Summary: Great product, horrible support
Review: When I first bought the BEFSR41 router, I loved it. It was very easy to install, it worked flawlessly for months, and I never had a complaint about it. That was until the power adapter broke (not the the fault of Linksys, I have to take responsibility for that one). I quickly found Linksys' technical support to be among the worst I'd ever dealt with. After being put on hold for about a half an hour, I was told that someone would have to call me back, which they did - 7 hours later. When I finally spoke to someone, and asked if I could buy a replacement power cord for this router, I was told that the only way to fix the power cord was the box up and return the entire router. After days of waiting for the return forms I needed to do so (apparently their email server was broken for days, so they had trouble sending them to me) I simply gave up and bought a NetGear RT314, which I've been happy with ever since. All in all this product was great, but the support was deplorable - something that could be fixed if addresses by Linksys, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Summary: Well, that was boring
Review: I plugged it all in and it worked. Thank you, good night, and drive safely. Oh, sorry, you wanted a few details, didn't you? For a household like ours (darling wife has an iMac, dear hubby has a PC), the Linksys EtherFast 4-port Cable/DSL Router was the right choice. With 2 more ports than we needed right away, we're ready for whatever the future may bring, like safely and effortlessly transferring files from desktops to laptops. The Linksys EtherFast 4-port Cable/DSL Router combines all the essentials for sharing a high speed Internet connection and simple networking in one box. After you configure your computers for the TCP/IP network protocol, you plug them into the ports marked "1" through "4". Your cable or DSL high speed internet connection plugs into the port marked "WAN" (Wide Area Network). Now, here's the best part. You DON'T have to install ANY additional software on ANY of the computers connected to the router! A recent version of Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator is all you need to configure it by "logging into"...a phony "web site" that resides inside the router itself. You enter your login information, if necessary, and the router itself pretends to be a PC logging into your internet provider. It even supports PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet), a protocol favored by many DSL providers because it allows one infrastructure to support both high-speed and Dial-up Networking subscribers. Once that's done, the router's IP address is the only thing the rest of the world ever sees. Its built-in firewall keeps prying eyes away from your hard drives. For added security, you can update the firmware to support ZoneAlarm Pro and PC-cillin. The only hitch I encountered during installation occurred when I followed Lynksys's instructions and powered off my DSL modem between reboots. I had more success leaving it powered up. It would be impossible for Linksys to come up with universal instructions for every cable and DSL modem out there, so this can be overlooked.

Summary: Ports 3 & 4 quit working
Review: It worked fine for about a year and now ports 3 & 4 stopped working. I'll probably buy a different brand next time, maybe Netgear or 3-Com.

Summary: So simple a child could install it
Review: Not much to say except it is so easy to setup. Make sure you unplug all your devices including the Cable/DSL modem to insure you get a fresh IP. The complaints from other users are meant only for hard core users who wish to run servers, they have more advanced routers for their needs. Yet if you are a home user who just wants to share a cable/DSL line with 2 or more PC's, you can't beat this low cost router.

Summary: Windows XP and Router
Review: Just received the Linksys 4-Port router today and had it up and running in 15 minutes. I have been using a cable modem for a while and was concerned about security issues. The installation with Windows XP was easy. I plugged the unit in, made the required connections, started up the system and it is working flawlessly. The only grip is that the directions make no mention of Windows XP installation and setup. Apparently there is none. the computer works dne and I have my connection. I plan on adding another computer to my house in the near future and it will be very easy to connect it to my router. If only all computer products were this easy to install. Tim

Summary: Worked Out of the Box
Review: With only a quick reference to the quickstart guide I took it out of the box, hooked in my PC with WinXP, PC with RedHat Linux, a Laptop running WinXP and a DSL Modem, and everything connected up first time, and stayed that way. I did download and run the lastest firmware upgrade from the LinkSys website just to be sure all known problems were fixed. ...and after 3 months, still no problems.

Summary: Great if you're just surfing...
Review: I got this router with 2 equal intentions: Share a DSL line, and host a server with it's port forwarding features. The box has worked great for sharing the line, but has been a nightmare for servers on my lan... the longest it has worked is 1 day, and now it won't work at all. If you're wanting to host a server behind this box, look around at other choices.

Summary: riddance from PPPoE!
Review: The linksys router is great even if you only have one computer. It takes care of PPPoe, connecting and authenticating as it needs, so your system is under the impression that you're connected directly to the network (through a proxy, of course). Which is great, because I always hated dialing up - even if only takes seconds. Plus, it puts you behind the linksys firewall, making you virtually impervious to any attack (no more cpu-cycle eating firewall applications). Now add to that the fact that you can split your network to 4 to 253 (via hubs) ports, and you get an excellent product, at a very modest price. It requires no computer software - often your computer doesn't even know it's there - and has an easily flashable BIOS. In minutes, I managed to connect 3 machines, effortlessly. The router comes with a throng of options, and allows you to dialup on demand (to your pppoe provider), or send constant keepalive signals, to keep you from being disconnected. Probably the best seventy-something bucks I ever spent. One last issue: the router constantly emits a mild hum - about as loud as a quiet computer fan. Noticeable, but nothing very significant - just don't keep the router near your pillow :)

Summary: Great Product
Review: I must say, this device has saved my family from chaos! We used to have only one computer with broadband, and everyone would be forced to fight over it. Now, however, we can all be online at the same time sharing a broadband connection. There is minimal configuration required with this product, so even computer dummies can use it! Moreover, it acts as a network hub so that you can share files and resources with other computers in your workgroup (home network). I have had no problems with this product and I definately recommend it.

Summary: GOOD PRICE, BUT NOTHING STANDS BEHIND IT.
Review: I BOUGHT THIS ROUTER TO NETWORK MY HOME OFFICE GOT THE WAN LINK LIGHT TO COME ON BUT IT COULD NEVER LOCATE MY ROUTER, AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS AND RESETTINGS, I CALLED THE TECHNICAL SUPPORT LINE WHICH (SUPPOSE TO BE) OPENED 24 HOURS 7 DAYS A WEEK GOT A RECORDING OUR OFFICE IS CLOSED TODAY PLEASE LEAVE A MESSAGE AND SOMEONE WILL GET BACK TO YOU. I WENT THROUGH THIS FOR TWO DAYS. I FINALLY GOT A TECH. HE DIDN'T SOUND TOO INTERESTED IN HELPING ME, HE COULD NOT GET THE SYSTEM TO OPERATE EITHER. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE STORE PICKED UP A SIEMEN SPEEDSTREAM 4 PORT DSL ROUTER TOOK NO MORE THAN 30 MINUTES TO SET UP NOW MY MACHINES ARE RUNNING FINE.
THE ROUTER MAY BE A GOOD ROUTER BUT THE TECHNICAL SUPPORT TEAM REALLY [stinks]
