Rating: Summary: Easy and Powerful Enough... Review: I bought this router to conect my home network to a Cable modem connection. It's easy enough to use that a complete novice could figure it out, but also has some fairly powerful security features, including encryption and MAC address filtering, in addition to the standard Linksys routing features.
Rating: Summary: More than meets the eye Review: You get more than you think. Since I have had the Linksys, my Norton Firewall program hasn't gone off once. It has great firewall protection and is upgrade flashable. I have NEVER once regretted buying the unit.
Rating: Summary: Wow was that Easy! Review: I've been using PCs since the mid 80's, but I'm not real technical. After the new router and the wireless card came I was really apprehensive about installing it, so I let it sit for a week until I felt brave enough to tackle it. In less than a half hour we are up and running. My daughter is now upstairs with full internet access. I now have my PC all to myself. The installation software did all the work for me. At one point I wasn't even sure it was installed because it went to quickly. If you have any doubt about buying this. Forget it. Order it now!
Rating: Summary: Easy to set up and runs reliably Review: When I recently got a new computer, I got into networking. After doing some research I settled on Linksys this system, since it seemed to come out on or near top in the usual tech magazines and got high marks for user friendliness. I've not been disappointed, even as a network novice. The system ran out of the box, I set up my network going straight to wireless (two desktops, using the USB receiver, and one laptop using the PCMCIA slot, one shared printer patched in via the Linksys print server so any station can print without the need for another station acting as print server) and I haven't had any issues. The manuals had some kinks but I got through the setup fine. Very satisfied customer.
Rating: Summary: Great for SOHO use, but don't forget to use WEP Review: I use this unit in my small home office, with a couple PCs, network printer and wireless link to the laptop. There is NO encription or security for wireless, so don't forget to turn on WEP (either 64 bit or 128) to avoid having neighbors using your Internet connection or accessing your local LAN. It's important to note that there is no firewall protection from the wireless link to the local LAN, so any PC that connects via wireless is able to access all system on your LAN. This can make you prone to security issues if you don't enable the WEP security. We enjoy this unit, and find it very easy to download the latest firmware updates from linksys.com and perform the update using any web browser. We also use Linux servers behind the firewall, and the "linksysmon" SNMP package which logs all traffic through the firewall by enabling the log broadcast option on the linksys. Also keep in mind this is a NAT firewall, and not a true router. Although you can do port forwarding, there is no routing ability from/to different IP addresses. This is not a problem for most applications, but something to be aware of. I recommend this product, and have worked with several installations for my company and several of my clients.
Rating: Summary: Simple installation and worked the first time Review: Just followed the instructions on the CD and had it talking to my laptop and cable modem in five minutes. I then installed an Orinoco network card in another PC and an Apple AirPort card in an iBook which were located in other rooms of the house. In both cases, they picked up the signal right away and worked the first time. It couldn't possibly be any easier. Great product!
Rating: Summary: Good product, great price Review: I purchased this along with the Linksys wireless card several months ago and have not had any problems with it. Installation was a breeze. After attaching the router to my computer and cable modem, I downloaded the firmware update. Following the instructions in the guide accompanying the Router, I made sure all the settings were correct for my Win 98 and Win 2000 systems. Everything worked fine on the first try. My Win 98 desktop is attached to the router with a Cat 5 cable (you'll probably want to get one of these if you don't have an extra: Belkin A3L791-07-S Category 5e Snagless Patch Cable). I often use both my desktop and my laptop at the same time without any problem. I have also been able to FTP to my laptop from my desktop when transferring large files. The biggest benefit is I can use my laptop anywhere in my condo and the surrounding area. I can actually take my laptop to the restaurant downstairs and work while eating lunch. Because of this relatively wide area of connectivity, I decided to enable the WEP 128-bit security. Using the passphrase method worked fine, and I haven't noticed a reduction in speed (though I assume there is). I don't have any information about using this router with other wireless cards, so I can't comment on compatibility other than the 128-bit security is listed as proprietary to Linksys. If you already have a card from another manufacturer, you might try a router from them or find a friend or business with a wireless router that you can test against.
Rating: Summary: Wired-Wireless combo on mixed platforms Review: I agonized over wired versus wireless for my residential system that includes broadband cable modem, a Dell Dimension running Microsoft XP, an IMac running Apple OSX, and a laptop running Microsoft NT. I chose to wire the desktops for reliable signal and stable performance and buy a card for my laptop for mobility. The linksys router brought it all together perfectly, and installed in minutes with mail and internet working like a charm. I had zero issues with configurations, drivers, addresses, etc. Also, Linksys support (using the Amazon customer number) was great!
Rating: Summary: Easy to use and works like a charm Review: I purchased this item to replace the linksys 4 port router I already had been using (also a good deal) and now have this set up in my house. I am using two iBooks and an IBM laptop. The Macs took about 10 minutes to set up, the PC quite a bit longer. The wireless router was easy to set up and the tech people at Linksys are 2nd to none. When I had a problem setting up the IBM laptop I called IBM's tech service and received no help at all. I called Linksys's 800 # and they helped me configure the laptop. I am really impressed with the service and the device - good signal strength, easy set up and smart tech service people - nothing more to ask for
