Rating: Summary: Dismal range! Review: I live in a mere 800 square feet apartment, yet this router seems to have a working range of barely 15 feet. As soon as I take the laptop around the corner out of my bedroom and into the living room, the Internet connection is lost. And this is with me placing the router a full 9 feet (the length of my USB cables between the router and my desktop) away from my PC towards the door going to my living room. The professional technician who installed the router and network card spent about 5 hours trying to tweak it, including downloading updated firmware from Linksys, but to no avail. Finally he said that the signal just couldn't penetrate the two walls (bedroom and kitchen, kitchen and living room) it needs to get to the laptop! He hinted, but wouldn't explicitly state, that this is just what you get with this G-protocol, the B-protocol is has better range but slower speeds. I'll call Linksys customer service about this tomorrow, but right now am very, very disappointed considering that this G-protocol equipment is much pricier than the B- stuff. I could perhaps have had the bad luck to purchase a lemon, but somehow I doubt it. Buyer beware!
Rating: Summary: Very poor quality product Review: I bought this product in Sep. 13. Unfortunately, I got very bad experience in this product. The following is the letter I set to Linksys and hope can let you know what the situation I met. Sir, I don't know whether you have found the fail rate of your WRT54G 802.11g wireless router is very high recently. I and my colleague bought 2 WRT54G 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately, both of us meet some critical issue in your product. The following is the problems I met. 1. WRT54G can't access to internet through wireless connection. I've set down the PPPoE setup of the this device. But, after I turn on the wireless router, my laptop can't connect to the internet. While enter the setup function through 192.168.1.1, the internet status is shown "disconnected". Even I click the "connect" button, it still can't connect to the internet. After then, I turn on my desktop PC which is connected to WRT54G through wired connection. Strangely, it can access the internet. And my laptop can access the internet after the desktop turned on. Of course, the connection status shown in setup page is "connected". 2. WRT54G can't work In above issue, I think maybe I can solve the problem by upgrading firmware. Hence, I download the latest version firmware (wrt54g_1412.bin) through your website and run the upgrade function through my laptop (which is connect to WRT54G through wireless). But, the setup page hanged after the upgrade process complete. And my laptop can't connect to WRT54G. After then, I turn on my desktop and found desktop can link to internet and the firmware is updated to 1.412. All of this were done in the day before yesterday. Yesterday, I think maybe I should update the firmware once again to insure it's upgraded correctly. I upgrade the firmware again from desktop (again, it's connect to WRT54G through a LAN wire). It seems this upgrade process is OK, but, the WRT54G seem got critical problem. Not only I can't access the internet from my desktop, my laptop can't find any wireless signal! In other word, My laptop can't find any access point around it even the WRT54G is on and there is less than 3 feet between this two devices ! I feel very strange about this issue and check out with the LEDs on this device. I observed only the power LED has very weak light. There are no other light from other LEDs. Even though I've try to reset this device by pushing the reset button in the back, but it still doesn't work. After turning off for several minutes, I turned on the WRT54G again and it seems the LEDs are working correctly, but, I still can't access to internet even though my laptop has found the WRT54G but still can't connect with. And, most worsely, I even can't access the 192.168.1.1 setup page no matter from the desktop or laptop! Please help me to solve this problems ASAP. Considering with the fail rate is 100% we met, I hope you should have a very serious attitude to deal with this issue. The following is my environment information and hope it's useful to you to solve this problem 1.Laptop: IBM X22, with D-Link DWL-650+ wireless NIC. running Windows XP system. 2.Desktop: Windows 98SE system. And link to the WRT54G through LAN wire.
Rating: Summary: Easy Setup & Works Great Review: Easy (much improved) Setup, I attached Wireless G Notebook Card and took notebook out of house , It worked great outside the House, Even my neighbour could see my Wireless Connection on his PC using his Wireless Card. Only you need to make sure you change all default settings to keep you network private.
Rating: Summary: great but not with airport extreme Review: This is a great product, but it is a total pain to get to work with the newest Airport Extreme cards. You basically have to cripple the top speed which is fine with a DSL line, but with a T1, or cable modem buy something else
Rating: Summary: dont buy this ! Review: I bought one and its inpossible to use. I couldnt get the WLAN to work. When I plugged in the power , after 10 seconds the router would lose the WLAN mac address and then no wireless clients could connect anymore. The linksys people were clueless also , the sent me 3 different firmwares, but none worked ( even beta ones). In the end I returned the product
Rating: Summary: Mediocre WiFi Router Review: Having experience with b routers, when I first bought this I was dissapointed with the range. Out of the box, it works fine, but when you configure security settings, that's when the problems start. Also, the router does not support tools I depend on like Remote Desktop Sharing, Netmeeting, Windows Messenger and etc. I returned it for a NetGear WGR614 and am much happier.
Rating: Summary: Better than the wireless B router that I had... Review: Got this 2 days after I had ordered... Very timely and wonderful of Amazon to ship it out so fast. So, I plugged the WRT54G in and it did not work right away. But I realized in my haste, I didnt install the CD. So, after I inserted the installation CD everything worked fine. I was getting 54mbps and was flying on my notebook w/ a G pci card). But after a couple hours of tinkering w/ it, I kept getting dropped from my connection w/ the router. (trust me this is very annoying, especially if you are trying to take an online exam for school) So I called Linksys Tech and they didnt know what was going on, all they did was read from a pre-written script. So, what I did was tried using different frequencies and it did the trick. Of course I still get dropped occassionally but not as often, I can live w/ this. Remember, first thing you should do is enable WEP & dont broadcast SSID & change ur SSID name & change ur router password. Overall I really like this item, its much more stable than the linksys BEFW11S4 router that I had previously. Just remember to go to Linksys' site and flash ur router. Hope this helps someone who is on the fence about this product. Oh yeah and recently PCMag reviewed this router and it was their "Editors Choice"...
Rating: Summary: Easy to set up, easy to use! Review: I have to concur with the reviewer who said the WRT54G was really easy to install. As a "wired" home networker with the older, land-line 10/100 Linksys router, I've been eyeing the wireless set for some time. Well, recently I had occasion to pick up the wireless router, and have been very happy with it. Installation was a breeze; I just swapped out my old router with the wireless one. A couple more minutes tweaked out the WEP settings, 128bit encryption, the whole 9 yards. A few more minutes to configure the wireless connection and I was up and running. As I sit in my kitchen a floor and 20' feet away, I have excellent signal strength, even though the furnace and water heater (and gobs knows how much other stuff) are interposed. I'm running XP pro on a Dell Inspiron Laptop, fyi.
Rating: Summary: Piece of Cake Review: We bought this router because we recently bought a Macintosh iBook and wanted to share the internet and printer with a HP Windows ME Desktop PC. The linksys install CD gave us simple step by step directions on hooking up the cable modem to the router, and then the router to the PC. It didn't work the first time, but after a simple reboot of the PC, it worked like a charm. We then installed the airport card into the iBook and it prompted if we wanted to use Linksys. A couple of yes clicks and it worked like a charm. Our next step is to hookup the printer, but we need an eithernet cable. Not sure how that will work, but everything to this point was simple.
Rating: Summary: One star is too generous Review: I just returned mine today after spending a week trying to get it to maintain connectivity to the other PCs and to my cable modem. I called tech support a total of 5 times. I upgraded the firmware, reflashed it, changed the internal network address, changed the MTU setting, and changed the broadcast setting. This was all done while connected to my wired PC. Nothing worked for more than a few minutes. Tech support, being out of solutions, gave up and finally said it was defective. I was more than happy to return it. I don't think mine was defective. I think the product itself is worthless.
