Rating: Summary: Outstanding exterior design and user interface Review: I have tried two other wireless routers and have found that the NetGear MR814 to be an outstanding product. The first thing you will notice is the sleek and pleasant design. This router can be proudly displayed next to your computer (or family pictures) and not hidden away under desk. The router can be placed both vertically (with an included stand) or horizontally. However, getting past the cosmetics, you will find the installation guide and help features of this router to be just as pleasing as the exterior. The folks at NetGear did an excellent job in making the router easy to set up for ANY skill level. All of the features (security etc.) are explained in simple (but not moronic) terms that are easy to follow and quick to implement.
Rating: Summary: Apple Airport Base Station Alternative Review: I have an Apple iBook with an Airport card. I bought this Netgear Router for 1/4 the price of the Apple Airport base station and it was plug-n-play! Using MacOS X there is no software to install. You use Internet Explorer with a HTML-based "wizard" to help you configure the Mac and change the router's settings. You do have to make some changes in the Network System Preference panel. I created two new "Locations," one for an Ethernet connection to the router, and another for an Airport wireless connection.
Rating: Summary: Firmware bugs, slows outlook and close connection for telnet Review: If you just use internet explorer, outlook express, the router is OK. But please read the following firmware errors I found and discussed with a senior technicion.1. I am using SSL(port 995) for outlook express. The securing process is much slower than when I was using the D-Link DI-704P router. The technician said it was because of the biult-in firewall in the router. 2. In a telnet, ssh window, if you just idle for a few minutes, the connection will be closed. He said that it was also because of the firewall that will close the connection when it detects idling. He said there is no way you can turn off the firewall. 3. I installed the software firewall, and I found it not very customarizable and you may not be able to open a specific port such as port 6000 for X11. The speed is fine. Even a junior technician told me it is 10M half Duplex. My conclusion is that you shouldn't buy it if you use telnet, ssh, or telnetd, sshd. If you don't use them, it is a OK router.
Rating: Summary: flawless install Review: This router installed beautifully w/ my Motorola Cable modem and Win XP Pro. I didn't need the install software and in fact I didn't have to change any software settings in XP since it configures itself. This puppy just works! I also need a router to use w/ my XBox Live service and this works just fine. I recommend this to anyone looking for a quality WiFi router.

Rating: Summary: Great Product Review: I bought the MR814 along with the MA401 wireless card. Had it up and running in 15 mins on my Compaq presario laptop with Win 2000. Range and signal strength are great so far, and I dont have a 2.4 Ghz phone, so no worries on that front. I like the 128 bit security and free firewall license as well. I am planning to shift to XP in some time, and I'm hoping I won't have too many problems with that. Great product for the ultra cheap price, though.
Rating: Summary: You Buy it !! You Love it !! Review: This is my first wireless router (thanks to Amazon.com for giving me at such a low price). I still can't digest how could I get such a wonderful product for [so cheap]. You dont have to do anything. Just plug it in and reset your cable/DSL modem. It does the magic. I was up with wireless in less than 15 minutes. I have also bought MA401 pc card to go along with it. Both made a nice pair (Dont have to look at 1-800 customer number). I setup my own network name and 128 bit wep encryption and personal firewall provided free with router. All up in less than 15-20 minutes. Good Luck
Rating: Summary: Great Value Review: The Netgear MR814 is a great value for this price range. This router took almost no configuring to set up. I have 3 desktops (win 98se, win2k) plugged into the ethernet ports and 2 laptops (win 98, mac os x) and 2 pocket pcs connected wirelessly with 128bit encryption. My only complaints are that it doesn't have SPI for better security, but it does come with firewall software for PCs (but there is no version for Macintosh). Also, there is no built in print server. If you are looking for these features check out the SMC SMC7004VWBR Barricade Wireless 4-Port Cable/DSL Router. Overall, the ease of setup and flexibility make it one of the best values in it's price range.
Rating: Summary: Excellent wireless range, better than Dlink DI-713P Review: I tried both a Dlink DI-713P and a 3com 3CRWE747A wireless unit, and I have to say that I highly recommend this Netgear product. It has an excellent wireless range in comparison. The interface is easy to use and supports some really convenient features -- if your wireless devices are connected, you can select them from a list of "allowed clients" instead of having to enter the MAC addresses from each wireless unit by hand. Very convenient. It is also nice to have a full 4 port switch. Overall, excellent design. I like the built-in wall mounts, which work OK with push-pins.
Rating: Summary: Best value and Excellent performance + Wireless Range Review: I bought this product from Amazon for $[$$] after MIR. I was able to setup network within 20 minutes. Configuration menu is very simple and gives lot of options. Wireless range is excellent. I am able to connect from my neighbor's home which is 500ft away. I live in two story house and connect from anywhere. No dropping of packets. 100% signal strength throughout house. After reading few bad reviews about this product on CNET, I was little hesitated to buy it. But after using it now i see why it is editor's choice for home networking. No problem with VPN passthrough. I strongly recommend using this product and enjoy wireless connectivity. I bought TRENDnet wireless pcmcia card ...on thanksgiving sale. It works fine. Good luck to everyone.
