a great job and is very configurable. I like it a lot, but I am very frustrated that the documentation and tech support is so poor. It really holds down a good product from being a great one. By the way, any suggestions on this are welcome at rickpark@swbell.net

Summary: Router yes, customer service no
Review: Pray that you have no problems configuring this router for your network as Linksys customer support is clearly inadequate. After receiving the router I was unable to configure it from my Windows 98 P500, but I WAS able to configure it from my 4 year old p166 running Win 95 - despite identical networking settings on both systems. A call to Linksys led to an operator who assured me that my call would be returned shortly. Well, THREE DAYS later, I happend to be sitting at my desk to catch the phone call from a tech rep who had a quick solution - but, come on, three days? The product does, in the end, work as advertised and is an excellent value for all of the features. Just buy it knowing that you may need to wait a few days for tech support.

Review: I was up and running with my Cable Modem and 2 computers in 20 minutes. Shields Up says that I am STEALTH MODE on all ports and my system is virtually invisible to the internet.

Summary: Using PACBell DSL with P.P.P.o.E. and a Dynamic IP address
Review: I've been sitting on the fence wondering whether to buy the LinkSys unit or not. The main reason for my wait, is that I've read many reviews of the LinkSys BEFSR41, including all of the information on the LinkSys web site, but it seems that no one is using the exact same DSL setup as I am. They either have PACBell and a Dynamic IP address, but no P.P.P.o.E, or they have PACBell and P.P.P.o.E and a static IP address. I finally decided to just buy the unit and hope it would work. I just install it and it took about 10 mins. Before buying the unit I would start my computer and a program called "DSL Link 300" would run at startup and log me on to the Internet. I would then start my IE browser and a pop-up menu would display which I would then click on the "Try Again" button which would allow my browser to view the Internet. After installing the LinkSys unit, I no longer need to run the "DSL Link 300" program. The LinkSys unit does the connecting for me. Also I don't have to click on that irritating "Try Again" button, as soon as I start my browser it's on-line. I have two comments about the setup instructions that came with the unit. First there was no mention in the instruction on how to set the P.P.P.o.E. setting on the setup page of the LinkSys menu. What you need to do is check the enable button for P.P.P.o.E. and enter the same user name and password that you put in the "DSL Link 300" program. Also, it wasn't necessary for me to change any of the network setting from the one's which had been set during the original installation of my DSL. I hope I've been able to help other PACBell customers who have the same DSL setup as I do and have been wondering if this unit would work for them. PS. I ordered my LinkSys BEFSR41 from Amazon.com on June 18, 2000 and received it today June 21, 2000, not bad.
