Summary: Excellent Product
Review: I am normally too busy to write many reviews about the items I purchase from Amazon, but I felt I would say a few thins about this product considering I have taken the time AND money to purchase not just 1 but 2 of these. Over the last year I have bought 2 of the routers, as well as the cards for different laptops. I run on 3 different systems and had no probably getting the computer to recongize the router on ANY of the systems. I laugh at the previous review where a "so-called expert" at networking could not figure this simple, yet trustworthy, router out. All you have to do is follow the directions provided and it mostly requires you to put the CD in and read what is on the screen. That has not been too hard for me.

Summary: Excellent value - a snap to install!
Review: Even the most non-technical person can set up a router and wireless access point with this product.

The WRT54G's web based configuration menus are a breeze. Linksys has preselected defaults to get you up and running quickly, and placed the options most people won't use in an "Advanced" area.

I bought mine in January, before the 802.11g standard was finalized. I recently used the web interface on the router to perform a firmware update, and it was a snap! No doubt, the simplest I have seen.

The Linksys PCMCIA cards I bought with this unit work well in Windows 98 and Windows XP (haven't tried any other OS). The driver is a no-brainer to install - the CD autoruns setup.exe when you put it in the drive. Couldn't be easier! Updating the driver off the Linksys web site (after the g standard was finalized) was just as smooth, and didn't even require a reboot on the XP box.

Summary: Easy Setup and Flawless operation!
Review: I have no alliance or connection with Linksys, but it took me only 12 minutes (I timed it) from the time I opened the box until I was surfing wired and wirelessly with the router. And, that's with the router and cable modem on a different floor than my PCs. Also, the firmware was only updated through March, 2003.

There were no configuration changes need, though I will make some for security purposes along with downloading the latest firmware.

I have used Linksys before and have never had a problem with any of their products. They are a trusted name!

Summary: Me, XP, VPN, WRT54G does it all!!!
Review: I am a long time technology professional; believe me when I say that this router is totally fine for home use. I have a Win Me desktop, a Win XP laptop and my work laptop running W2K. I can access my corporate network with VPN using ipSec and have the other PCs online at the same time with no issues at all. Setup of the system took about 20 minutes (if you are not network literate, have a friend who is help you). I then installed the Linksys WPC54G wireless card in my home XP laptop. This took about 5 minutes. The wireless range is not quite what I would like but your milage may vary. (this is due more to the distance and number of walls I am trying to cover than the card itself). Be sure to follow the security recommendations in the instructions and consider enabling MAC filtering for the wireless attached PCs. The router will maintain it's configuration through a power down as well. Good luck!

Summary: Probably the WORST pc peripheral I have ever bought
Review: I implore you to ignore the hyped up reviews, which were obviously posted by Linksys personnel.

I won't go into great detail, but let me say this:
1. I am an accomplished computer programmer (MFC/.NET/DirectX)
2. I am very familiar with Windows platform & TCP/IP protocol
3. Configuring this router was a nightmare.
4. I've had to replace both the PCMCIA card and the router.
5. It still only works whimsically.
6. I have yet to see drivers designed so unprofessionally.
7. I have yet to see a router's web interface so poorly designed
8. Linksys tech support [stinks].
9. Linksys online knowledge base is a joke.
10. Unlike other reviews you may have read, I actually bought [this], and I do not work for Linksys, or any other competing company.
11. Do yourself a favor, get a different product.

Have a nice day ;)

Summary: Terrific Intro into wireless networking
Review: I purchased this equipment to allow me the freedom to roam all over the house with my notebook. I was worried about setting it up as I am not the most savy computer guy. Lo and behold, 10 minutes and I'm surfing the net! I used the set up cdrom which completed the task perfectly. My broadband company is Comcast and I have a generic PIII notebook. Unlike some folks have reported, I am able to use my Zone Alarm freebie firewall on my XP Home OS. Thank you Linksys!

