Rating: Summary: Could not get wireless lan to work Review: This router worked fine for me--when I used the 4 ethernet ports in the back. But when I tried to connect a second computer through the much ballyhooed wireless feature, it completely failed--and I tried two different Linksys devices, a pci adapter and wireless ethernet bridge. I wound up taking it and all my Linksys equipment back for a refund (read my pci card review for the sad details.) Bottom line: stick to wires for the time being. This wifi technology is extremely moody and unstable, not nearly as solid and reliable as old-fashioned ethernet cables...
Rating: Summary: Far-reaching hotspot, excellent support Review: Getting the router setup in a "vanilla" configuration that works for 99% of users was very easy, and I was able to do this no problem. However, I have some complexities with how my network is setup -- I have two routers linked together, one a standard "wired" router, and the other is the Linksys WRT54G. Linksys customer support walked me through all the aspects of getting everything to work. When I wanted to lock down my wireless network extra-securely, the tech support guy walked me through that as well, taking an extra 15 minutes or so. Very patient. Finally, with my WiFi network setup, I took my laptop outside (with a Linkys WiFi 802.11g card) and checked to see how long the signal would extend. I got about 100 yards past my home and still had a 1 Mbps connection. I could have gone farther and still stay connected, but people were looking at me funny and I was starting to feel like a bit of an obsessive geek. With such a wide network footprint, one should definitely secure their WiFi network. Again, Linksys customer support can help here. This Linksys router provides a number of options, including MAC address filtering. Essentially, what it means is that only your computers can connect to your router. Very secure. I definitely would buy from Linksys again.
Rating: Summary: Easiest network setup I've ever done Review: I've been setting up networks for close to 15 years now. Most of the time there is that something gives you grief - drivers, cables, machines. This was fabulously easy to get done. I connected the router to my cable modem and installed the wireless NIC cards in 2 laptops and 2 desktops. Everything came and stayed up without a hitch. We now have wireless, high speed Internet connections all over the house, and most importantly I was able to retreat to my summer office (outside in the Gazebo with two wireless phones and wireless laptop) and continue to slave away. Technology that doesn't drive me crazy will always get my vote.
Rating: Summary: Complaint Review: I ordered this product from Amazon.com and was very excited to get this in, set it up, had problems and called Linksys. I was told that this product does not support AOL, and to go with another model. This will probably be the last Linksys product I buy
Rating: Summary: Work great with my Macs Review: I wanted to set up a wireless network at home for my wife's iBook and share the network with my G4 and HP laser printer. This product was ideal. Easy to set up, you use your web browser to confirgure it. I was even able to share my usb inkjet printer using Apple's printer sharing. I am only using the "B" standard now but my iBook speeds are the same as the G4 using Earthlink DSL modem. One firmware update if you want compliance with the finalized "G" standard. Good Product!
Rating: Summary: Works great, only missing a few features Review: Now that the 11g spec is final, and a new firmware has been released supporting it, the WRT54G is a serious contender for your wireless network. It's easy and really works, with some incredible range. Compatability with other devices is excellent too; I've only found one 11b device that won't work with its mixed mode (and it won't work with *anyone's* mixed mode). One hopes that future upgrades will include more control over security settings, as well as the surprisingly omitted option to set up DHCP reservations based on MAC addresses. It'd also be a good idea if the unit either came more secure in default configuration, or took more steps to help you get it set up in a more secure fashion. But you can make it secure, you just have to realize that it's up to you to do it.
Rating: Summary: Secure Wireless Review: Replaced my 4 port (no wireless) Linksys router with this one. Wired works just the same and I was able to get wireless set up securely in under ten minites. Remember to change the SSID name and set it non broadcast, enable WEP etc. etc.
Rating: Summary: Making Wireless a reality...So easy! Review: The setup and configuration could not be any easier to do. This product is completely perfect in every way. From the Router internet interface...to the wireless ease...to the 4 port hub and the super wicked looks. Let's talk about the internet interface: Really straight forward and easy to configure. The WEP security works very well. Changing IP address is a breeze. Restricting only specific MAC addresses is a fantastic security function. (The new WPA is now available. This takes wireless to the next level -- UP!) Oh...make sure to download and install the latest version of the firmware. This can be done with the internet interface. ***Also...very important...heed LinkSys minimum recommendations for security.*** This product has been engineered very well. ...
Rating: Summary: FINALLY, IT WORKS -- NO THANKS TO LINKSYS Review: After 8 hours of setup, I finally got my Linksys Wireless LAN to work. Linksys Tech Support was not helpful at all in solving the problems. I had to uninstall everything and start over, including the Windows XP networking components (TCP/IP, Windows Networking, etc.). This could have been done in less than 2 hours, but this solution came about through trial and error. If you want to use this router, I recommend you get everything working first before adding any security to your wireless LAN. On the positive side, the router works fine with the wired LAN and lets the wireless and wired computers communicate and share files. On the other hand, the wireless connection drops out intermittently for no apparant reason. Recommended you go with a company that offers better support.
Rating: Summary: DOESN'T WORK Review: This product flat out doesn't work. The installation documentation isn't correct, the Linksys website isn't correct and Linksys Tech Support can't get the product to work. This is extremely frustrating because this product is highly rated. My network uses XP Pro in a peer-to-peer LAN (no domain, just a workgroup) with all current service packs installed. Linksys Tech Support says the router must be set to defaults and WEP (security) turned off to work! Using those settings, I can connect to the Internet but still can't access anything else on the LAN. Assuming I could get the router to work, would I really want to use a wireless LAN with no security?
