Rating: Summary: Works as advertized Review: I've had zero problems with this product or the 54g wireless adapter. I also own the Lynksys eatherfast broadband modem. No problems.I am a newbe to networking, but this was a piece of cake to set up. Read the directions and follow them. I read reviews here and was alittle worryied. But as I said I had no problems. Signal strength is excellent through out my 2000SF house and beyond.
Rating: Summary: Perfect Review: I get this device recently, it is good enough for my small business needs, one PC and three notebooks, but I did not test its range till now and I did not find it too in any technical details.
Rating: Summary: Buying the damn thing Review: I can't find the add to cart button. The page needs some design help. The product may be fine, but I can't buy the damn thing!
Rating: Summary: Great Product Review: I used to have a plain old Linksys BEFSR41 EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100 Switch, I decided with my addition of a new laptop to the house (for a total of 3 laptops and 4 desktops) that I should try out this whole wireless bit. I picked up the WRT54G, and WOW...I plugged it in, rebooted my computers, and everything worked with no setup needed...I tweaked a few settings, set up some security on it...but other than that it's very simple to use, and I was even able to link my old router to this one to add an additional set of ports to use if needed in the future.
Rating: Summary: Buy another brand Review: Linksys products just don't last. They usually work well in the beginning but then fail after a short time. Registering the product with them is a waste of time. They won't honor their warranty without the original store receipt. There are no exceptions. I bought the WRT54G when it first came out. It lasted two weeks. Linksys replaced it (making me pay shipping) and now that one is on the fritz. After having multiple failures with Linksys products (Router, Wireless PCMCIA card, wireless Printserver) I've given up on them. Yes, they're usually the first to hit the market but their products are crap and you're better off waiting for SMC, Netgear, D-Link or even Microsoft to come out with a similar product.
Rating: Summary: WRT54G Rev1.1 a Step Down Review: I purchased a WRT54G (v1.1) with modest expectations on installation. I'm no novice to PC installations. Unfortunately I ran into problems. After working on the installation for ~1 hr. I contacted Linksys. After ~30 min. of (good) support I was asked for the version number. It turns out that the latest model version (v 1.1) doesn't work with my DSL modem - Westell Wirespeed. Linksys has been aware of the problem. << This revision is a step back..>> I was assured by Linksys that the earlier WRT54G version would work. I hope to get the chance. PLEASE Note: Before purchasing this product .. contact Linksys.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Choice Review: First of all, I am not a techie. I was very reluctant to purchase a router. But I could not connect my work laptop to the internet directly using my DSL modem because of a conflict with the software that my ISP provided. A techie at work recommended the WRT54G but it took a while for me to decide to order it. I wish I hadn't waited so long! I placed my order with amazon on Tuesday September 30th and received my router on Friday October 3rd - very quick shipment considering it was free. I took the router out of the box, followed the quick installation and had the wireless connection working within 15 minutes. I could also use VPN to connect to work using both ethernet and my wireless card. I would recommend going to the Linksys website to get tips on securing your wireless network. Definitely change the SSID, disable the SSID broadcast, and enable MAC filtering. I couldn't be more pleased with the ease of setup or performance of the WRT54G.
Rating: Summary: Don't waste your time. Review: Life is too short to deal with the horrible customer service provided by Linksys. I bought this product and had trouble setting up my network. I called the customer support department, and after waiting on hold for 40 minutes, I was told "Sorry, can't help you. We are not specialized enough to help you with a network,"! Not only that, but they couldn't even give me a number for someone who could. Unbelievable. This wireless network had replaced a Dell wireless network and I am sorry I ever changed. Dell really does have the best customer service department in the industry. Again, don't waste your time with Linksys.
Rating: Summary: WRT54G v1.1 is much better then v1.0! Review: First thing I did was updating the firmware. It has very good router features as well as wireless security features. Setting up the newest WPA is easy. Go to the cnet.com to read about the wireless security issue you will know that WEP is not secure and WPA is so much better and will become the new standard. I was very pleased that the newest version of the firmware includes WPA. The phone support is 24/7 and you will get a real tech support person online which is very rare these days. And believe me you could use a lot of them if you are new to wireless or like to try out different settings (like me). Also their WebChat works pretty responsive as well. My Panasonic 2.4GHz cordless phone kills the connection every time. Changing the channels on the WRT54G and the clients won't help because the phone changes its channel automatically. I had a hell of time to get the wireless to work when I was talking to Linksys tech rep using my 2.4GHz phone. I was so discouraged I was ready to return the whole thing until I talked to another tech rep and he asked me right away if I was using a 2.4GHz phone. Once I switched to a 900MHz phone we were fine. I guess if my nerghbors start to use 2.4GHz cordless phone I will be in trouble. Now the only but nevertheless not so small problem is the short range. I read the reviews here and on cnet.com about its short range. I was hoping the newest firmware would fix the problem but it didn't. There is an interesting thing though: When I was registering the WRT54G online with Linksys, it asked me to choose if mine was WRT54G v1.0 or WRT54G v1.1 which indicates there are two versions of the box. When I chatted with the Linksys support, he claimed there were only firmware differences. If anyone knows there is an actual newer hardware version of it, please let me know, I can still exchange it. Note: On 9/16/2003, Linksys' web site has changed WRT54G's product description (you have to go the product tab->wireless router to see the new WRT54G) which added WPA feature. ...which shows different pictures of v1.0 and v1.1. Base on that picture one can easily conclude that there are hardware changes, at least the front panel LEDs are all different, besides added Cisco logo. Well, I have to hope the new hardwere solves the range problem. If that's the case, I will change my rating to 5 stars! 10/4/03: I got the newer v1.1 which has the Cisco logo and different LEDs. It not just has longer range, it also stays connected much better even with my 2.4Ghz cordless phone on. With the older verion, the Linksys WPC54G worked OK but I was having frequent connection dropped problem with my Gigafast WF721-AEX 802.11b card. Once I switched to v1.1, the Gigafast stays up like a rock. I am changing my rating from 3 stars to 5 stars. Note: The UPC codes of the both versions are the same.
Rating: Summary: Power-up (weak LED) problem solved Review: I discovered an issue with my WRT54G that confused me, but is easily solved... This was the issue of the power LED being on very dimly, and the router being nonfunctional. This SEEMS to happen if you power the unit off and back on again rapidly.. Apparently Linksys didn't design the thing to do a proper reset unless it's off for quite a while (a full minute will do it... your mileage may vary at 5-10 seconds). I almost returned the unit because of this... actually went to bed planning to do so, but the next day when I plugged it in, it was fine! I fiddled around with it and found I could reproduce the "problem" by unplugging and replugging the unit, but it would come up correctly if it was powered off longer. (It's been running fine for weeks now - but I suppose a short power glitch might leave it nonfunctional, at least until it is powered off for a longer period of time). Linksys really should have made the unit do a full reset when it hits a power glitch, because a short power glitch causes the unit to go into "never never land", and this makes the unit appear to be broken. See also my note about checking the "channel" on both the router and interface cards (under WMP54G) if you're having problems getting the unit to connect correctly... that one ran me nuts too. Getting these things going was nontrivial, but finally everything is working fine (one laptop / two desktops all running XP, +WRT54G). Kids are thrilled!
