Summary: Works great ... so long proxy
Review: I was using a proxy server for my home DSL - this is much better, simplier and relatively easy to install.

My ping went down to 40 from 110 so I can use the rail gun in quake3 on the internet.

I have set up a proxy server so this is a breeze for me... has a built in web server... seems to work better with IE as a browser than Netscape.

If you have no experience seting up a router or proxy and NAT. This will be only a little painful only because of your misconceptions on how internet protocols work. But if you try for a while it will work.

I did not need to talk to the help desk so can't say much about customer service.

Enjoy

Summary: Big Troubles when the wall crumbles
Review: I bought this product, and after setting it up and configuring a Linksys card, (just over 4.5 hours later) it worked beautifully.... that is until a few days ago. It started freezing up, and then yesterday I returned to find a router that does not work.

I have now spent 12+ hours and talked to 6 expert techs that have no idea how to fix this problem. Most of the "experts" are less skilled in computer networking than I am and I am a film director. Additionally, the software does not fire correctly, and once on the wrong path is not recoverable.

Therefore, I would be very weary of jumping in. When it works, it is beautiful, but when it crashes you are abandoned and without support or help.... Make your decision.

Summary: Question???
Review: Actually this a Question not a review of this product. I'm a real fan of LinkSys so I'm already convinced to buy this Router. But my question is if anybody has ever tried to use this router and host a Web Server (Win NT) on Cable Modem and also connect 3 PCs in a Local Network using 1 Static IP Address from @home?

Summary: Great features for a small price
Review: I was skeptical this product would deliver everything it professed when I first ordered it, considering how much standalone switches and routers cost. I figured quality and reliability would suffer as a result of the low price. I was wrong.

This product delivers. The built-in PPPoE authentication is cool, and makes DSL connections hassle-free. I've really only had two technical issues with it:

o Initially wasn't able to forward IPsec packets (used in VPN). Firmware upgrade fixed.

o Troubles with built-in DHCP handing out duplicate addresses if two computers come up around the same time. Workaround was to let 1st PC fully boot, then boot 2nd PC.

Other than that, it's a breeze. With this price, it can't be beat.

Summary: Nice concept, bad execution
Review: I had hoped that the LinkSys would offer me a simplified mannerof sharing my Cable connection on my LAN, and offer me more controland ease of configuration with server side applications I occasionallyhost. Previously I used Sygate, a "modem sharing gateway"application.

The LinkSys is a nice, polished item with a fewshortcomings. The primary reason I bought this item was the"DMZ" feature. I wanted to ability to put one of mymachines, hosting a Quake3 server, in the DMZ. This should circumventhaving to worry about which ports need to be opened up in yourfirewall. You effectively expose your entire computer to theInternet. Not very security safe, but an effective way of dealing witha game server. Unfortunately, there appears to be something wrong withthe LinkSys router's NAT translation. It just will not work with Quake3.

So I am back to Sygate, and returning the Linksys. If you arelooking for an easy to configure SOHO solution for basic productivityand connectivity, the LinkSys is probably a great solution... It isnot an ideal solution for gamers. In my opinion, it is still animmature product.

Finally, I want to say, although LinkSys blames IDand ID blames Linksys, I think the problem is solely with theRouter. Other NAT solutions (Like Sygate) evidently work fine forQuake 3. Several hardware routers exhibit the problems with hosting Q3seen with the LinkSys. I'm running a Q3 server right now on a Sygatebox with no problem. It really is a shame, because I wanted to likethis product, and there are so many nice things about it.

Summary: I HAVE ONE AND LOVE IT
Review: Well I didn't buy one from amazon.com but I got one from my local internet provider because we kept being hacked and well it solved that. It stoped the hackers and well they got busted. It doesn't seem to slow you down really because I download lots of FULL CDS AND MOVIES and well none of them are slow. I am always up around 100 KB/S which is really fast for any of you people out there that download. I won't say that this can't be hacked but it is very difficult. You can hack anything but almost everybody around doesn't have the skills to hack this modem and I CAN PERSONALLY SAY THAT IS TRUE!

Summary: No problems at all
Review: I bought this after getting a cable modem and wanting to share the connection with 3 computers. I've read where people had problems getting it set up, but if you know a little about DHCP, static and dynamic IP addresses, there's no problem at all. 10 minutes to set up and it works perfectly with Win2000, 98, linux and solaris.

Summary: Networking for Dummies
Review: An absolutely stellar performer for sharing the DSL data pipe between my three networked computers. Plug it in, follow the initial setup directions, and you're on your way. Although tech support took a day and a half to contact me regarding a minor technical problem, most users shouldn't have to worry about contacting them unless they are running NT or Win2K Server. The tech support was right on target. Do you want to maximize the use of the data pipe you pay for? Then this is the way to do it. I can't speak for cable folks, but my DSL connection doesn't miss a beat with three users pounding the net.

Summary: I can't be more satisfied
Review: I can't be more satisfied with this product. For a home network on a budget, this is exactly what I needed. Just keep in mind that this is a $... HOME product, not professional grade business equipment. I started to get a little worried at some of the reviews regarding ftp crc errors, but I just finished download about 680Mb worth of data at an average of 150kbps and had no problems. One of the things that may have helped was a firmware upgrade released last week to version 1.35.

The setup on this box was also fairly easy. If you just take your time, and adapt the instructions to your particular cable/dsl ISP, then all should work ok. It took me less than an hour to get the router configured, the firmware upgraded (which clears the config), the router re-configured, web access, and mail sending/receiving. This was only for one computer, as now I have to spend today making cables and wiring up the rest of the rooms in my house.
