Summary: Worked out of the box.
Review: I bought this to use at my work. We have 5 laptops of 4 different brands using it. It worked for everyone right out of the box. We all get a good signal even through two walls and rooms full of lab equipment.

Summary: Range & bandwidth OK, configuration poor
Review: I decided to give the D-Link wireless system a try because of its price & their claim to double standard 802.11b bandwidth (22Mbps instead of 11). Having used Linksys products before, I expected a similar level of ease in installation.

Wrong!

Physical setup is, of course, simple: unpack, plug it in, connect the cables. The difficulty comes in configuring WAP itself. D-Link's claims of ease-of-configuration apparently only apply if you are using D-Link wired network components (router); in that case, the WAP auto-configures and you're up and running in no time. Not the case if you're adding this to an existing network populated with other manufacturers' hardware. The most confusing and frustrating portion of setup is that you must re-assign a static IP address to a machine on your network so you can "see" the WAP on the network, then change the IP configuration for the WAP, then change the machine you used back to its original setting. The documentation makes this LESS than clear, and the actual steps for doing this are not emphasized or clarified in the "quick" installation guide. In fact, the first time around I munged things up so badly that I had to do a hard-reset on both the WAP *and* my router . . . yeah, "quick" installation.

Ultimately, though, I did get it to work, and once it was up and running it did produce nice results. Through encryption and signal boost (so I understand), it really does provide up to 22Mbps bandwidth. Not that I'll ever saturate that, but it's there if I need it.

So, I don't recommend against it, but I don't recommend it, either. If I had it to do over again, I would probably go with the Linksys WAP. It doesn't boast the higher bandwidth, but they're a company that knows how to write good documentation and make configuration a bit more intuitive.

Summary: Easy, fast setup
Review: I did a lot of research on a number of wireless access points and routers but I finally decided that the D-Link DWL-900AP+ would be the right one for me. One of the deciding factors is the 256-bit encryption option, the highest I could find available. From the time that I got the box home to the time that I was walking around my entire house surfing the internet on my laptop took a whole 15 minutes. And I didn't have a single glitch along the way.

Granted, I've been running a wired network in my home for a few years and most of the concepts were not new to me. However, I believe that the installation manual is good enough to get even a networking newbie on the wireless net in no time. The trick is to fully read all of the directions before doing ANYTHING and then read them again as you start the setup process. The one area where the instructions were somewhat lacking was in the advanced setup area such as the MAC address filtering and the encrytion key. I think a newbie might have a little bit of trouble getting these setup. I reccommend the excellent articles and tutorials on 80211-planet.com to help you understand the terminology and concepts before you start changing settings.

I used the DWL-650+ wireless network adapter from D-Link in my laptop and after inputting the encryption key it worked immediately.

I've never had any problems with any networking hardware from D-Link. The quality of their products continue to impress me, especially given their relatively low price. I've also used Netgear, 3Com and Intel and had minor to major problems with all three.

Summary: Worked for five days...
Review: I did a lot of research on wireless access points, and this one was very highly rated. It was easy to install and fairly easy to configure using D-Link's web based interface. Unfortunately, the device only worked well for five days.

Then I upgraded the firmware - and things went downhill. The signal strength became very inconsistent: Excellent one moment, fair the next, then poor, etc. It was all over the map - even when the wireless client remained stationary.

I spent hours trying to fix it. D-Link's telephone tech support people were not particularly helpful. It sounded like they didn't know one product from another. Email tech support merely regurgitated what is posted on the website.

I finally gave up, decided to return it, and bought a Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router. It is less expensive, easier to configure, performs more consistently, and does the job of both a router and wireless access point - so I've now got one less device to manage.

The D-Link may work for you. But if it doesn't, my advice is not to waste a lot of time trying to fix it.

Summary: Great for Expanding your Network to Wireless
Review: I have this plugged into my DI-604 (DSL router/firewall with 4-ports) to enable wireless capabilities on my network. I have a wireless card in my laptop and I get great range from this AP. I can roam all around my apartment and even one room in my neighbors place. Fortunately though I can filter out all other MAC addresses besides the ones on my LAN so that no body else can join my LAN without my permission. Not to mention 256-bit WEP encryption.

I get an average of 5Mbps speeds when transferring files, which obviously doesn't affect my Internet browsing at all.

I am very pleased with the performance, security features, and price. I'd recommend this to everyone who is looking for a fast, secure, and reliable access point.

Summary: Used as a Repeater to Extend Wireless Coverage
Review: I have this setup in my hallway right next to my thermostat mounted and it blends well with pictures and thermostats. I have it setup as a repeater which repeats the signal of my DI-614+ (D-Link) that is on the other side of the house. And because there is so many walls from the one side of the house to my bedroom this repeater makes sure I don't drop signal when on my laptop in my bedroom. This was very easy to setup in repeater mode and doesn't need any further configuring once configured and placed where you want it. I've never had to reboot, touch, or re-configure this since the first day I bought it. Although I have upgraded firmware over a wireless connection like D-Link recommends not to do, but so far I guess I've been lucky.

Overall I am very pleased and know this is a purchase well worth it's price.

Summary: I am very satisfied with this product
Review: I have this system up and running for two weeks and I am very pleased with it. The quick start quite was very easy to follow
and there was no need to call tech support.
The range is excellent and I have not lost connection so far.
I will recommend this product to anyone.

Summary: Installation a little confusing, until I read the Manual
Review: I have to admit I got a little flustered when I saw all the settings that can be changed and manipulated. Fortunately I was able to figure out a basic rule (by reading the manual and common sense) that since everything works "out of the box" (default settings will ensure connection) if I modified any settings on this access point I would need to modify them on my wireless network card also (where applicable).
I know this might seem like a novice thing to think of, but after I realized this it was all smooth sailing from then on.

I hope this is helpful to anyone who is having trouble or has any worries about buying something of this nature. As a general rule I'd say just read the manual and you should be fine. Make it work with default settings, then mess around with everything else.

As far as performance goes I get a solid link quality in every room in my house (2 stories). I like the security features, because I don't want my neighbors hording in on my Internet connection.

Recommended to all those who think they can and even those who don't.

Summary: Misled
Review: I have to return mine because they tout their 5 operating mode but never mentioned anywhere in their manual or sales literature about the following that appears on their website.

When the DWL-900AP+ is set to Client or Repeater mode, it can connect to the following products:
DWL-800AP+
DWL-900AP+
DWL-1000AP+
DI-614+
DI-764
DI-754 (with DWL-650+ adapter)
DI-714P+

It will not connect to the following:
DWL-900AP
DWL-6000AP
DI-711
DI-713
DI-713P
DI-714

Note: We do not support connectivity to non D-Link products. Bridging, Client, and Repeater modes are not part of the Wi-Fi Certification.
