Rating: Summary: Fantastic product Review: I got this and the Linksys Etherfast Router/Switch. Plugging this into the back of the router, I was up and running wireless in next to no time. You have to be a little careful to make sure you all the machines set up the same way, but once you have that set, you're good-to-go.This box is HIGHLY sensitive to positioning. If I put it in one location, I get poor reception in my back room. Move it 18 inches and reorient it, and I get fine reception everyplace. My only real complaint is that it could use a bit more power to penetrate walls in a house, but that might put it out of the FCC specs. It's definitely better in a line-of-sight environment, but it does a good job when properly set up in an general purpose indoors environment. Note, I haven't had to try Linksys's famous (or infamous) customer support.....
Rating: Summary: Bummed in Boston Review: I have been a Linksys fan, with reservations, up until now. I have two LANs running (home and office) using the Linksys 4 port cable/dsl routers (one with cable, the other dsl). They work well and are reliable. My major reservation is with the documentation which leaves a lot to be desired. I did not need technical support with either. One of my routers was doa which took a while to figure out, however once I figured out it was defective and got a replacement it worked fine. Now onto the WAP. I have the WAP connected to a Linksys router. Beside the WAP I have a notebook computer with a Linksys wireless network adapter. I can't get them to work. The documentation is horrible. The advice on troubleshooting is pitifully bad. And I have yet to hear back from tech support who we called two days ago (they promised a call back within 2-3 hours). I can't get through again due to constant busy signal. I have sent an email message and have yet to hear back on that. Clearly I cannot recommend this product. If I ever get any help from them or get the stuff working I will provide an update.
Rating: Summary: Free at last ! Review: This is the third Linksys product I've purchased, and I've been very pleased with all of them (KVM switch, 4-port DSL router, and this WAP-11). I'm now able to browse the internet from any room in my house or even outside in my yard or porch using my notebook (Windows 2000 Pro) connecting to my home network. I use my main desktop PC's modem connection in ICS (internet connection sharing) mode; and, no, I don't have DSL yet but I got the router port when I do. The only problem I had was unrelated to Linksys product - it was getting Internet connection sharing on Windows 2000 Pro to work reliably with ZoneAlarm Pro personal firewall software. Remember also if you use ICS you'll need to reconfig Linksys stuff to use sub-net 192.168.0.x instead of the 192.168.1.x to which linksys stuff defaults. The product is GREAT. You won't be disappointed. SERENITY NOW and Happy Festivus to you!
Rating: Summary: Review of Linksys Wireless Access Point Review: The wireless access point is an outstanding product. Previously I had tried Home Phoneline products, but did not have good success. In fact, I returned the Intel Anypoint Home Phoneline cards because they were not reliable on my phone wiring. I would not recommend phoneline networking unless your computers are fairly close together (rooms next to each other). The Linksys wireless access point is proving very reliable and was a breeze to setup. I am experiencing excellent wireless transfer rates for internet access (I have DSL and the pages load in a flash), Streaming media works great too. I was worried that I might experience interference from my 2.4 GHz cordless phone, but I have had no problems, even when talking on the cordless phone while I surf the net. My access point is on opposite ends (ground floor) of the house from the desktop PC I have the wireless card in (second floor). It does help to elevate the wireless access point to improve the signal strength within the wireless network area, although mine simply sits on the desk with the downstairs PC. As an added note, our house is old with very thick plaster walls and ceilings, but the signal gets around fine throughout the 3500 sq ft. My wireless access point is connected to the Linksys DSL/Cable router (4 hub model). The combination makes a very reliable network. If you are looking for a wireless network product, I strongly recommend trying this one.
Rating: Summary: Works Great! Review: I'll agree that Linksys' customer service is not the best that I've ever dealt with, but my experience was not as bad as those related by other reviewers, but the product works. With little set-up, the product is now up and working (along with the Linksys router) and I am fully networked through my cable modem. Nice price/performance tradeoff - highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Worst Customer Service EVER Review: I purchased one of this company's products and I have NEVER encountered worse customer service. The 800 number rings and rings and when it finally answers you are on hold forever. When you finally get through to the tech support department, there is an operator who takes a message under the guise that someone will actually return the call. When someone finally called me back (after I repeatedly called them to check the status of the callback), the person could not have been in a bigger hurry to get me off the line. When I followed his instructions, my computer locked up and then he said he could'nt wait for me to fix my computer so he hung up. He actually hung up on me! I could'nt believe it. When I called this company to find out the name of the President, the person answering the phone was reluctant to provide it. When I asked for the President's e-mail address and address so that I could send a letter, this person refused to provide it and also hung up on me. If you are stupid enough to purchase this product after my experiences, all I can say is that you better know what the hell you are doing because Linksys certainly will not help you.
Rating: Summary: Just plain WOW! Review: You definitely can't beat the price on this unit. It's completely 802.11b compatible. So, just drop an access point on your lan and the rest is engineering magic. I purchased the access point along with a wireless ethernet pc card for my laptop. It couldn't have been easier to set up. Now I'm reading my email no matter where I am in the house.
Rating: Summary: Generally buggy - a popular choice for no good reason Review: I can't stress how much stress this device has caused. It seems that it's going to do the job properly and then insidious problems creep in that get worse and worse until everything goes horribly wrong.
Terrible support and worse companion products mean that this access point will cost you more in sweat and tears than any other piece of electronics you may own - and it's unlikely to get better due to this area of gadgetry 'moving on' to new faster standards.
Advice is - if you want to stick to cheap and cheerfull 802.11b hardware - avoid linksys kit like the plague and keep doing your research to find a good alternative.
Rating: Summary: Waste of time and money Review: Although the unit indicated it had power and was linked to the network the set-up software could not find it. I will have spent $16 and hours of frustration by the time I ship it back. Tech support was useless.
Rating: Summary: No More Linksys Review: In years before Cisco purchased Linksys, I was a loyal customer. Since then things have changed. Poor quality (I too have gone through 2 WAP-11's in less than four years), Poor support: Long hold times, out-sourced to another country and a seeming lack of focus on model design and direction (have a look at the number of WAP-11 firmware revs's and sub models and lack of firmware upgrade paths)
I'm all done. I'll be over at Netgear.
