Rating: Summary: Linksys Wireless V2 is shipping! Review: I just received my router today and I just wanted to confirm that it is the V2 model which is shipping. I had the same concern as many other buyers. I also got the message back from Amazon.com sales that if you for some reason DON'T get the V2 of the wireless router, you can call Linksys Sales and mention you bought the router from Amazon.com, and they will replace it free of charge. I bought the router together with the nr.1 PC Card Orinoco Gold PC Card and plan to setup a safe LAN at home with * Changed SSID (not linksys, duh!) * 128 bit encryption enabled * SSID broadcast OFF * MAC address enabled for my hosts onlyThis should be safe enough for me. Rating: Summary: Happy Wireless User Review: I bought this Router because of its popularity. Installing it was quite easy. At first the response was very very poor when I put the router right next to the cable modem on top of the PC. After I put it on the floor, the response time is very good. I am still not sure if it is the PC or the cable modem that causes the problem. The help section however doesn't tell you about things like this. Since many people have spoken negatively about the wireless LinkSys PC card for the laptop, I have decided to buy the one from Netgear. It installs easily with no problem on my Windows 2000 laptop. It works very well too. When I tested the speed, it exceeds the cable modem published rate, amazing. My laptop usually sits downstairs while the router sits upstairs with my desktop. It's true that the signal varies depending on where you use the laptop. I am a happy WIRELESS camper. With rebate and everything, it only costs me ... I got the whole package from Amazon in less than 5 days.
Rating: Summary: Works great, but configuring for AOL is a pain Review: I have an AOL broadband connection at home. Configuring this router to work with AOL broadband was tough!! After connecting the router and following the steps mentioned in the manual, AOL could not detect the DSL modem.Had to call up the technical support and found that i needed to download and install the firmware version 1.43 (the one already installed was 1.42.7, and 1.43 has added support for AOL Broadband). Did that, but still the same problem! Then called up tech. support again...that guy couldnt handle the problem and directed me to AOL support. Thankfully, the AOL tech. support guys are pretty competent ( and they must've got hundreds of similar calls before!) and now i am on my way. The router works great, just the initial part of configuring it was messy. And i also bought the linksys wireless card. That was real easy to install, no problem at all with that. You can password protect your network so that there can be no intruders and there are some other advanced security features as well. So, overall a great router.
Rating: Summary: Mine has died Review: Got the original BEFW11S4 in July 2001 from Amazon.com. It had a weak range, but worked well until recently (Nov.2002). In order to use XP's Remote Desktop feature, I had to turn on Port Forwarding. This caused the wireless part of the router to fail, although naturally it took quite a while for me to figure out what happened. I'm not the only one this has happened to... Six emails to tech support (in the Phillipines) before they admitted it was broken. Have to buy a new one. Not Linksys...
Rating: Summary: So far so good.... Review: I purchased this product...about 3 weeks ago and have had no problems. I am not a network expert, but I found the setup fairly straight forward; connected the router to my DirectTV DSL gateway, connected my desktop to one of the router's ports and connected my laptop wirelessly with no problems. I must say I'm pretty happy with this product so far.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Smooth Working Review: I have installed many of these units in homes, and have only had a couple of problems. Which we were able to quickly figure out, and after changing the channel it was smooth sailing. Recomend this product to anyone interested in hooking up a wireless network in the office, or just for home. Unbeatable price powerfull features
Rating: Summary: EASY Setup! Review: I bought this and paid (Money) from a local store about 18 months ago. I took it home along with a PCMCIA card for my laptop. With the aid of the quickstart card, I was up and running in 10 minutes flat! I had never messed with 802.11b before. Additionally, Linksys support has been outstanding compared to other tech companies. They had the wrong Firmware update on their site and I downloaded it and tried to install it and it fried my router. I called them and was actually able to speak to a person! They kept escalating my call to higher levels of tech cupport and was able to reverse the effects of the damaging incorrect firmware. Kudos to Linksys!
Rating: Summary: Support bad; no firmware upgrades Review: It is not clear if this is a v1 or v2 system. The v1 has not received firmware upgrades for a long time now, altough it is still being sold. Essentially, Linksys has dropped support, concentrating on the newer v2. Here are two things to consider: (1) you don't know whether you will get a v1 or v2, and if you get the old one you are stuck (like me -- and they will not replace for a v2) and (2) if they treat their v1 customers this way, do you think they would do it also to their v2 customers? D-Link has fabulous products, so does Speedstream and SMC and Belkin.
Rating: Summary: Linksys cable router Review: I have installed several of these wireless routers for our cable modem customers. I have only had one that failed during the initial installation and after spending a couple of hours with a very knowledgeable person in their tech support, we determined it was DOA. No problem, I replaced it with a brand new one and it performed fine. Setup is a no-brainer. Plug it in, turn the computers on, and you are up and running. I have installed comparable Netgear products and they are somewhat more difficult to provision. The Linksys unit automatically discovers the DNS and IP address automatically. Using the 4 ports, the unit performed flawlessly and with the wireless units adequately. Do the firmware and software upgrades from Linksys' website as there are enhancements to the products. I recommend the Linksys over all the other brands due to quality, ease of use and tech support.
Rating: Summary: linksys wireless Review: Easy to set up. Older home with thick walls limits usable distance. No interference. No problems. Looks good. Good support from Linksys.
