Summary: Works great -- as long as you dont host anything.
Review: I originally bought this thing not really knowing full well what a router could do, other than split the same IP address into subnet addresses for each computer that wants to get online.Im using EarthLink DSL, and had four computers I wanted to put online. I took it home, set it up, and had it running in no time. Ill admit, it works great when everything goes out, but having anything come in is a real pain. The router needs to setup DHCP to allow more than one computer share the same IP address. However, if you want to have a computer host a website (or a gaming server or whatever), then you need to *disable* that feature, and forward a port to just one computer. So, I could get the web hosting to work, but then the router was virtually useless to me because only one computer could use it at a time. I had options better than that without it. I had to take it back to the store becuase it couldnt reroute to my web server, and when it did, the pages wouldnt load for some reason. I checked everything, and I know it was the router. Everything worked fine without it. If youre looking to use this as a nice firewall and a router, I would highly recommend it since it works great and is easy to configure. But if you need people to access you from the outside, find something else.

Review: I just plugged in the cables and the included CD detected all my network settings etc... Almost too easy! Also works with Half Life, TFC, AIM, etc..

Summary: A real work horse
Review: My buddies and I bought this unit way back when at twice the price. After some setup screwups we all got our linkys working perfectly with our cable modems. Since then our linkys have been real work horses. I love the linky hardware firewall protection. The only time I need to drop protection and go into the linky dmz zone is for MS Netmeeting. You will not go wrong buying this product.

Summary: Can't go wrong with this router!
Review: I've had this router for 2 years, and it has been great!...Linksys has great tech support...I did fry my first one doing a firmware upgrade, but that was because I used an old TFTP program (that they supplied with a different version upgrade) for a newer upgrade (always use the one that comes with the upgrade) (plus be carefull in other ways, by not having any other programs running (including the automatic ones in your startup folder and system tray), give your computer a fresh reboot before attempting install, etc. Even though the router was fried, linksys just immediately shipped me out a new one and had me return the old one within 30 days (or else be charged). Another thing about this company is... don't immediately install new firmware updates. It's best to wait a couple-few months, then call in to their tech support to see if there are any issues with it. Besides, unless there are new features you need or really desire in the new firmware, I wouldn't recommend upgrading anyway. Anyway, this router (and company) ROCKS! (this is based on much use AND probably 40 calls to tech support over the years about various issues (most of them short questions, I try not to abuse the customer support). I don't know how they sell such a great product and support it so well when these things are going for such bargain basement prices now! I thought that even at [the price I paid}, and now I'm really flaberghasted. I know that whenever I buy network gear, it will be from Linksys in the future (as long as they continue with their excellence in both product and customer service). Anyway, if you don't neeed wireless capabilities... GET THIS ROUTER for home/small office use. If you need wireless too, then check out their BEFW11S4 (though I can't vouch for it, my bet is, if it's from Linksys, it's at least decent, if not great!)

Summary: Good price, easy to configure even on a Mac
Review: Although Linksys does not officially support the Macintosh, this router is easily configured via a your web browser so it can be configured fine on a Macintosh. The unit works well with no problems. In fact, using DHCP, you don't really have to do much configuring at all. Just plug it between your computer and your cable or dsl modem. Their 24/7 tech support is a plus. The firewall provides added security against people hacking into your machine. The unit also has 4 ports so you can share your high speed internet access with other computers. Or if a friend comes over with a laptop, he can jack into the 'net at high speeds as well! I would recommend this unit due to the price and the Linksys tech support. You should pay under $[money] for this. There are other routers out there that do the same thing so price and functionality are really the only factors to consider.

Review: I had read some previous reviews that made it seem like setting up a home network might require some work... it was so simple. And this router was a no brainer. . I followed the directions, plugged it in and it worked like a charm. I am running it between two computers.. one with XP and the other with Win98. No problems at all. . we had the 'network' up and running in 20 minutes.

Summary: Runs on Windows 98/Me/XP and Mac OSX
Review: I was apprehensive about spending [money] for the equipment (router & cables) as I am new to networking computers, but the Linksys router was SUPER easy to set up. Included is a disk with a connection wizard, but I don't see that you really need it. I already had a DSL connection with Enternet300 software installed, and I had no problems at all with the setup. Just turn off your computer, plug all the necessary cables and power cord, and turn it all back on. After your machine boots up, you enter in the IP address of the router in your web browser and go through the setup process(+/- 5 mins.). After that, uninstall whatever programs you have (like Enternet) that deal with the PPPoE(for DSL/Cable). You can use Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing(ICS) to network your computers, or choose your own network settings if you know how. A good info site for networking is [website].
I run WindowsXP and use the multi-boot option so I can run 98 and Me also. All of these systems run great with the Linksys! A friend came over with a MacG3 laptop, and plugged right in to the router, did a little configuration and was surfing at light speed in under 10 minutes. Definitely a great buy! The Linksys website also has a great FAQ site and networking tutorials. This is a must-have product for broadband users who don't want to pay extra $$$$ for more IP addresses :).

Summary: plug and play, very easy setup.
Review: I only have one computer in my house now and am getting close to having enough money to build my own system. I knew I would need a router and saw this router on sale at Best Buy, so I went out and bought it. I decided to install it to have a firewall and to play with it. I shut down my computer, plug the power into the router, plug my cable modem into the WAN port and plug my computer's network card into the router. Then I turned on the computer, and when Windows XP started, I went right to internet explorer expecting to see a Cannot Find Server page. But, I saw my homepage. Absolutley NO configuration was needed to get this working. This is an awesome router and I recommend it to anyone.

Summary: Short Life Span
Review: 6 weeks after the 1 year warranty expired on my BEFSR41 version2, the product went into an irrecoverable state in which the WAN port wasn't active, the web gui wasn't reachable by LAN port, and the red diag light just stayed lit up (even after resets as instructed by support from Linksys). ...The solution ends up being the need to purchase another cable/dsl router. The D-link DI-704P will hopefully have a longer life (it already has better features, and a better price).
Apart from the failure, the linksys is good (although missing a print server port).

Summary: Truly Plug and Play
Review: I can't believe I waited so long to buy this - something about building a "home network" was always so intimidating. For years I swapped files using floppies, CF cards, usb/parallel port cables... The [item price] seemed worth giving it a shot and I'm in love. Literally plug and play. The only thing I had to do was call my ISP to re-issue my IP address (my ISP only issues 1, and it's specific to a single network device). After that - anything I plug in works (and I've done a lot in the past week) - borrowing wifi cards, other types of network cards. Don't wait - if you've got broadband coming to your house and more than one computer - this router's for you!
