Summary: Great Router at a Great Price
Review: After returning a Dlink 614+ that kept dropping my connection every 30 minutes and then finally fried itself when tech support instructed me to upgrade the firmware - I bought this SMC router and a wireless card. The set-up was a piece of cake. The wireless access works flawlessly and the range within my house is far superior to the Dlink 614+. I just saved $70 and couldn't be happier.

Summary: Does not work with Cox Communications Cable Internet
Review: After struggling for hours, and calling tech support, I took this item back to the store where I bought it. The guy at the returns desk told me that it wouldn't work with Cox Communications' Cable Internet service. Gee guys, maybe you should tell your sales people this... Other than that, it seems simple to use IF it works with your system.

Summary: Works good, sofware buggy
Review: For some reason, the software included with the router did not do anything but cause problems with my PC's (Win XP Home and Win 2000 Pro). I think it also depends on the provider (mine OptOnline). Basically in the end I just plugged everything in, and without their software it works great! Great product for a great price.

Summary: Same problem... No resolution...
Review: I had the same problem with this router/Alcatel DSL modem combination. I spent a lot of time configuring the thing: updating the firmware, etc. but it just wouldn't work. It's upsetting to connect my computers to my old (wired) Linksys and have everything go so smoothly, while the same (simple) configuration on the SMC goes nowhere.

SMC Tech Support told me they have had no specific problems with Alcatel modems. I don't know though. I can return my Barricade for a new one, but I don't want to go through another day like the one I just had. I'm going to try to exchange for another product.

Summary: Poor show!
Review: I have always been an ardent supporter of SMC - but this one changed my view. The 11/22 Mbps sounded great - but I could not get this router to work with my Alcatel Speed Touch DSL modem. After hours on the phone with SMC over several days, they suggested that the router must be faulty and I exchanged it for a new one. Same problems. SMC did send me a beta update for the BIOS, but this did not resolve the problem. And now, another 4 weeks later, still no solution from SMC. I regret to say, until they resolve their problems, steer clear of this one!

Summary: Works great! Only User problems.
Review: I have an Accton DSL 1000 modem (MSN DSL 100) modem connected to the WAN port on the router, hard wired(Realtec nic)/wireless connection (SMC PC card) to a laptop running Win XP Home. The DHCP server works great for XP. Just connected everything and set it up and no problems. Connected to a Desktop using a Netgear USB adapter running Win 2k Pro. For some reason DHCP would not work for Win2k Pro, could be my fault. Manually assigned an IP Address, subnet, default gateway, and Primary DNS server. Hint: in my case, I used the DSL modem IP address (192.168.1.1) for my primary DNS, secondary was left blank. Someone had mentioned having problems with the DNS settings.

If you have any issues, check out ... the forums, you can find a lot of useful information.

Summary: Works Great, easy to install SMC Router
Review: I intalled this and it worked right out of the box to my wired computer. It took a little more configuration to get my laptops working with 802.11b WIFI cards, but once I configured everything it works great. I can even use my laptop in the basement, and I have the router 2 floors above basement level on the second floor! There is little [slowness] from the distance between my basement and 2nd floor.

I was having a little trouble getting the encryption to work on my wireless devices, but I think I got it working.

This is tons better than the Netgear and Linksys routers that I have used in the past!

It has 4 ports for wired Ethernet connections, plus their website claims it can support up to 240 some odd wireless devices.

SECRET TIP: You can go to the routers IP address from a computer on your network to configure the router through a handy dandy Web-interface.

Summary: SMC2404WBR will work with Alcatel modems
Review: I read some of the reviews stating that this router wont work with Alcatel modems, but i decided to buy it anyways knowing I have an Alcatel modem myself (Alcatel 1000ADSL). In the begining It didn't work, so I called tech support, they guided me through the "Advanced Process" and I was able to get my router to work with my Alcatel Modem.

Summary: Won't work with Alcatel Modems
Review: I'm glad to see that others are having the same INSANE problems trying this router to connect through the Alcatel modems on DSL connections. This router has taken years off my life.
