Rating: Summary: Excellent product Review: I replaced a wired router from Linksys (BEFSR41) with this wireless one. Setup was a snap. Performance is great (even with WEP enabled). I highly recommend this product over some of the cheaper priced competitors. Linksys products are excellent and there is enough help out there if you can't get decent technical support from Linksys themselves. I can't say that about other vendors.
Rating: Summary: Easy Setup and Works Great Review: I installed the Linksys 54g PCI Router along with a Linksys 54g PCI Adapter, the setup was easy to follow and went smoothly. I have had no disconnects or problems at all, the 54g PCI Adapter is in a PC in another room about 30 feet away. I do not have any 802.11b cards to support, this makes a big difference since the current firmware implementation drops to the 11 Mbps speed if you run in "compatibility mode" and the 54g may not work that great even then with 11b cards. But if your setting up a completely 54g based network, this works great and is a breeze to install. The router provides a very easy way to connect multiple PCs to a Cable or Broadband modem, and with no wires, the wife will appreciate that!
Rating: Summary: Very unreliable and poor quality!! Review: About 3 weeks ago, I bought the WRT54G and WPC54G pair and both devices are now defective. WRT54G many a times, doesn't power on. The red diagnostic light comes on and stays on. Once in a while it works and I am unable to connect even across two rooms (Tried several combinations!). The WPC54G card worked for a few days and now gives a "Failed to change device configuration" message. I will call Linksys about it but the website says that I need the UPC code from the box which I disposed off. It is a terrible waste of money!!
Rating: Summary: IMPORTANT Review: Hello out there! I love linksys software, but for AOL users! Wireless G WRT54G does not support AOL. If you use AOL check with linksys first to see if they have updated drivers, otherwise get the other router (the b router, sorry I cannot remember the model number! its the one that is 89 dollars! Its a drag, Wireless G is faster and has better encrypton! Hopefully they will fix it soon
Rating: Summary: Fairly Happy Review: This router was easy to setup. I had it running with basic settings in under 1/2 hour. The signal will reach into my basement from the top floor (with some degradation, 3 story house). Initially, my PDA (HP Jornada) wouldn't detect the signal. I called technical support which resulted in a waste of an hour as they didn't know what the issue was. I noticed Linksys provided a flash rom update about a week after I purchased the unit and the update fixed the issue with the PDA. I have only had to reset the router once in the two months I have owned it. Rather happy with it at this point.
Rating: Summary: Good Product -- Easy to Install - Backward compatible Review: This router seems to have gotten mixed reviews for ease of installation and its compatability with 11b cards. My experience with installation was quite good. I upgraded both my card and router and really had no problems with installation on my Sony VAIO laptop (XP operating system). The care basically insatlled itself and the "install wizard" on the CD that came with the router basically set the router up to work with one computer (with the 54g card) and also a second computer in my house (with an 11b card). The setup wasn't quite perfect the first time -- I needed to go through a web-based interface to set up the router (to given it info on my DSL provider account), though the documentation for this was staightforward. The whole process was probably about 10 minutes. Setting up the 2nd computer really was easy to -- basically hooking the computer to the router and running the installation wizard again. I haven't tried to set up any advanced features on the router, but it is not difficult to set up for basic use. The documentation is much better than the documentation that came with the 11b router -- I needed a lot of help from Linksys technical assistance to set that one up. I like this router a whole lot better the Linksys 11b router it replaced -- the signal strength seems ot be much stroners, seldom falling below the "very good" range (and most often excellent within 25-50 feet of the router. The transmission speed is also quite good, with pages loading very quickly. I have had no problem either with backward compatiaibility, in that the "mixed mode" feature lets you both 54 and 11 Mb cards off the router.
Rating: Summary: Linksys screws up again Review: A few years ago, I was one of the unlucky 'early adopters' of a Linksys 4 port router (wired type) and, for almost a year, had to endure continuous firmware updates before Linksys got that router's problems fixed. Now, again, I am an 'early adopter' of a Linksys product - the Linksys 54G wireless broadband router - and, deja vue, I am back where I was with problems with this latest piece of Linksys technology. Two phone calls were made to Linksys tech support during which a firmware update to the 54G router and multiple resets of my cable modem and the 54G and reboots of my computer were required to get the 54G to connect on the WAN/Internet side of the router to the cable modem. I then set up the Linksys wireless-G notebook adapter and was, for a short time, able to access the internet until my laptop froze and I had to reboot. After rebooting, no recognition of the wireless network. I eventually got it to connect and found that the 54G router had dropped the WAN connection again and nothing I did would reestablish it - AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH! I am not willing to, again, be a paying Linksys product beta tester. Everything is going back to the store for a refund. By the way, I stopped using my Linksys 4 port wired router (its sitting, unused, in a drawer) and replaced it with an SMC 4 port wired router - the SMC 7004ABR - and have never had a problem with it. When SMC has a similar product to the Linksys 54G, I will try it. After this latest Linksys dissapointment, I have decided to never buy any of their products again.
Rating: Summary: This router has half the features of my 3 year old SMC Review: I purchased this router to replace a 2 year old SMC wireless router, only to find that this router lacks half the features of the SMC! The "Log" in this router only logs packets that get through, not ones that are blocked. Plus, the DHCP server on this router is a joke; the DHCP lease time is measured in MINUTES!! That means internal IP addresses change constantly, so the virtual server functionality is useless. It also locks up my Linksys modem because of an Ethernet MTU sizing issue (confirmed by Linksys support). The Wireless-G support is buggy; it won't work set to "G-only" mode when used with a Linksys Wireless-G card. I bought all Linksys peripherals (modem, router, card) thinking that products from a single vendor would work better together... WRONG!!
Rating: Summary: The cutting edge of home wireless so far Review: I am thoroughly impressed with the WRT54G. The throughput is the best I have seen with wireless routers and the setup is very flexible. I bought a couple of matching notebook cards, but its also working extremely well with the D-Link 520+ pci adapter I have in one pc. With the mac filtering option, I just select which pc's the router is to communicate with, and you can also tell it to stop internet access for a pc with a particular mac address for a certain number of hours of the day and which days of the week as well. ( A wonderful feature if you have a teenager that you want to restrict for study time). With this security feature, Im not sure why you need WEP since that slows down your throughput anyway. I just disabled SSID broadcast and enabled the mac filtering. The signal strength of the router is fantastic. It's about time companies started building affordable routers that you dont need to buy and additional antenna signal booster for.
Rating: Summary: Just didn't work. Review: I've liked and used Linksys products in the past, but this simply didn't work. Two PCI adapters failed to associate to the router in three different machines. I was going to just exchange the router until I found that having the PCI adapter in my PC caused my first NIC to malfunction. What a waste of time.
