Summary: IMPORTANT IMPORTANT IMPORTANT
Review: Great product BUT if you are on AT and T cable -- they HAVE TO PING YOUR NEW ROUTER!!! The instructions don't tell you this and I screwed around with it for 2 hours before calling AT and T to see if it was a problem on their end! They need the mac address off the router to ping it. I was up in 5 minutes after at&t did their thing.

Best thing about this thing over a net hub is the computers can access the web individually, w/o the server computer being turned on. I like it.

Summary: Excellent!
Review: The 4 Port Linksys Cable/DSL Router is the best out there. Others I've seen have had too much security, or major flaws, but the Linksys Router fits in there as a perfect 10. Although, I wish that they would ship the router with the new firmware update so you don't have to download it, but the update is VERY easy to setup.

The Linksys router has outstanding firewall protection, and is better than using a computer as a gateway, because then that machine will have to be on 24/7, so u can always get online. But with the Linksys Router, no problem. I highly reccommed this to anyone who is looking for an internet sharing solution, and please READ THE INSTRUCTIONS! Some are having problems with this router because they're men, LoL, and most men never read directions.

Summary: Unable to reset for forgotten password
Review: This router worked great, until I disconnected the network and later tried to replace and reconfigure it. (Internal reconfiguration is easy and quick but first you've got to get there.)

I forgot the name and password I assigned and wound up with a hunk of useless iron. Linksys tech support told me that a 20-second reset (as opposed to the usual 3-second reset) would clear it to defaults and allow log-in with the "admin" password used on new equipment.

It doesn't happen and I've been unable to get any further guidance from Linksys tech support which appears to have gotten unresponsive in recent weeks (as of 4/8/01).

This is an alert against being as dumb as I was but I'd like to start using it again. If anybody has an idea on how to reset the thing please e-mail me at fjmurray@mindspring.com.

Summary: Not a simple install
Review: I set up a Linksys 4-port router and I am extremely pleased. It is fast, fast, fast! However, I too have DSL from a provider that supports PPPoE and let me tell you, it pays to have friends who know network architecture! I am a programmer but a mere developer is no match for this baby. I worked with Linksys online support and the tech told me the router was defective, and to send it back to Amazon. I didn't believe him, and my tech friend didn't either. Ten minutes on the phone and we had it up and running, set to fixed IP addresses for my PCs (not DHCP). Once its up and running, it is a brave new world. I would rate it 5 stars if mere mortals could install it.

Summary: Rough Going with PPPoE
Review: I installed the product to share a DSL connection between two PCs. My ISP uses PPPoE for login... this was a real pain to get working. I finally got it working by talking to engineers I work with at work, as far as how to configure each PC, and also Linksys gave me a firmware patch by email that seemed to make the PPPoE login work much better. Now it works flawlessly, but I guess you have to be a network engineer to get it working in some situations.

Summary: Forget video conferencing
Review: Works well as a router once I figured out the proper on/off - reset -reboot sequence. The big disappointment is conferencing. Broadband internet access enables video conferencing -- which worked great before I added the router. It has some wierd settings that are supposed to make video possible but they haven't worked for me. So now I can route the DSL connection around the home network but not to do what I most wanted to do. Give me back my cable internet with multiple addresses and NO ROUTERS!

Summary: Linksys easy router set up is GREAT 5 minutes!!
Review: I just installed the 4 port linksys and it is the easiest piece of hardware I have ever put in!!! If you are going to use DHCP it is already programmed. My PC came up already connected to to ISP and I didnt have to go thru the programming. ( I did anyway just so I would know what was going on) The 3 other PCs in my house came up just as easy. This is a great inprovement over MS Internet Connection Sharing software and a hub that I was using before. I highly recommend this for anyone who wants to share PCs over a cable connection.

Summary: Excellent product
Review: This is truly a great product. I have run proxy servers in the past to share my broadband, and it was always a headache. I purchased this product and have not had any problems. It was easy to install and set up, and it is very expandable. I have added their 2 port printserver, and several hubs, again without any trouble. I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to share their broadband connection, this product is perfect for both the new computer user and the experienced professional.

Summary: Worth the purchase!!
Review: This is by far the best router for the money. Fully functional as soon as you plug it in. I'm using AT&T@Home cable net, you don't notice even the slightest change in speed with 3 computers hooked on the same line. Intranet flys. The router also acts as a firewall- denies the majority of incoming requests from Napster :) but interferes with a lot of voice-chat rooms (not always good). Had only one problem: setting up e-mail and news accounts. If you are using the e-mail accounts given by the ISP, you need to spend some time trying to scan your ISP server finding its real name. Once you get the server names it's great.

Summary: Dont buy this unreliable router. Buy Netgear instead.
Review: This machine does not work properly. Every so often it "freezes up" and has to be power-cycled (i.e. unplug it from the wall) to get it working again. (This information is actually in the manual!) About two months after buying it I bought a Netgear router instead, which is a far superior and much more stable product. My netgear has been running for 3600 hours (150 days) without any freezes, lock-ups, or other nonsense.
