Rating: Summary: Finally, a great, cheap KVM for ordinary people Review: This product has been needed for a while. I've had two complete systems on my desk for almost a year, and it's been a nuisance. But every time I researched KVM switches, I got dismayed by pricing, apparent problems, set up complexity including having to go out and get your own cables (for more money), poor physical design and so on. But Finally IOGear listened to the market, which is probably considerable, and designed just the right product. It comes with its own integral cables; in fact, there's little more to it than cables; it sits behind the computers or on the floor, off the desk and out of the way; installation is as minimal as possible, just shut down the computers, unplug the existing devices and plug the switch's cables in in a totally obvious way; it works great with both systems; it has a (finally!) sensible control-key combination, namely two hits on scroll-lock, a key I haven't used in years, so it will never happen by accident; there's no physical switch, but with a good control-key combination, who needs one, and who wants another box on the desk when the whole idea is to save space. Oh, did I mention that it just works. Well, it does -- mouse, keyboard, and monitor all work perfectly on both systems. And considering the cost of cables, the price is incredible. This should sell tens, if not hundreds of thousands. It simply nails the market niche. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. Now, when is IOGear coming out with their 3- and 4-port models? ;-)
Rating: Summary: simple to install and works Review: This simple gizmo is great. It does what is says it will do. If you are running two computers and want to switch back and forth, without putting two monitors on your desktop get this switch. Return the second monitor, if you can, and save some bucks.
Rating: Summary: This Device is just simply Amazing! Review: This thing is AMAZING! I use a very expensive Belkin Switch box at my office, and was afraid that I was going to have to spend $200+ to get the same functionality at home. Instead, I opted to use a second monitor, keyboard and mouse, thinking this would be much cheaper, and of course, must more inconvenient. However, today I came across the IOGEAR GCS62 switch, and it is EXACTLY what I needed! And all for less than $40.00 (including the cables!) It could not have been simpler to connect. It comes with basic, but perfect instructions. Simply hook up the two sets of attached cables to your 'turned off' 2 PC's mouse, keyboard, and monitor ports, then connect your actual mouse, keyboard and monitor to the center adapter of the GCS62 switch. Then all you need to do is turn on both PC's and There you have it! Both are working Perfectly with NO extra modifications. To switch PC's, all I need to do is press the 'Scroll Lock' key twice, and there you have it, simply switched from one PC to the other. It works great with my HP and my Emachine PC's both running XP, as well as my wireless Logitech keyboard and Wireless optical mouseman with multi-button functioning mouse and fly-wheel on the mouse. You can't do wrong for the money, and the 12 feet of total cable length, allows you to put the two PC's where you want them (I have one my by computer table, and the other is setting in the closet out of the way (sorta a hands-off) machine since I don't need to have the separate mouse, keyboard and monitor hooked up. This is a great time, and space saving machine for the incredible price! Mike ('winterstone')
Rating: Summary: Easy, complete, and great video. Review: Took it out of the blister pack, plugged it in and it worked perfectly from the beginning. No hint that the computers and etc. know there's a difference -- such as the frustrating "mouse hang" that can happen with some KVM's. No problem here. Tried it with different parts of the system turned off or disconnected and still no problems. This is a great tool for a small office setup. This KVM is similar to the Linksys micro-KVM that sells for $8-10 cheaper. Experience with the Linksys is that there can be a little bit of "mouse hang" on the 2nd PC, but more problematic is that it is almost always out of stock.
Rating: Summary: Works on SGIs, too Review: Use this in the office to switch between SGI machines and Intel clones. Works great! Just watch out for triple-hitting the scroll-lock key. If you do, the arrow-keys don't respond, so turn the Scroll Lock back off.
Rating: Summary: Works great Review: Using it with one XP Pro machine, and one dual boot Redhat 8 / Win98SE machine. Have a Philips 109B running at 1280X1024 with no visible distortion. Also using a Microsoft Optical Trackball with it. No problems, easy to install.
Rating: Summary: Good but not perfect Review: Very simple to configure and very good price. Only two minor quibbles the first is that there is a very slight video signal degredation (probably due to the extra lengths of cable) and secondly more a quirk with windows 98 and my matrox video driver in that I can only specify the refesh rate as default or optimal. If set to optimal the card will go to the highest rate the device can support. If I boot with the kvm set to the XP computer the kvm allows 85hz refresh and when I switch to the 98 machine I get an out of range error on the monitor whereas if I boot with the kvm set to the 98 machine it can see the monitors max of 75hz and all is well. Nutshell is I must boot the 98/matrox machine seeing the peripherals, the other XP machine I can set the refresh rate of 75hz on the video adapter so it doesn't try and auto sense and can be booted not seeing the peripherals. Also final note I do have a Microsoft intellimouse and using the included USB to PS/2 adapter works fine with the kvm.
Rating: Summary: A life saver!! Review: WOW... I am impressed, after reading some of the other reviews on the economy KVM switches, I did not know what to expect for the price (when writing reviews, please include detials.. especially if you say it is junk). I was wasting so much time transferring data back and forth between my girlfriend's desktop and my laptop, that it became oppressive. I was concerned about the fact that this switch is PS2 and my laptop only takes USB, plus the keyboard and mouse on the desktop where USB. I used the small USB/PS2 adapter plugs that come with USB Mice for the keyboard and mouse, and a PS2 (2) to USB (1) Keyboard/mouse adapter I had purchase for very little money for the laptop. BOOM... The laptop saw the cheap PS2 (2) to USB (1) keyboard/mouse adapter I added, and the iogear KVM switch fired right up without a flaw, and I could see no difference in the sharpness of the screen from before the switch. I'm using a IBM (USB)scroll mouse and it works just like before, scroll and all. The only issue is my girlfriend runs at 800 x 600 and I run the laptop at 1024 x 768, so when I first hook them up together I change mine down to 800 x 600, just to keep everything simple. Her (white box) desktop runs an Intel Celeron 600Mhz, 512MB RAM, 64MB graphics, and XP Pro. My (Sony PCG-R505EL) laptop runs an Intel P3 (M) 1.12Ghz, 640MB RAM, with 48MB shared graphics, and XP Home. The best $$$ I have spent in awhile, thanks for the well written reviews everyone, you saved me a bundle of cash and headaches... Tony Burt
