Summary: First one Died after 13 months, Second one has problems
Review: I could kick myself for buying another one. The first one just quit after 13 months. The second one has been nothing but trouble. The node locks up every 2 days. I use to always get 11mb/sec. With the new one I get either 1 or 2 Mb/sec. I downloaded new firmware to the device. No improvement.

Summary: Great Product, Horrible Instructions
Review: This wireless access point, once installed and setup, works perfectly. Since day one, I have had no problems with it. The signal remains strong throughout my condo, and even when the indicator on my laptop states that I have a weak signal, I seem to be connecting and "linking" just fine.

Setting the access point up was not "fun and easy," as the instructions would have you think. In fact, I found the instructions to be cryptic and confusing (I'm not a rocket scientist, but I am a lawyer so it shouldn't have been that difficult). In fact, I also purchased the Lynksys PCMCIA Card. Both came with the same set-up disk, but the Card came with an older version of instructions. Together, I was able to figure out (eventually) how to get "linked."

So, where do I finally stand on this product -- Five Stars, but ONLY after you get it set-up...

Summary: All home electronics products should be this easy to use !
Review: I opened the box, carefully laid the manual aside, plugged it in, and it worked flawlessly. I *still* haven't cracked open the manual. Home network includes a Mac running OS9, a Win2000 box and an XP box. A month-and-a-half later, still no issues to report, it works as advertised.

Summary: WAP11 is a Useless Piece of Junk
Review: I've been in the technical end of the computing business for over 20 years - done a lot of networking - thought it would be nice to add wireless capability to my home network, so purchased the WAP11 & WPC11 (the pcmcia wireless card that goes with it.) Software installed ok & got it to work. The problem is that the WAP11 has no useful range. As long as you are located in the same room and have "line of sight" with the WAP11, it's ok. If you go out of the room, or any way get out of the line of sight, even the next room, the signal quality goes to poor and the link drops. I have regular, normal wood and sheet rock walls. Packing mine back up for returning...doesn't work as advertised. Very dissapointing.

Summary: WAP11 works for me!
Review: I just picked up the WAP11 from Amazon the other day. It works beautifully, but only after mucking with the settings for a while. I have a Cisco Aironet350 card hooking up to the AP, and it worked perfectly once I disabled WEP on the Cisco card. Once I got a link, I then went and reconfigured WEP on both the AP and the card, and it works lke a snap! Lose 1 star for requiring USB to configure and update (it should ship with the newest firmware IMHO). Once the update is installed, 128-bit WEP works fine.

For what it is worth, I am a networking engineer, so I already knew what needed to be done to make this work. I agree that the instructions are crap. I suggest that those of you who are having issues to do the following: 1. Ensure that you have a good card in your laptop (Cisco or Lucent seem to be the best right now). I have seen the horror of the Linksys card! 2.Begin with disabling all WEP,and making the SSID/ESSID the same on both cards. Once that works, you can probably get the WEP to work!

All in all a very agressively priced access point. I recommend it to those who don't mind putting a little time into configuring it up.

Good Luck!

Summary: Works, setup easy, but power cycle often needed
Review: I have one, set up in Wep 128, access by various devices (DLink DWL 120, DWL 500, DCF 650W). Setup is pretty easy using the USB interface and the provided software (including firmware updates..). I get about 500KBytes/s bandwith with strong signal.
Cons:
- it doesn't seem to work more than 24h... Either the network stops working, or it becomes slow (e.g. 35KBytes/s). Power cycle and it works again.

Summary: at least it looks nice
Review: I am very dissapointed with MY WAP11. The manual does not realy give any procedures for setting up the unit. Tech support, what a joke. My first call to tech support a guy answered the phone and took my number, and promised a return call...it's been 4 days so far no call. I called back and after 8 minutes on hold, I was cut off. When I finally got a support person, he seemed very put out to talk to me - even yawned once. Sounded like he thought I was an idiot. No real progress on my problem.. I have to shut down the unit every few times i use it.. the range on the unit is about 25 feet so far...
good luck & save your recipt.

Summary: Pro's and Con's
Review: You'd be hard pressed to find a WAP with as many features as this for such a reasonable price...

To me, the most important feature of the WAP11 was that it had removable antennas. This will allow for the clean and easy connection of higher gain antennas. With I high gain antenna, one can potentially get a range of several *miles*, providing that there is a reasonable line of sight between the WAP and the client.

Unforunatley, the value of this model didn't come without a considerable amount of trouble... I had to go through 3 of these before I ended up with a properly working model.

WAP11 #1: Worked perfectly fine for about 2 days, and then I was no longer able to link up with it. Linksys' technical support was unable to find a fix, and suggested that my network card was to blame... after exchanging my origional, off brand card for a new one from a different and more reputable mfg. (which was also a bit more expensive), the problem was still not resolved, so I returned the WAP.

WAP11 #2: Had exactly the same problem as WAP #1, only it didn't work from the moment I took it out of the box. I Called Linksys yet again. The agent that I spoke to insisted that my (new) network card must be faulty. After testing my network card with a friend's non-Linksys (Dlink) WAP, and finding that it worked perfectly fine, I concluded that WAP11 #2 was also bad... I returned it.

WAP11 #3: Finally! After 4 trips to Best Buy - A WAP11 that worked! Well, it worked perfectly fine for about 2 or 3 days... after this, if I were to have my computer unconnected to the WAP11 for more than about 2 hours (i.e., everyday when I'd take my laptop to work...), I would not be able to link back up with the WAP11 without power-cycling it. I called Linksys (again). They were no help. I was told that, "since power-cycling the WAP11 seemed to fix my problem, to just power-cycle the WAP11 when I had the problem"... Nevermind that this is not how the WAP11 is supposed to function, nor that anyone should have to put up with this sort of hassle just to use their equipment as they should be able to, I hit the internet in search of help...

In the end, I found out that the SMC 2655W WAP is actually one and the same internally as the Linksys WAP11. The important difference being that SMC had a MUCH, MUCH newer firmware update avail. on their site than Linksys did. After flashing the WAP11 with the firmware obtained from SMC, I had no further problems. The WAP11 forks flawlessly now and with that, I am very satisfied with it... Even so, due to the incompitent technial support I received from Linksys, and the sheer amount of hassle associated with actually *getting* the WAP11 to work as it should, I have to give this product a 2... were it not for all that, I'd easilly give it a 5.

Summary: East setup.
Review: This wireless adapter was very easy to setup. It was literally taken out of the box, setup, drivers installed, and running in ten minutes. Very easy!

BUT had I known there was this type of adapter with a router built in.....well I would have saved myself a bundle of money. (80 dollars). But the rep at Best Buy obviously had no clue what he was talking about, and I live 2 hours away from it...so the 80 bucks would be spent in gas money and time...which is not worth it.

So if you are looking for a wireless setup with a router go with the "BEFW11S4" other wise this will work fine for your needs.

Summary: Not as great as I thought
Review: I reviewed this product before, and had nothing but mostly glowing things to say. Unfortunately, time has not been as kind. When it works, it works great. Unfortunately, there have been a serious of problems with this box. Periodically it will just go offline. The remote cards claim to be able to connect, but no traffic goes through. Power-cycling the box is necessary. To be fair, this appears to be related to the version of the hardware, and the version of the firmware. My problems started when I "upgraded" to a new firmware drop. A later drop mitigated many of the problems, but I'm still left with the infrequent hang. There's at least one newer firmware drop that I haven't tried, but frankly, these interim drops should never have been released.
