Summary: Wireless connection drops every five minutes
Review: I bought this product along with a corresponding PC Card (both LinkSys). Since LinkSys is owned by Cisco, I figured I couldn't go wrong. The rebate made it even more attractive.

I got the router set up in 10 minutes, and was surfing fine from my desktop (which was wired to the router). I had good speed and no real problems when using my desktop.

The wireless aspect, however, was not so good. The setup for a wireless connection was routine. The instructions were good and I was able to 'see' the access point almost right away. The trouble I had was maintaining a connection.

I was consistently connecting at maximum 'g' speed, but the connection would drop every five minutes (almost to the second). Right in the middle of surfing, I would lose the connection and have to sign-in again. Over the course of an hour, it happened 12 times. So, I went through the setup process again to see if I missed anything. The next hour, it happened 12 times again.

Range and speed worked as advertised. It just only works for five minutes at a time. As I've been looking around the Internet to see if other people are experiencing similar things, it seems I am not alone.

Summary: excellent range and performance
Review: I replaced my D-link 802.11b router because it could not hold a connection continuously. See my other reviews for the details. I also wanted to switch to Broadcom hardware (which the linksys uses) because my WiFi MiniPCI card in my dell laptop with lucent silicon in it used 70% of my 1.2Ghz laptop's CPU when using the wireless at full speed. This is because the Lucent drivers use PIO whereas the Broadcom drivers use DMA. I am not sure if this is still the case with lucent drivers.

The new linksys set up immediately. I ran my speed test program and was able to get 2400+ kbytes/second thruput with the linksys, using 64 bit WEP encryption, all with less than 5% CPU. That's more than 4x the best speed I was able to get with the 802.11B device with encryption turned OFF!

I use the device more like a wireless hub, not in router mode, since my internet connection is no where near the middle of the house where I want the wireless access point to be. I had one problem after I upgraded the firmware which I think was caused by some important parameter in the device being changed after the upgrade. I am not sure about it. I had to go back up into the attic and connect with a wire before I could get it working again.

Oh, and don't ever do what I did: do not ever upgrade the firmware over a wireless connection! What I was thinking I do not know - I am lucky I didn't lose the connection halfway through and render the device useless.

This device never drops connections, so I stay logged into Windows Messenger continuously.

Great product, no problems. Not even sure why I upgraded the firmware. I am running 1.42.2.

Good luck!

Summary: Boost your range with new antennae
Review: The setup of this router was great, but I wasn't getting good connections. My 54g PCI card two floors directly below the router would occaisionally get no connection and was usually in the <5 Mbps and "Weak" or worse. My laptop with and 11Mbps card wouldn't get any reception on the first floor. I got upgraded antennae and they made a huge difference. I now get speeds from 11-48Mbps with an average around 24 and signal strength of "Good" or better.

Summary: DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT
Review: 12+ hrs of telephone support over 4 nights to get it to work-- turns out the internet port was broken. So much for quality control. Next one worked for 3 months, then died. 4 more hours on with tech support over 2 nights... they can't diagnose if it's the access point or the wireless PC card. So, I'm going to either return it to Linksys if they will refund it, or I'm going to put it in the middle of the road and watch a bus run over it. The SINGLE worst product and worst company I've ever had the displeasure of running into. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. You'll waste more time than you have.

Summary: Had a horrible experience with this product
Review: I bought this router and I would get signal only about 25% of the time no matter how close I was to the base. After numerous calls to Linksys, I returned it and got a new one as they told me the only explanation was that it was damaged. However, the same problem occured. I would get signal and a minute later, I would lose signal. Their customer service people had no idea what to do and told me other people's router were crowding my signal (I live in New York City). This, however was not acceptable so I returned it for a Netgear - half the cost and works 100x better. Avoid Linkys.

Summary: Is G really that much better than B?
Review: I bought this to replace my Linksys BEFW11S4 - 802.11b wireless router (I gave the old router to a friend - it worked great) because I thought it would be a nice upgrade in speed and performance - WRONG! I can't notice any difference - except it used to drop my connection several times an hour! After upgrading the drivers and firmware a few times and e-mailing tech support for some setting tips it now works fine. If you currently own a wireless router (802.11b) don't rush to replace it! As far as Linksys goes, I have used several of their products and they seem to hold up well - no problems.

Summary: Do not buy it !
Review: Product does not work out of the box.
I had to call Linksys twice. On hold for technical support, each time for 20-25 minutes.
Setup wizard is confusing.
This product is not for novices.

Summary: Wireless G less
Review: I have been very unhappy with the product. The distance I get is maybe 15 feet from the access point in spite of every effort to move everything around, change channels, stand on my head...

The range worked for maybe a week. I live in a small 3 bedroom but forget getting any signal outside the office. There needs to be some sort of booster, otherwise this was a waste of money. I now use [a wireless interent service] when I leave the office with the laptop.

Summary: good as long as it lasts
Review: OK I had 2-month happy experience with this router. Under intensive usage, it never losts connection, never resets. With the newest firmware, the b devices and g devices work together very well. I can at least hit 1.6MByte/s throughput on my g devices when b devices are working too. 128bit WEP works well with my multiple devices, a wireless-g laptop and a 802.11b PDA

the bad: After 2 months, the router is dead. The Diag red light is solid on. Reset, no response. Try to re-flash the firmware, no luck since ethernet is down. Now I have to pay shipping by myself and get a replacement. Who knows how long the replacement will work...

Summary: Great purchase!
Review: I bought this router and also the WPC54G for my Thinkpad. I have the router connected to my ADSL modem, and wired to my desktop PC. It was easy to configure, and I was surfing the web from my laptop in no time. I upgraded the router firmware and the WPC54G driver following the simple instructions from www.linksys.com
The speed is impressive. I'm 40ft from the router, in a different floor, with a transfer rate of 36Mbps.
I've been using it everyday for almost 2 months now, and I'm really satisfied with it.
