Rating: Summary: works for me Review: Had no problems with this router, been in uses for 4 months now. Excellent in all respects. My personal experience, would buy again.
Rating: Summary: The proof is in this pudding. Review: Fifteen minutes ago I pulled this, my first router out of the box. I was completely hesitant because of so many mixed reviews. Now, fifteen minutes later, I just finished installing the complementary linksys g card and I am writing this online review from the basement, on my laptop, to tell you that this product is magnificent and is very easy to use.Upstairs, my computer is running WinME. My laptop uses WinMX - it is an IBM. As you can see there are no problems. Shayan.
Rating: Summary: Plugged it in and it works; assumes prior security knowledge Review: I am not an IT person, but a business person familiar with computers. I bought this for my home. I previously had a 3-year old Dell 802.11b access point and SMC hub that I replaced with this one Linksys unit. The installation process was very simple and straightforward, a pleasant surprise since I had to call SMC support a few years ago when I configured that unit. The installation steps having to do with security were greek to me (about WEP, etc.). I know you need this stuff but the product assumes you know what you want rather than stepping you through how to configure the security. I am getting help from a local computer guy for that part. In the meantime, I have a working network and I'm pretty remote so it's not a huge issue for me. If I lived in a city I'd have the computer guy here now. The range is definitely better with this unit than my 3-year old 802.11b access point, and speedier too--up to 54kbps. My old unit didn't reach all rooms in the house (about 3,000 sq ft, one story) and now it does, although on low signal in some distant rooms...but it works! I've also called the Tech Support line (I'm also trying to configure the Wireless-G print server, for which I needed help to get the wireless to work). Was on hold 5 minutes, talked to first line rep, then on hold for another 5 minutes to connect to a printserver specialist, who answered my question quickly. It's nice that it's available 24 hours (I called at 11PM), but I was talking to India and had to repeat myself a few times and ask for them to repeat a few times due to the language barrier. Not a huge price to pay for the convenience of 24 hour support. Overall, I recommend this product
Rating: Summary: Poor compatability with 802.11B Review: I bought this router to work with th legacy 802.11B and newer 802.11g devices. It has compatability issues with many of the b devices I have used it with. Further, the range is worse than it was with my old Linksys (802.11b only) router. Technical support was pretty poor. They would deny that they had heard of problems, but then slipped that there were patches in the works. Hmmm. I would not recommend this router. I replaced it after a few weeks with a Siemens 802.11B only model with far better performance overall.
Rating: Summary: trouble, trouble, trouble! Review: had this for a month now. Worked great at first, then the power button would not stop blinking (means no-go) so a reset would work... for a week. Then it got worse! I would have hold down the reset button (with the tip of a pen) and unplug it... it works great! ...but for only a day or two. I would then have to play the reset button / unpluging the unit game for 5 or ten times before it would work! Then, this game would not work anymore (after three days). O.K., called Linksys... talked to someone in India, they had a "Quick fix", I say this because they changed my network connection settings and it worked for about two days... now its back to the same game... blinking power light. Called linsys again... talked to someone in India... line gets disconnected after 25 minutes of being on hold...; How hard is it to make a router that works!?! To sum it up: Tech support: 3 out of 10. Product: 3 out of 10. Satisfaction -3 out of 10! Whats the deal? I spend $100 on a router (a router of all things!) and I expect it to work... no go! If you dont know what I'm talking about, read more reviews about routers on amazon. Why even bother with a router... just unplug each connection as needed. :(
Rating: Summary: I wish I'd never wasted my money on this router! Review: Long story .. bought the router 4+ months ago so my second computer could access the internet using Wireless connection. It didn't work - the signal was so weak and dropped every few seconds it was totally unusable. I tried every known fix, relocating the computers, all the frequencies, spent hours and hours on the phone to technical support... no solution found. So they suggested I got a cable connection instead. So I save my $'s and finally get this installed. Guess what? It didn't work at all! When I phoned technical support I was pleasantly surprised to get straight through to help... however instead of trying to help me get the wired connection working they insisted again on only trying to go through getting the wireless connection working. Having just spent hundreds of dollars getting the wiring installed and having gone through the wireless issue for weeks on the phone 4+ months ago I had no interest in the wireless connection whatsoever! The response to the cabled connection not working... was .. you must have a faulty cable! The help person kept insisting I should replace the cable immediately and didn't seem to understand that the cable went through walls! and it wasnt a 5 second job to replace the cable. I gave up on the call as they wouldn't help me. I then went away and played with the settings for 2 more days. Suddenly it one change and the cable connected computer link worked.. well it did for 4 weeks then it died. I phoned linksys tech support and after hours of playing about they told me to update the firmware (which I already had done) and ended the call. I went away and bought a D-Link router which works fine!
Rating: Summary: Works well Review: I have had no problems with this Router with easy setup and use I would buy this product again. Linksys has a great product.
Rating: Summary: Worked out of the box Review: Just installed wireless wrt54g router with win98se ethernet cabled in and communicating with win ME on wpm54g wireless adapter. Router connected to cable modem is communicating with Comcast internet service. My goal was to have two or more computers use the Comcast internet connection without having to purchase multiple IPs. After reading all the problems that some reviewers described, I was very surprised to see my win98se system come up and communicate with Comcast without having to do anything other than plug in cables and power on the router. The only thing I had to do was change the security to the way I wanted it. A little more trouble with the PCI card in the win ME computer. The install didn't go right (I'm not quite sure what happened - it just would not pick up the SSID I entered). Tried to reinstall over the first install and that didn't work. So I uninstalled on the win ME system and reinstalled, set the SSID, and bingo! I was up and running. For home networking, I decided to use Linksys because Microsoft looked like it might have upgrade limitations and D-Links reliability was a real concern - especially the dropped sessions. Granted, Linksys costs about $30 more for router and adapter, but it was worth it since I had no problems. Hope your install goes as good as mine!
Rating: Summary: Linksys' 802.11b router was unreliable Review: To get Linksys' previous 802.11b model (BEFR11S4) to work, I had to buy their WSB24 range extender. My mistake; I should have just returned it to the seller and bought a competitor's product. I put up with irritating interruptions, mostly at night, for 8 months. Also my mistake. But last week the router died. Linksys has offered me a replacement BEFR11S4, which of course is now so obsolete they are giving these things away. To get the replacement I have to jump through a half-dozen silly hoops and wait weeks for delivery. That's their mistake. I bought a D-Link Extreme G and both range and reliability are excellent-- no interrupts. The best advice I can give is to distrust Linksys claims and put no stock in its warranty. I've also had problems with Linksys' laptop card (but not Microsoft's). I've learned my lesson and stay away from Linksys now.
Rating: Summary: It sucks Review: I bought this router because I bought the wireless B Linksys 2 years ago and it worked great. However, this one sucks. I got it from best buy. The first 2 days it worked fine. Then it started getting problems once every 2 days. 3 weeks later, it totally stop working. Since it was within 1 month so I took it back to store for exchange for a new one (I regret I exchange it, I was supposed to return it). The second one is like the first one. The first few days it worked, but I am struggling with the router every day. It would just transfer the data very very slow sometimes and even stop working. I have to restart it regually. Even worse, someitmes I have to restart it several times to get it fixed. It sucks.
