Rating: Summary: Amazon.com's going downhill! Review: The -4GS is a piece of cake to set up. Running the primary computer on XP, it's promptly recognized and instantly connects to the web. Setting up the wireless on a Mac PB G4 didn't go as smoothly, but, within 10 minutes it too was up and running. I was surprised by the speed of internet connection working wireless on the Mac. The 4GS boasts speed with its SpeedBooster--and it's indeed valid. Regarding Amazon.com. I've purchased about a $1000 worth of gear over the past 6 weeks. Amazon used to be quite true to its words as far as availability for shipment. Not anymore! If the item states "available for shipping in 24 hours," that translates to 2-weeks (average). This has caused me, and others, to cancel their orders. Tools used to be an item Amazon promptly shipped. Dependable, in other words. Again, not anymore. I received the -4GS in 8 working days. It's listed as "available for shipping in 24 hours." Amazon: better get your act together because your misleading advertising is backfiring.
Rating: Summary: Poor Customer Service Review: The Linksys customer service rep didn't speak English well (an understatement). Sounded like he was from India: why did he ask me for my cashew over and over? (case number?) The whole conversation was a garbled mess. I couldn't tell if knew a router from a VW bug. It was a real pain dealing with them.
Rating: Summary: Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router Review: The Wireless- G router by Linksys is an ideal machine I have one myself. I also purchased a wireless-G PCI card from Motorola. I am a student at Michigan State University but I purchased these items the summer before my freshman year. The reason I decided to purchase this product was so I could have my computer anywhere in my dorm room and not be limited to ten feet around the internet jack and also so if later I had purchased a lab top computer I could be on the internet anywhere in my room. Since I had purchased this product I have not been able to get it to work here up at State but I was able to make it work at home. I have called Motorola and Linksys about this problem but they blame each other for the error. The product works awesome when it is operational but up at school it just collects dust on the shelve. But it is definitely a must buy for the owner of multiple computers.
Rating: Summary: Great for Mac Powerbook Review: This product simply works great on my Powerbook. If you want it working on your Mac, follow these instructions. If you have a Airport card on your Mac, you need to remove it before preceding (refer to your Apple owners manual). Install your new Linksys network card into the external card slot and power up your Mac. OS X will configure the new network card as Airport card (how easy is that!). Varify by clicking on the wireless icon at the top of the apple menu bar (Apple should have check mark and not Linksys). Turn off your modem and connect the ethernet cable from the modem to the Linksys router. Power up the modem and router. Open configuration page using the web browser per Linksys instructions. Leave it on auto configuration DHCP with no changes except your password. Save and exit. Power off both the modem and the router. Power on the modem first and than the router, it may take the router few minutes to configure itself. Happy surfing!
Rating: Summary: very dependable, easy to set up Review: This router has served me well for nearly a year now. It is easy to set up and has pretty good wireless security. This is my second Linksys router, and I really can't see myself ever buying another brand. I've used their KVM switch, and an 8 port switch and they all have worked very well.
Rating: Summary: Nice! Review: This router is basically the WRT54G, with the addition of Linksys' Speedbooster technology. It can service all 802.11g, as well as the older 802.11b, based networks. Or it can serve a network consisting of a mixture of those two standards. In short, this is a very versatile router to have.
The Speedbooster technology provides an additional increase in network speed over the typical 54mbs of the 802.11g standard. This is very useful if you like to transfer large files between your computers. The extra speed should help things move along just a little quicker. But keep in mind that this will probably not give you any additional increase over the internet. Probably because the wireless connection between the router and your computer is not the bottleneck. The Speedbooster capability can only be fully utilized if your operating system is either Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
Setting up this router was easy. My PCI wireless desktop adapter is also made by linksys. The ethernet card on my older computer is a standard issue IBM.
I highly recommend this wireless router to anyone who frequently transfers large files from one computer to another. I have had the router in operation for over a week, and so far, it has not dropped my internet connection.
For your information, my current network consists of two desktop computers (Dell 8200 and an IBM 300PL). The Dell is connected wirelessly, using a Linksys wireless adapter with the Speedbooster capability. The IBM has the original IBM network card. Speedstream DSL modem. The Dell is running on Windows XP Pro and the IBM has Windows 2000 Server.
Rating: Summary: Not compatible with xbox live! Review: This router is good in terms of speed. But it is not compatible with xbox live. I was working with this thing for two days spending hours with the technical support, and wondering why it wouldn't work. It's plain and simple if you want to play xbox live only get a router that has the xbox compatible logo on the box. Trust me you will save hours of endless frustration.
Rating: Summary: Seems good to me Review: This thing seems like a decent piece of equipment. The setup was easy and it worked without a problem. One MINOR annoyance, you can change the internal IP address of this thing to 192.168.XXX.XXX but the DHCP server will only hand out IPs in the range of 192.168.1.XXX. No real biggie, just personally annoying.
Rating: Summary: Linksys gone wild!!! Review: This wireless router simply ROCKS!!! It smokes my old Linksys router by 20-30% depending on the mode you use. Works excellent in a mixed mode enviorment with different brand clients. Signal output is easily a 25% increase over my old Linksys wireless 802.11b router. Has all kinds of extras in the interface such as parental control and my favorite is the ability to have on and off times for different clients. Can't wait to use this with a speedbooster enabled clientcard because even now with a Linksys PCI-802.11G (non-speedbooster) card I get 30+Mbps throughput. Remember when a box or standard says 54Mbs that is its bandwidth not its throughput. Throughput is usually 50% of bandwidth so this Linksys is the first wireless device I've ever seen excced the 50% rule! Linksys/Cisco you simply ROCK!!!iNetMANN and your not...
Rating: Summary: Great g card but Customer Services drops the ball Review: Well, I purchased my card (WPC54GS) and the router to match (WRT54GS) last Sunday for my work computer and after a week I finally got it to work no thanks to customer service at Linksys. There only help was to tell me the card was broken and I had to reinstall my operating system after 4 hours on the phone with them trying the same thing over and over again. But I'm sure that if you have windows XP or 2000 you wont have any problems but, my company gave me a great laptop but with windows 98SE which for those of you who have moved on to XP as I did with my home PC remember what a piece it was. If any of you purchase this card with 98SE and get stuck you can e-mail me at GEO1277@comcast.net and I can help you get it up and running. But as far as the product goes it gets great reception and as long as one of the antennas is pointed in the direction you are using the laptop or pc you can go through 3 well built floors and at least 100ft that I know of from my experience. Oh one more down side to this card if you have Windows 98SE you can't use the SpeedBooster unless you are using XP or 2000 just some info that I think was left out on this website but will be on the box when you get the card or router. I would give the Router 5 stars the Card 4 Stars and the customer service negative 5 stars.
