Summary: Works like a charm!!
Review: On cable-modem installation here in MASS, this little jewel works perfectly, right out of the box! Very easy to setup and use (I expected it to be somewhat difficult, but it was VERY EASY!). Even a firmware upgrade, downloaded from Linksys' web site installed very easily! Works real well, even over moderately long cable run (from an upstairs office to my basement "workshop"), at very nice data rates! Top-notch security too!! See other commentaries about changing passwords, though!! Do it when you first install, then don't worry about a thing!! GREAT PRODUCT! (and I paid more for mine 6months ago!)--true bargain now!

Summary: Excellent Product for Home or Small Office
Review: Very easy setup for someone with a little bit of network background. I am a developer with a small company and the Linksys met our needs for the short term. It is nice that you can route traffic based on port to specific machines inside the firewall. (ie Port 80>web server or port 25>SMTP mail server etc). Unfortunately we needed a router that could allow us to access multiple servers on the same port from the internet and the Linksys could not meet the need.(It does not have a routing table for IP) We ended up purchasing a $900 device that could perform this task. I would highly recommend this device if you don't have these specific needs.

Summary: A great purchase
Review: I picked up this unit to allow my wife and I to both play "EverQuest" at the same time over our one DSL connection. We'd previously been using a cheap Ethernet hub (much cheaper: about a quarter of the price) and SpoonProxy software. And it worked. Mostly. For many things. When one of the computers wasn't doing something too processor-intensive. And the other computer could never do RealAudio, Java, most Flash or programs like Instant Messenger or "Diablo II"'s Battle.net service. But I'd been told that, despite not being able to play any online gaming services on one of the computers with my Ethernet hub, the LinkSys router would solve all that. So I put down the money, opened it up, and within an hour -- most of which was spent undoing the previous overly complicated set-up -- both machines were online. Like many of the reviewers here, I noticed a performance improvement, but I was more pleased by something that few people seem to be focussing on here: We also got firewall protection by using this. My wife's computer had previously been invaded by an outside computer, somewhere in Eastern Europe. Nothing sinister had happened to it, but the fact that a personal computer with an always-on DSL connection had been broken into was fairly frightening. Now we're safe, secure (or much more secure, anyway) and we're both able to play "EverQuest" at the same time. I'm thrilled we picked this up, and recommend it for anyone sharing a DSL line with multiple computers. It was easy to set up and worth every penny.

Summary: Great product
Review: I had lots of trouble using the WinPOeT software required for my Verizon DSL connection. I uninstalled that garbage product and used the LinkSys router instead: all the problems are gone and my DSL is faster, too. Good instructions, just a fine product.

Summary: Best in Class for Home Use
Review: I have a cable modem and was using the Netgear router (RT314), but was very unhappy with the performance and limited features. I decided to try the Linksys to see if the results would be better. The Linksys was clearly a superior product. It provided easier installation, three times the number of features and an intuitive interface. With the Linksys Router if you have one static IP address you can easily host a Web Sever or Email Sever on different machines. You can easily mix and match dynamic and static IP address behind the router for a large variety of possibilities. The combination of a router, firewall, proxy services (NAT), DMZ and switch all in once product can potentially save over a thousand dollars in equipment costs. I would strongly recommend to everyone that they change their passwords for security reasons. Thank you Linksys for building a better mousetrap!

Summary: It sounded too good to be true...............
Review: But it is...this is one of the easiest routers I ever installed, it works beautifully with Bellsouth Dsl and even made my conection faster...almost plug and play. If you want to network all of your computers at home run to the store and get this. It's awesome.

Review: Very easy to set up and use. I have one PC connected directly, two indirectly via the LinkSys telephone bridge and a printer indirectly through a hub.

Summary: Not for beginners
Review: This is a neat little box, but it is not for beginners. If you don't understand networks and DSL, you'll find it frustrating to use. If you are an expert, it probably deserves five stars for price/performance. If you are an consumer with no particular technical savvy, the rating falls dramatically. I never bothered to contact Linksys's customer support, but other reviewers' complaints have the ring of truth. To further complicate matters, your DSL service provider may be less than terrific. In San Francisco, for instance, PacBell is lousy. If your confidence level is high, buy this. Otherwise, you may want to wait until the technology improves. DSL today is like the internet was in 1995.

Summary: Works great, especially for the price!
Review: I have worked with commercial firewalls at my job (Checkpoint, Guardian, Checkpoint PIX, etc), so I was curious to see if this inexpensive Linksys Cable/DSL Router would really work for my home network which is connected to a cable modem. Well, it works great with everything that I have thrown at it. Windows 2000, Linux, Solaris, NT 4.0, VPN, etc. I have connected up to 5 machines behind it at one time and I've had no problems. Opening up ports for certain apps (ie. http, ftp, Terminal Server) all work great! I really haven't had any problems after 6 months of use.

Summary: Almost easy enough for a newbie to use.
Review: I was a newbie purchasing 3 separate computers. I wanted access to cable internet without the security risk and without paying for three separate accounts. Networking with the Linkys was my neighbor's solution (a computer geek). I was able to plug everything in by myself, but needed help from my neighbor and a local high-school computer wizard in order to get everything running smoothly. (It seems the local cable internet company I'm using doesn't provide support for networks and wouldn't provide the necessary information needed.) They figured it out easily though, and we were up and running within an hour. According to a reliable internet source, my system is "stealth" to hackers. I haven't had any problems and am delighted with this system. When I tell people we have a network, they think it's pretty sophisticated and start using technical lingo that I don't understand. I have to tell them that I'm new at this computer stuff, and to slow down. They're amazed that a newbie is able to have a network that actually works like it's supposed to.
