Summary: Incompatibiltiy problems
Review: I bought the WRT54G wireless router to connect to my new Compaq Evo laptop with a Multiport 802.11b. I couldn't get the wireless connection to work at all until I downloaded the firmware update of 1/29/03. Now I have a connection, but every time I try to enable WEP encryption or disable SSID broadacst, I lose the wireless connection. I am also not able to share files and printers. After several calls and e-mails Linksys finally said that non-linksys wireless network devices have not yet been tested with the WRT54G. I am going to return this and try another router.

Summary: very good router
Review: Setup is simple... 10 minutes. Throughput is very satisfactory as is quality of signal. Range seems pretty good. I live in two-story house and have no trouble with connection, despite drop in signal strength (as low as 57% every now and then). Most of the time, I have 100% signal strength.Do follow the manual recommendations (as other reviewer mentioned) and secure your router!

Summary: Up and running is less than 10 minutes
Review: I purchased the router and 1 Linksys WPC54G Wireless 54g PC Card. The inital setup of the router was simple. The PC card setup was painless as well. Works pretty well. Haven't had any of the issues I've been reading in the other reviews. The best part about this router is now I have a DHCP server. Before I had to manually put my IP settings into my laptop every time I switched networks. The only issue I am having is that I can no longer use my 2.4mhz corless phone. Every time I turn it on it kills my network connection. But my 900mhz phone works fine. 10/31/02 - I noticed that Linksys has a new version of this router out(1.1) I was curious to know what the difference was and went out and purchased it. The looks of the router itself are different, less flashing lights and the Cicso logo. Functionally however there is a huge difference. The long range has improved greatly, I get about an extra 20 feet of range than I did with the 1.0 version. Also, I have not had a dropped signal since I hooked it up about 1 month ago. This version also has an SPI firewall as well as more security options for the wireless client. My adivce to you is that if you are looking to purchase this router, make sure you pick up the 1.1 version! And before you begin using it, after you get it out of the box, press the reset button to make sure it is back to the factory default setting, go to linksys's website and update the firmware to 1.42.2. Summary: Linksys Wireless WRT54G - Not fully compatible with all 802-
Review: I just purchased a the Linksys WRT54G wireless AP / Router. I'll
admit the setup was very easy using a web interface. Anyway, backward
compatable...not yet?!!? It seems from talking with a CSR
professional at Linksys that their product doesn't even fully work
with their own wireless PCI or PCMCIA cards. I hope you get it right
soon. Anyway, as of this date 02/11/03, Linksys doesn't have an
update that will work with my wireless products. And did update the
firmware from 1/28/03, it didn't fix my problem. As for my equipment...I have a Toshiba e740 and a Gateway Laptop with
a Cisco 350 PCMCIA card. Both of these devices work great on the job
where we have an entire campus of Cisco Wireless 340-350 access
points.
I'm hoping to speak w/ the Product Manager about your WRT54G Wireless
AP / Router. I'm very concerned that you put out a product without
testing it w/ other products, non-the-less, your own. Your CSR Rep
even told me that most of your own 802.11b cards aren't working either
w/ your wireless AP / router which frustrates me extremely. How can
you put a product out that advertises that it is backward compatible
with 802.11b? The access point doesn't work with 802.11b products and
you advertise it does? SAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT till Linksys gets
it right.

Summary: Piece of junk Do Not Buy! Only Half of functions work!
Review: Funny how amazon.com hid the bad reviews which are true about this router. There is no UPnP and Port Trigering, The DMZ option does not work, port forwarding does not work,And funny, Linksys confirmed all these problems when I called them. Linksys support has no clue about supporting these. I had to get to A Level 2 manager for support. These are overpriced for what functions on them. Half the functions dont work on it, there is nothing good to say but its junk.

Summary: Easy setup, good connection
Review: The router took just a few minutes to configure and drop in to my current network with no interruption. Enabling wireless security was a snap and features like a MAC address filter list and disabling the SSID broadcast make this access point a great choice if you're worried about network security. The range in my medium-sized apartment is excellent, the speeds never drop below 36Mbps and that only happens if I've got my arm over the transmitter. (using a Linksys 54g PCMCIA card) All things considered, this is a great product.

Summary: works well to "wire" a house
Review: With a new laptop and a bedroom in the attic I had to set up a wireless network off of a DSL or go without access. Linksys makes it extremly easy (and thier 24hr tech support is very helpful if you miss something small) I get 60% signal on the 3rd floor which is more than enough for most occurances.

Summary: Linksys WRT54G works great!
Review: I originally had a continuous problem with disconnects. I found that the problem was using DHCP with this router. Once I turned off DHCP (using a static IP now) the router is rock solid. I'm hopeful (and expecting) that Linksys will release new firmware correcting this problem. Good luck!

Summary: incomplete documentation
Review: On the wireless side, the router communicates well with my 802.11g notebook adapter. Setup was easier than easy with WinXP Home. On the WAN side however, I absolutely can not get this thing to talk to my Comcast cable modem. Comcast tech support refused to touch the issue. To their credit, the Linksys web site offers specific and easy to follow instructions for what to do to configure their routers to communicate with with Comcast cable modems. Alas, when I attempted to configure the router as described, the settings would not save. I'm going back to my old Linksys ethernet router which works just fine.

Summary: Junk
Review: I loved linksys. Now I hate it. Nothing but problems. I keep getting disconnects and speed problems and my PC's are located less than 10' away from the router. I have a hardwired xbox hooked in and I even have problems keeping it connected with this router. Time to move on.