Summary: Order of start-up is important. Small problem w/ signal loss
Review: I bought this AP/Router with the associated Linksys WPC54G card. I have a Sony Vaio laptop and desktop PC both running WinXP SP1. The installation was easy, though the order that the devices are turned on is extremely important; modem> WRT54G router> PCs, must be followed. You should also wait for each device to run through diagnostics or establish a connection before turning on the next device. I didn't use the supplied CD for installation but used the web based application. Setup was pretty straight forward. For PPoE, remember that the username includes the domain name and you should know your DSL DNS numbers.

I did have a small problem with the wireless signal being cutoff every 3 minutes. This is because of IEE 802.1x being enabled by WindowsXP. Everytime I changed the SSID XP would default to enabling it. I have posted how to check if this is enabled under the review of the WPC54G card. 802.1x is the IEEE standard for port controlled client/server authentication and most home networks won't have this kind of security. XP does not support pass phrase for the WEP 128 encryption so you must manually input the 26 hexidecimal key. What is not stated in the instructions is that the key can have the letters A-F, numbers 0-9 and some symbols.

For security, change the SSID to something obscure and don't braodcast it. Also change the password for the router and enable WEP 128 encryption. Furthermore, you may want to enable MAC filtering so only designated PCs have access to your wireless network. If you need proof that security is important do a net search for "war flying in San Diego".

Summary: Free of lan cables finially!!
Review: After considerable research and asking around, I thought this router was the most dependable and easy to setup. I considered the D-Link but had my doubts.

I had this setup in 10mins flat with the quick start guide that was provided. For those of you who have SBC/Ameritech's Yahoo DSL and are wondering if this work with PPPoE, it does!! I must admit that was my biggest fear. Now I don't need any of other the Yahoo clunky software on my machines to connect to the net.

Is this worth it compared to the 802.11b? That's a questions of your to answer. I felt it was worth the investment to go with more speed between my machine, that might not necessarily be the case for you. The B routers are approximately half the price as I write this and operate at the same frequency, so you really aren't missing too much with them.

Summary: Easy to use
Review: Although I have a good knowledge of computers, I usually rely on my techie friends to help me put stuff like this together. When weeks passed and I still couldnt get one of them to help, I decided to tackle it myself. I could believe how simple it was. I hooked the router up in the step by step fashion that was described, and inserted the disk which did the rest. Now was the hard part, or so I thought: to connect the wireless card to a desktop 3 flights up. I do offer a caveat for those who are doing so, insert the software, and then the card. I did the opposite, and it took a couple of resets to get it going. After that, voila, instant connection. The signal bar is usually a half to 3/4ths full and the internet functions fine. I was impressed how easy it was, and reccomend this product. Although we have many types of cordless phone frequencies (900, 2.4) I didnt get to see if there were any major disturbances in the signal. So I would have to say it was a pretty easy installation, and Im quite pleased with the results.

Summary: Wonderful product
Review: Just installed this wireless access point/router over the weekend and am amazed at it. Set up took a little extra time because I did not have an ethernet card/connection between my laptop and the router (also because I am not terribly tech-savy). Instead, I had to configure the router after I installed my wireless card--a little challenging since the since the Web based configuration was tough to access without a wireless network already operational. Once I got past that little hurdle, set-up was quick. The only other glitch happened when I turned on the encryption and changed the SSID. I forgot to copy the key generated by the encryption program and could not access the router without it. However, 10 minutes on the phone with Customer Support (at 1:30 a.m. no less) solved the problem.

Range is fantastic. The router is in my basement and I have excellent reception throught my woodframe house, including in our bedroom on the 2nd floor on the other side of the house. No dropped signals, no interference, no problems.

I would highly recommend this product to anyone interested in going wireless.

FYI-I am using an old Dell Inspiron 3700 laptop (450mhz PII) with 96 mb RAM and operating on Windows XP. Am planning on adding my work laptop (Dell C400) to the wireless network as soon as new chip arrives.
