Summary: Why all the complaints?
Review: I must admit, I am quite amused by some of the negative comments about this product. OK, so maybe some people were unlucky and received faulty equipment out of the box. Maybe Linksys tech support is as bad as some people suggest. I wouldn't know - I use only Linksys networking equipment in my home office, but I've never had any reason to contact them, the stuff just works! This unit is no exception, it has been doing what it is supposed to do from day one, without any problems. The point is, setting up a wireless network is a little more involved than, say, plugging in a printer - I suspect a lot of negative comments about this unit stem from people simply not taking enough time to read the instructions and understand what they are trying to accomplish.

So yes, this unit is great! I'm running a mix of PCI and PCMCIA wireless units, both B and G, and after two months have never had a single problem. I have one desktop right at the other end of the house buried inside the bottom area of a computer desk, the signal strength used to be marginal - fixed this by making up a 4ft coax extension cable with the proper connectors to lift the antenna on the PCI card up to desk level. Problem solved, the signal strength is excellent and the network connection runs at full 54Mb/s all the time.

I highly recommend this product.

Summary: This router isn't worth the plastic it's housed in.
Review: Where do I begin?

I am currently college student and I consider myself to be extremely computer literate. I purchased this router less than a month ago and have been on the verge of wanting to strangle Linksys ever since.

The plan was for our apartment to be set up completely wirelessly. I have 3 roomates with laptops, and I myself am on a desktop. They all purchased Linksys wireless G network adaptors and I purchased a Linksys WET11 wireless B external ethernet adaptor (I was weary of the poor Linksys G adaptor reviews). Initially everything appeared to be working great. I literally just plugged my WET11 into my computer and it began receiving the signal from the router. After the adaptor installation on the laptops, my roomates were connected likewise.

Then I changed the SSID, and hid the broadcast. Immediately we ran into problems on the laptops. On 2 of them it took a good 10 minutes for them to connect up with the hidden SSID, and on the 3rd one it would simply connect for about 5 seconds and then disconnect. Extremely frustrating. A few days later I began have connection problems on all the systems.

To make a long, tedious story short, they all ended up returning their network adaptors, buying CAT5 cable, and plugging their laptops directly into the back of the router. Being as my computer and desk are a good 30-40 feet from the router with no forseeable way to run a wire to it, I have remained wireless. To maintain "better" connectivity I've had to broadcast the SSID and turn off WEP (so long protection). And to say the connectivity I get with this thing is pathetic would be a gross understatement.

For no apparent reason the router will stop broadcasting. Then it will start again for a minute. Then it will stop. Then it will start again for a minute. Then it will stop for 5. Then I will walk over to it with a hammer and it will start broadcasting again. Then it will work for 10 hours. Then it won't work for 5 hours. Then it will give me IP conflicts. Then I will set up static IPs. Then it will give me IP conflicts. Then it will stop. Then it will start again without IP conflicts. Then it will run fine for the rest of the day. Then maybe that night it will start going on and off again. Then I will begin to roll up into a ball and cry.

AND ALL THIS TIME IT GOES ABOUT 3-10x SLOWER THAN A HARDWIRE.

I have no cordless phone. I have no possible forms of interference. I have the router in an open area with line of site to my adaptor. Countless hours of tweaking, repositioning, reseting, and firware upgrades have yielded no permanent fix. Linksys tech support? hahahahahahahahahahahaha

This product is a disgrace. Please, anyone reading this... STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM LINKSYS WIRELESS PRODUCTS AS POSSIBLE. You have been warned.

Summary: Good luck with encryption using this router!
Review: I've had problems with this router and also the BEFW11S4 router using encryption. The current WRT54G router is version 1.1 and has the Cisco Systems logo.

Without encryption, the system works perfectly. With encryption, you will have problems with DHCP, but you can connect to the router. The router will drop your connect every couple of minutes at the minimum. The only real "security" you have is to enable mac filtering to keep others out of your lan, but as for your transmissions, its not very secure. I've had this problem with my Dell 1300 wireless card in my laptop, belkin USB wireless adapter and others. Maybe some other wireless cards may work flawless, but I had very little success with linksys using encryption.

If you don't need security, this router will work great. If you are worried about security, this router might not be ready yet. Hopefully, future firmwares will make the router more stable, but the last firmware update was 4 months ago from Linksys. Don't hold your breath too long. I've always like linksys's wired routers, but their wireless routers has been unreliable. In terms of marketing, their previous router version 1.0 was marketed with simple port filtering. Now their box claims the router is a SPI firewall. I really don't know how true that is.

