Rating: Summary: Works just fine ... Review: just make sure you enter the LAN MAC address of the AP you are repeating. This is the key that got me stuck for about 5 minutes. I figured it out finally and everything from then on was a snap. I am impressed with the rnage this adds. I have wireless access in 2 more rooms of my house that were completely dead and one room that only had low signal has a good signal strength now. It isn't that hard to do, just read the instructions.
Rating: Summary: Great gadget with lousy documentation Review: Just to add to the comments here, which are very useful and key to my eventually getting this gizmo to work, I have this set up as part of my network with a D-Link DI-713P (which D-Link does not officially support) and an Apple iBook (also unsupported). While it took me a while to tinker with it at first, it's an invisible part of my network, eradicates the deadspots that used to vex us, and has been unnoticed by the rest of my family. It supports WEP, but not WAP, so it's not as cutting edge as it could be.
Rating: Summary: Works, once you get the right MAC address Review: My experience closely parallels the other reveiwers. I got stuck following the quick start guide. I used the WAN MAC address of my DLink 614+ router, not the LAN MAC address like I was suppose to. A call to tech service got me set up, but the funny thing is there no immediate indication that the DWL-800AP+ is working, other than the improved signal strength at the receiving computer. The front lights on the DWL-800AP+ looked exactly the same when I had it incorrectly configured as when it was properly set up. It took another call to tech support to reassure me that, yes, it was working. Also interesting is that you don't sacrifice any speed when using a repeater (like the DWL-800AP+). I had considered getting a bigger antenna for the router, but I think made the better choice by going with the repeater. It does what I wanted. I'm typing this in my kitchen which was previously a dead spot. It's a good choice if you are matching it to other Dlink equipment.
Rating: Summary: Inexpensive solution to problem Review: My need for this device was to extend signal strength in my new home. I recently moved from California where houses are basically wood framed, to a new, larger home in Florida where houses use blocks for outside and load bearing walls. This heavier construction, combined with the distance between my wireless router and where I use my computer, severely degraded my signal and throughput. I purchased this device to rectify that problem - which it did. Installation, including putting it in wireless range extender mode, took mere minutes after unpacking it. I was communicating with an incredible 100% signal strength in practically no time after setting it up, which was a dramatic difference from the 20% strength before it was installed. I did an experiment by walking outside with my laptop and was still connected to my home network with 80% or better signal all the way to the end of my property. I like the fact that this device seems to interoperate flawlessly with other vendor products. One of my systems has an SMC wireless card, and another uses a Linksys. My wireless router is an SMC. Installation instructions were a bit sparse. I am a highly technical user, so I didn't need them, but a novice may have problems. Since I have not needed to use technical support I cannot comment on the quality of D-Link's support. Since I have not used this device as an access point I also cannot comment on how well it works in that mode. However, if you are seeking a simple and cost-effective solution to extending the range of your existing wireless LAN, and have some technical skills this may be the solution you are looking for. Even though I am pleased with this product I rated it at four stars because I have not used all of the features or D-Link's technical support, and do not think the documentation is novice-friendly.
Rating: Summary: range extender feature works great Review: purchased this item for use with d-link 614+ router as a range extender. works great. now can get highest signal for wireless ethernet surfing in all rooms of my 2 story house. reminder to people who can not get this extender to work, make sure you remove or turn your wireless card offon the computer directly connected to the 800ap and type in the IPaddress stated on the manual. once connected and configured the800ap, insert or turn on wireless card and you are ready to go.
Rating: Summary: THIS ONLY WORKS WITH D-LINK PRODUCTS! Review: Read this review if you are trying to use this with a NON-DLINK router: I bought this product as a range extender for my awesome LinkSys BEFW11S4 wireless router, but it did not work. I later learned from D-LINK Tech support that it does not support other routers because the mechanism they use to perform the "signal repeating" is proprietary to D-LINK products! I'm sure it would have worked great. It was relatively easy to configure. I had to plug it directly into one of my PC's, change the IP address so that it would be in the same range (192.168.0.1-255), then enter the WAN MAC address of my router (gotten from the LinkSys Administration tool), plug it back into my LinkSys Router, then return my IP address to its original setting and THEN ONLY was I able to see th DLINK on my network. Unfortunately, that didn't much matter because of the D-LINK proprietary "technology" to do the signal repeating...Oh well!
Rating: Summary: Repeater mode doesn't work, support is garbage Review: The repeater mode fails to connect after one day and requires resetting. Technical support gave me the runaround, making many suggestions that did not apply to the problem. It took three telephone calls to obtain an RMA. I will NEVER EVER EVER buy a D-Link product for the REST OF MY LIFE!! Garbage. Don't buy. They are morons, and their 800AP+ is a peice of garbage.
Rating: Summary: Works Just as Advertised Review: The title says "Wireless Range Extender" and that's what it does. It repeats the signal of another compatible access point from D-Link. I have a DWL-900AP+ and it repeates the signal of that quite well. I was able to increase my range to cover my pool area outside. I can now be anywhere in my backyard and get a good 3-4Mbps wireless speeds. It can also be a regular access point. And in repeater mode this is easily setup and once you have it configured like the documentation says you are all set. Just put it at about the point where your signal drops out and plug it in. It is smaller than you'd think and it works quite well. The DWL-810+ is something that you can plug into your PS2, XBOX, or what have you and it will "bridge" that connection. This is a DWL-800AP+ and it can be an Access Point or a Wireless Repeater (a.k.a. Range Extender).
Rating: Summary: What a Great Compact Access Point - Very Mobile Review: This AP has worked flawlessly since I bought it. I can virtually plug it into any ethernet jack and provide wireless access to whatever network that cable is connected to. I've used this for school rooms, hotspots, friends' homes, at work, and anywhere else I can find an ethernet cable and a power socket. After configuring it correctly, I can connect to it with my laptop and be able to roam around, or not have people trip over the cable, etc. 128-bit WEP and MAC filters is all I need to keep others out. This also looks good painted a different color. I painted mine all black as to look extra incognito.
Rating: Summary: Imcompatible with Dlink DI-713P in repeater mode Review: This DWL-800AP+ is a good idea: AP and repeater in one unit. The price is great. But check AP compatibility before you buy if you intent to use it in repeater mode. I found out the hard way that it does NOT work with many Dlink APs. For example, it does not work with my new Dlink DI-713P. However, it works with my older 1000AP. Dlink pre-sale support gave me the wrong info that it works with DI-713P. Dlink after-sale tech support spent 30 min. to discover the compatibility problem. I feel like I am beta testing products for Dlink.
