Summary: up and running in less than 30 minutes
Review: Being a Mac, Linux, and PC household, we tried another router first (won't mention the name here). It had major problems whenever more than one computer connected to it. So it went back and we got this one. The Linksys was up and running with two of the three machines in less than 30 minutes. We're using Sprint's broadband service (DSL and Cable are not readily available in Tucson) and this little box lets us share an average of 4000Kbps downloads across the three computers (and the monthly charge is less than DSL and Cable, too)! We have not had any problems with CRC or anything, so it's getting 5 stars for now.

Summary: No Worries!
Review: This product was easy to install and configure. I replaced 3 @Home IPs with one and save $14 month, in about 10 months the unit will pay for itself.

Summary: The Jury is still out
Review: This is more of a 5-star rating for Amazon.com than a rating for the router. I received the router yesterday, and it didn't work. The "Diag" self-test illuminated and never turned off... indicating the router never came out of the self-test successfully. I couldn't connect to it from my PC to upgrade the firmware because it was stuck in self-test mode. I called Amazon.com and they are sending out a new one. Minimal hassle. I'll write another review on the router when I get the replacement.

Summary: Easy setup/Reliable functionality
Review: I do work as a computer consultant and have setup, in excess of, 20 of these devices never running into any issues other than possibly not knowing a setting specific to an ISP. It's user friendly Web interface is well designed. I would have liked to seen more in the Setup guide for novice network users but overall it is a nice product.

Summary: Perfect for family or home office use
Review: Setup was very simple - I was up and running in mere minutes.

It would have been nice if they included a few CAT5 cables.

I started noticing corrupted FTP uploads, but that was fixed by upgrading the firmware.

It is very easy to mix static and DHCP addresses on the network, though the manual doesn't say specifically how to do this; your static addresses need to be in the range below the starting DHCP address.

Be sure to upgrade the firmware as soon as you can - they have fixed a great many bugs.

This is not a heavyweight router/firewall; if you want that, you should set up a system with two NICs and a hub. If you want a solution that is inexpensive, easy to set up, and secure, then this is the product for you.

Summary: Best I know of
Review: This little product has been with me since it became available in Feb 2000. On the @Home network it works great. It's fast, and reliable. I've not had to think about it much. I've set NetMind to watch Linksys' page for firmware updates, and I'll occasionally watch the blinking lights on the front of the unit.

And firmware 1.33.1 BETA also adds logging of incoming and outgoing traffic so that I can watch for suspicious behaviour. In this first revision it's very rough around the edges, but at least it logs the traffic.

You can't beat this for its price range. For a home use, or a home office/SOHO, it will more than do.

Summary: Best Cable/DSL modem sharing device available!
Review: Hands down the best value in home internet sharing devices! I bought one for my apartment and set it up on my cable modem very easily. I spent longer on hold getting my cable modem reprovisioned to work with the router's ethernet hardware address than I did setting the thing up! I used it for a couple months, then got one for my younger sister to use at home and recommended it to my girlfriend. Both have been using theirs for months with no problems. All the same, if you don't know much about networking or computers or want to have a web server in your house, you may need a friend with more experience to help - while sufficient, the manual isn't exactly a "For Dummies" book. Linksys seems to be making firmware updates readily available on their site too - so you can easily upgrade to get any new functionality available.

Summary: Super product makes networking a breeze
Review: Don't be afraid to give this product a try. I found it very easy to install and configure with my cable modem. The documentation was complete and easy to follow. The advanced features are covered in the manual and in the HELP function as part of the router interface. I hooked up three PC's in less than 30 minutes, which includes the rebooting required by Windows. The download speeds are the same with the router as they were when my PC was connected directly to the cable modem. The firewall features keep my PC from being accessed from the internet. (which I could do when the PC was hooked directly to the cable modem) You can't go wrong with this product.

Summary: Worked on the first try and still works fine.
Review: I've read some negative reviews, but none of them reflect my experience with this product. I don't think it's fair to blame a good product for the problems caused by people who really don't know what they're doing. For me, it worked on the first try, the default configuration fit my needs almost perfectly and the four switched ports replaced my old hub. I did need to open two TCP/IP ports, one for DCC Send and the other for Napster uploads, but this was easy thanks to the web-based interface. I would recommend the Linksys firewall for any home or small office user needing to share a cable modem or DSL connection, so long as they don't consider themselves absolutely clueless about network basics.

Summary: Linksys DSL/Cable Router easy solution to sharing
Review: After 2 frustrating weeks of tryig to get various software sharing schemes to work on my small network, I came across this unit by accident. I was so frustrated, I figured it could do nothing but help. Within 5 minutes of receiving the unit and hooking it up, my sharing of a wireless broadband connection was perfect. It has been running there ever since without problems. Granted for someone who plays games over the internet, makes direct connections to others (such as ICQ file sharing) it will take some tweaking. FOr the average internet user this is a great alternative to software solutions that require the "Host" or "Proxy Server" to be always on.
