Rating: Summary: Works just fine! Review: I (being a non computer person) managed to install this and get it running with very little problem. The only issue I have is with Windows XP which I do seem to be able to share all files with the other computers on the network. Yet to solve that problem! The instructions that came with it are not written for the non computer person and it took a little rereading to understand.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely great, even for beginners Review: I was on the internet about three minutes from the time I turned the router on, even using a wireless 54g card. Fantastic, quick set-up for a first-time user like myself. I was also able to connect a 1999 iMac DV SE running a 802.11b card, though I did have to download new firmware (check your version when you configure your router, it will save you some grief...). I was really impressed at how simple the installation is.Range is pretty good. I live in an big old stucco house with lots of metal lathe, etc. and I'm able to use throughout. Keep in mind that broadband connections run much, much slower than the ideal throughput of the router. I'm also thrilled by the generous level of support Linksys provides to end users. Hold times for customer service were negligible, and the people were very friendly. Their knowledge and willingness to walk me through the issues I had with the Airport (even though they don't "officially" support it) were remarkable. So...if you're new to networking, and not particularly computer-savvy, don't be intimidated. This was a painless transition and having wireless in the house is so SWEET.
Rating: Summary: Bugs galore Review: Still not a complete offering from this supplier still very much a work in progress for Linksys by the looks of the firmware revisions.
Rating: Summary: Greatest Wireless Router Ever Review: I have recenly bought this product and it is great. It was very easy to setup. All you had to do was pop in the cd and follow the easy instructions such as plug this part in. The computer automaticly configures everything. This took me about five mins to setup the entre thing. I thought it was going to take like an hour. Yea right. This procduct is so easy a person who hasnt seen a computer before could install it. Then i bought the wireless notebook card that ran off my router. If you are lookin for really good range without lots of packet loss then this is product to buy. This has range of a few hundred feet through walls and what not. If you are looking for a high quality router for a cheap price then this is the procduct.
Rating: Summary: Beam me to the homeworld Review: A good piece of tech that has revolutionized my homeworld - Laptops on the porch, in our bed, in the livingroom, in the dining room, and in the bathtup (running on batteries only - kids don't try this at home). The setup was a touch tricky using Sprint DSL. Linksys-help- folks more than walked me through it. Once installed, our four laptops and two desktops danced among our collective subdirectories. Quality and strength of signal are acceptable even two floors away and outside.
Rating: Summary: Works great (now) Review: I was an early purchaser of the WRT54G, and had a few problems with stability and speed - finally, the March 03 firmware update has resulted in an excellent product! Great performance, better price, easy setup. An excellent product all around. The only reason I give it 4 stars is the early difficulties I had, which have been overcome.
Rating: Summary: Returning 54G router and card for a refund. Review: As a database analyst, I occasionally work from home by logging-in through VPN. I've been using the Linksys 802.11B router and cards (connected to a wired Win XP desktop and two wireless Win XP laptops) for almost two years without a problem. Decided to upgrade to 54G. Big mistake! After three days, I can't get either the Linksys 802.11B card from my work's laptop or the new Linksys 54G card on my wife's laptop to connect to the new 54G router. Both laptops are in the same room no more than seven feet away from the router. Same spot that we have always connected using the old router at full signal strength in both cards. Downloaded the new 54G driver for the card and firmware for the router - still nothing (router is set to mixed mode and B card has latest firmware and driver, I also uninstalled the B card from my wife's laptop prior to installing the new G card). When I connect my work's laptop to the 54G router using Ethernet, which does work, the VPN connection drops every ten minutes. The router's "stay alive" feature disappeared after installing the new firmware update. My old Linksys router never dropped the VPN connection, wired or wireless. I was on the phone with tech support for an hour. He had me execute almost the same routine that I had perfomed prior to calling: I rolled back the card's driver to original (Win XP roll-back feature), uninstalled and reinstalled card from the control panel with reboots, reset the router, and rolled back to router's original firmware -- nothing. I can't even ping the router from either the B laptop nor the G laptop via command prompt. After taking my email address and other info, the tech finally ended my call by promising to send a "new" driver for the card (probably some untested beta patch). I have yet to receive this mysterious driver (it's been two days). I told the tech that the problem may be related to the router and not the card since I can't connect either my work's laptop using 802.11B Linksys card, which I have been using for the past year with my old router, nor my new 54G card. No matter. The tech was fixated on the 54G card's driver, that's all he focused on the whole time... he said the router was fine since the ethernet ports work OK... wouldn't consider other options. If the router is "fine", why can't my B card connect? Whatever! I give up! This is the first Linksys product that I will return for a refund. Good thing I didn't put my old Linksys router on EBay as I planned to. Hopefully in six months Linksys will have the bugs worked out of their 802.11G products. However, by that time we will start to see 802.11E products which promise better security and support for multimedia streaming. -Joe
Rating: Summary: Great Product Review: Bought this a few months ago with the Laptop card. I was having intermittent problems with it losing connection. Then I noticed that Linksys had provided a Firmware update for the Router as well as a driver update for the Laptop card. I updated both peices of hardware and now no longer have any problems. It is great to see Linksys providing updates as quickly as they do. And yes, Amazon still has this at the chepeast price around!!
Rating: Summary: QA of Linksys questionable. Review: My experience with the Linksys WAP54G has been a nightmare. I ordered 2 WAP54G access points and 3 54G wireless PCI cards. When they arrived I was excited but that excitement quickly turned to frustration when I tried to actually use the equipment. I had no problems with setting up the PCI cards and configuring the access points with the software included on the CD. The cards connected fine and I was up and running. But when I tried using the web interface to configure the access points they just would not respond. So I rma'd the two access points and they returned two access points with the same issue. Now it IS NOT an issue with my browser or computer for I tried accessing from various platforms and browsers with no avail. Since you cant access the web interface you can't change the admin password and although the items work they are unusable for security reasons. On the RMA boxes returned to me it states "Linksys QA Tested. This device has been inspected and tested by Linksys QA technicians, and is certified to comply with the original factory specifications" I think not. I will never again purchase a linksys product.
Rating: Summary: Wireless as it should be Review: I was a bit skeptical on setting up a home network, let alone a wireless one. However, using the WRT54G, within 20 minutes, I was up and roaming the house at the advertised 54MB per second! I would suggest you use all 802.11(g) devices/adapaters for the best compatability. There are enough security features that you can enable (aside from WEP which can really slow the connection) that Linksys did a pretty good job in the overall design and features of the router. If your thinking wireless, go with this one.
