Summary: excellent, but get some help if you're a newbie
Review: I've had no problems at all with my router for about 5 months so far. I get slick speeds and I've been able to connect a PC, a Mac G4 and a laser printer. I plan to add another PC soon.My internet provider tried to get me to buy a hub and another IP address (for an additional $10 a month). I originally thought they could get away with this because the service checked the hardware code on my ethernet card. That was my biggest stumbling block - once I realized I could "clone" my ethernet hardware code on the router (basically change the identifying code of the router to match the ethernet card), everything was perfect... I'd give it 5 stars, but these initial difficulties indicate that it would be helpful to have a tech-nerd around to get it started if necessary.

Review: I have been using this router for just over a year and it has worked perfectly from day one. I especially like the automatic firewall feature since I am using a cable modem to connect to the internet.

Summary: Great product, no problems
Review: I've had this router for over a year and haven't yet had a problem. The DHCP works great... just plug in a computer and it works. No set up hassles with adding computers to the network, just plug it in and go. i think it was worth every penny. Buy this product if you are looking for a quick and easy network hub with DSL/Cable routing capabilities.

Summary: Great value/performance, easy to configure.
Review: As with most Linksys products, this product is a great buy. The easy-to-use web-based management system, convenient and stylish design, great performance, excellent security and good driver/bios update support, and Linksys's great customer service make this a good buy for users of any level.
I've personally bought and installed 15 of these devices (some were the 8-port model, but the same product overall) for some of my clients who need VPN and firewall support for their private networks over their broadband connection. Remote management support also makes administering these a snap.

Summary: Product has a high defect rate
Review: I bought a v1 BEFSR41 in summer 2000 and it broke just after the warranty period ended in fall 2001. Flashing red Diag light was on and the flash update fails. Out of warranty thus out of luck.

Summary: Working with Qwest DSL
Review: I love the router! Here's some tips for working with Qwest (MSN) DSL. Both the Qwest Router and the Linksys Router use the same ... IP addresses to assign to home computers. You have to change the Linksys Router IP's first to something different. You do this in the Linksys Router set-up web page. It is very easy to understand! Step two is to plug the Qwest router into the Linksys Router, the Linksys Router into your computer, and then run the Qwest install CD. The Qwest Router gives the Linksys Router an IP number, then assigns itself. Everything runs like clockwork! Knowing this would have saved me some time.

Summary: Works well, but not for long
Review: I've had this router for about 2 years, and it worked great for the first year. Very easy to use web based interface for basic setup and for more advanced configuration. However, after about a year port 3 stopped working. This also happened to me with another Lynksys product (4 port hub), that I had bought previously, and was being used at my parents house until two of the ports went bad. If you want a product that will last more than a year or two, I recommend spending a little extra money and getting a different brand.

Summary: Gave my DSL New Life
Review: I love it. I had to get a world-class nerd to configure it for a price, but it is great to use.
When the system comes on, all is on. I do not have to use software to connect to the internet or wait for my isp to connect. It is on in an instant. No problems whatsoever!
It is easy to install and use, but complicated to configure.
So what! It works great. Both computers seem to have better connection speeds also. How it does this is a mystery to me, but then again.......I am not a nerd.

Summary: Easy Installation
Review: While I have a strong electronic background, I am just slightly dangerous when it comes to computers. This installation was as pain-free as anything I have installed on a computer. I kept thinking that I was missing something somewhere. My installation took about 15 minutes and everything works great. The only hitch I found was that the quick installation instructions do not mention PPoE setup for an ADSL connection. A quick look at the full instructions provided the answers. And yes... It is a version 2, not a version 1!

Summary: Problems from the start; unable to set-up
Review: The problems started with the enclosed "set-up wizard" CD, which you're supposed to run before you begin to install router. It claims to be able to detect your connection settings and facilitate set-up. Despite being up and running with a high-speed connection on a brand-new Sony, the software insisted that no connection was available and refused to let me proceed. I tried to set up the router manually, which proved impossible. The manual is extremely detailed but is clearly not intended for the home user (even a fairly computer-literate one). Furthermore, Windows XP does not recommend setting up the network as described in the manual -- it advises using a gateway router instead for a home network. I wound up returning the device. I suggest getting a gateway-router clearly intended for the home user. This appears to be intended for someone highly familiar with network installations, and the set-up software has a "fatal" glitch (at least on my desktop).