Summary: Stay away, far away
Review: In three months, have had four Linksys routers, and three adapters due to faulty equipment. It took hours on the phone with abrasive, sarcastic tech support to figure this out. And, to add insult to injury, it's a toll call to get authorization to send this (...) back. Stay away from Linksys.

Summary: Stay away from Linksys
Review: This equipment and customer service does not warrent a star. In three months, am on my fourth router and third adapter. Customer service has been argumentative and impossible to reach (maybe that's a good thing!). And, to add insult to injury, they charge you to call them and request authorization to return their junk!

Summary: Solid as a rock
Review: I bot a Dell 2300 truemobile G/B wireless router with my Dell laptop equipped with a Dell 1300 truemobile wireless adaptor. The 2300 crashes every few hours if WPA is selected. When WEP or no security is selected, it crashes anyway and requires a reboot once to twice a day. Sometimes, even wired computer loses internet connection with no apparent reason. Returned it and bot a linksys. Solid as a rock. Extremely easy to setup. Setup WPA-PSK, MAC filtering and no SSID boardcast without even using the user guide on the CD.
However, it lacks the parental control functions and the handsome look of the dell router. again, what good is it if the router is not reliable?
Highly Recommended.

Summary: Migrated from wired linksys router with no problems
Review: I was using a Linksys BEFSR41 wired router and decided to split my home office into 2 chunks .. 1 room with my 2 PCs and the other room was for my wife and her Mac G3. It gave me the excuse to upgrade to wireless; got the WRT54G and a Belkin USB wireless adaptor and had the whole shebang up and running in about 1 hour.. Actually that's not really fair to the Linksys equipment because I spent most of the time fiddling around with the belkin setup on the mac ( admittedly not a system I use very frequently). I locked the linksys to the mac for the mac ( pun intended ), enabled WEP encryption and it works fine. For some reason the belkin was not responding to a non-broadcasted SSID ( had to really fiddle around with the mac tcp/ip settings here ).. I need to look at this some other time, but again the fault was with the mac software setup for the belkin device; the Linksys works perfectly... and it's got those funky cool "Lost in space" antennae to boot!

Summary: What Now
Review: I received the Linksys for a gift when RCN of New Jersey was my internet provider. It was wonderful. Worked like a charm. Now that Patriot Media took over, they will not allow me to use the Linksys. Patriot Media says using Linksys is theft of their services!! Make sure your internet provider will allow you to use the Linksys before you buy one!!!

Summary: Poor Performance & Customer Service
Review: I purchased this product along with their PCI adapter. First, I purchased the wireless B products (router & USB adapter), but 90% of the time, it didn' work. Even when I was able to get Internet connection, it's slower than dial up, and I have cable Internet. I turned off my cell phone, cordless phone, TV, and radio, but it was still crawling.

I called Linksys customer service, and after about an hour, they told me to return the products to the store. I exchanged it with the wireless G router and PCI adapter based on the recommendation of the store employee.

The first wireless G adapter I purchased did not even work in the setup. After about an hour and a half with Linksys customer service, they told me to exchange this product. At this point, I'm already very upset since this is the second time I have to exchange the product, but I thought I should give it another try. So I went back to the store and exchanged the router and adapter.

I tried again, the wireless function did not work, called Linksys customer service again, and after 40 minutes of waiting and 2 hours on the phone with an incompetent service rep who continued to skip steps, the Linksys customer service rep told me to exchange the products.

I can honestly say that I will never purchase any Linksys product again. If the product doesn't work once, that's understable. If it doesn't work after 3 tries and the customer service keeps on recommending to exchange the product, it's just not acceptable. I recommend staying away from any of the Linksys wireless products, and if you're brave enough, make sure to keep your receipt!

Summary: great router for its price
Review: Installation and configuration took me two whole days because i am a novice and didn't know that the router and pc card should be on the same channel, you should also enable WEP, otherwise filesharing won't work. Once I made it work, it works just great with Linksys WPC54 G Notebook adaptor. great speed and range. one other problem which is not linksys's fault is getting disconnect while someone is using wireless phone or cell phone. this is because they operate on the same frequency.the solution is to buy a A access point which its price is double as this(not a good solution,is it?)
