Summary: Stay away from Linksys
Review: WARNING - STAY AWAY OF LINKSYS WIRELESS ROUTERS
I've encountered nothing but problems with 3 different units. The first unit had very poor signal strength and quality. The next two units kept dropping, on average, 75% of the IP packets. How can you surf the web if your browser keeps timing out...I'll never purchase another Linksys product again eventhough I will say that the support and service is good. ...

Summary: Works Great for XBOX
Review: The BEFW11S4 v2 and WET11 work perfectly with my XBOX. Easy setup, out of box and playing games in about 20 minutes. The router is on the second floor and the bridge is in the basement. No lag! No cables strung around the house! This product fit the bill nicely.

Summary: Distance is key
Review: I had some reservations about buying another ... wireless router after my previous experiences with Netgear (which could not even connect from my basement to the main floor 2 feet away), but with the Linksys I have no issues at all with connecting through 2 floors and multiple walls - even at 200+ feet away. The configuration guide is severely lacking, but as long as you can get to the internet and download the guide off their website (ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pdf/befw11s4_v2ug.pdf), I would heartily recommend this product. I am using Orinoco gold cards to connect to the router.

Summary: Amazing Product
Review: I bought this wireless router after having a normal Linksys router for several years because the person renting my detached garage apartment wanted to get internet access, but didn't want to install new phone jacks. I was worried that the signal wouldn't reach through 2 exterior walls and about 60 feet, but I installed the card and was immediately able to receive a signal from the apartment. The setup was very easy and now I can take the computer anywhere in the house (or outside) and still be on the net. And the tech support people are very helpful.

Summary: Help Desk Useless and Forget About Using the Phone
Review: Whilst this product revolutionizes the way you access and browse the internet and is great for multiple access points (we have 2 laptops) it falls short in a number of areas.

The primary problem is that that it interferes with all phones - even non wireless fixed lines. For our cordless phone (we are on our 3rd) we have tried the 900mhz, 2.4ghz and the latest 5+ ghz cordless phones. It is hopeless.

Anyway, when it comes down to it I'd prefer to loose the phones rather than my wireless connection so i guess we are stuck!

Summary: Things you need to know before you go wireless...
Review: I upgraded from a Netpassage 15 to this unit when I moved house. The wireless connectivity gave me the freedom over laying new cables I would have to mess with otherwise.

Initially I had lot of performance issues - downloading the new firmware from the Linksys site helped. But the performance would still be inconsistant - very troublesome for family when I was away on business. Anyway Linksys offerd to replace my unit after hearing the issues and gave me a version B. I must say the unit has been operating without trouble from then on.

My advise for people buying this unit (because the unit will ultimately work to specs):
1. Should have basic knowledge of networking. a) start with the book "Networking for Dummies"! b) read the user manual by downloading from the Linksys website. If you are comfortable - go for it.
2. Install the unit closer to the phone line with ADSL modem and the PC most used for faster applications and connect this one with cable instead of wireless. It saves cost of one network adapter and also cable works at 100 MPBS and wireless is at 11MPBS. Use a longer phone cable to the modem if neccessary.
3. For wireless network adapters, preferably buy the WUSB11 over PCMCIA cards. It can also be used equally on PCs or the ocassionally on the laptop for the work you bring home!
4. Try a 'trial' set up to test signal strength is sufficient before you put the nail on the wall...you may need to re-position the units. I was troubled by the steel computer table of one of the PCs - this was impeding the wireless signal - repositioning the adapter to the top of monitor helped.
4. If using ADSL, check out their new combined DSL modem/router unit -saves space.
5. If you lose internet connection, boot up in sequence > Modem > Router > PC. Teach other users this too.
6. Have a 'guru' friend handy - most of the time more useful than online tech support (I dont insinuate on line support is bad quality!)
7. Ocassionally check for new firmwares on the web site. This may fix some stability issues.
8. Change the default SSID settings and activate WEP on the router (wirless encryption protocol) - otherwise your neighbour can use your connection for free - worse he may be hacking a network using your IP address!
9. Finally - if you can do with cables - go for cable base routers - much easier to install, faster, cheaper and stable. My Netpasage 15 router performs flawlessly after four years. But thats not so hep...

Summary: Best investment I ever made
Review: I am still trying to get over how cool it is to be completely wireless in my house, surfing the internet at high speeds via DSL. I can surf anywhere in my home. It appears that signal strength does weaken across the house, but although signal is weaker, internet browsing is unchanged.

The setup was pretty easy. You just run the setup utility and it configures the router for you. I am not doing anything complex - basically have a laptop (wireless) and a pc (connected). To get the laptop implemented in a wireless mode took all of 5 minutes. It was harder to actually install the drivers for my wireless LAN card (non-Linksys product)

Anyway, definitely a great buy for folks who want to the convenience of having no wires cluttering up space and giving you the freedom to browse anywhere in your own home.

Summary: Great Product, Great Price
Review: This router is super easy to install - it literally took me 10 minutes to set my home network up, and it hasn't been down since (two weeks ago). I'll be getting a notebook soon to go along with my 2 desktops, so I havent used the WAP yet, but it's all ready and waiting!! ... this cant be beat - a must-have for any multiple-computer household.

Summary: Linksys, the way to be wire-free!!
Review: I just know enough about the network capabilities of our Dell P4 WinXP and P3 Win98 desktop PCs to be dangerous, but I knew I loved the big pipe DSL connection on my P4 enough to want to share it with my son on the other machine. I bought this unit along with the USB wireless client adapter. The router hook-up was really easy on the P4, and the adapter pretty much the same on his. He's about 25 feet away as the crow flies on the other side of the house, one floor down. I was skeptical, I mean duct work, walls and floors, household appliances, wireless phones, etc. But it works baby. A solid connection at a full 11 Mbps. Good stuff. One little problem when I changed the name of the router from its default (for security reasons) was fixed with one quick call to one of Linksys customer service's bright young lady techs and we were off and running again. When you do that, just make sure you tell the USB adapter that name. Can I get a "Duh" ?!? Buy it, it works.

Summary: Works well, with a little tweaking
Review: I had no problems setting this up to work with Avaya/Lucent/Orinoco 802.11b PC cards in two laptops. I deducted a star for not having encryption turned on, by default (as Microsoft's new products do), nor having any administrative authentication (password) enabled. So don't forget to do these things, esp. if you don't trust your geek neighbors or hacker friends!
