Summary: Most excellent product
Review: I had my cable company come in the morning to hook me up and then I attached my 814 router to the cable modem and my computer
came right up! I put in the CD-ROM and the wizard basically said Hey, you're already connected. It was amazing. The most quick and painless installation of hardware/software I have ever encountered. I also used Netgear's MA311 PCI cards on two of my computers: both the signal strength and link quality are great, with the router 2 floors below the computers.

My advice: buy this along with Netgear PCI or USB cards. I initially tried to hook up Linksys PCI cards with the Netgear router; after spending ALL day with Linksys tech support to no avail, I went out and bought the Netgear PCI cards which came up right after installation. I am most pleased with both Netgear products

Summary: Returned it
Review: Although the web page had mentioned a mail-in rebate, there was no coupon with the product when I received it. I figured no big deal, the price is still reasonable.

I tried to set the unit up with a wired PC first to establish an internet connection but without success. I then went back to my old D-Link DI-804 wired-only router and was back online within two minutes. That convinced me that there was no problem with my cable modem, computer or ethernet cables. I double checked some more. I really wanted the MR814 to work. I liked it's looks and small form factor. As a final effort, I called Netgear tech support and after going through several menu choices I was told by a recording that I would be transferred. I was transferred to a busy signal and then the call dropped.

I concluded that I had a bad unit. Based on other reviewer's feedback, that's a pretty common occurance no matter who the manufacturer. My experience with technical support also seemed to be similar to others regardless who the manufacturer happened to be. My advice to others is that you have about a 1 in 4 chance of something going wrong so get the unit with the price and features you like and that has at least 75% positive reviews. Then if you're one of the unlucky ones like me, return it and try something else. My second try was an SMC router that is now installed and working for a few days with no problems.

Summary: Sooooooo EASY
Review: Installing this wireless router was possibly the easiest connection I've ever made in computing history. I have BellSouth DSL and a Dell Dimension 4550 (with WinXP). I simply plugged the cords into the router and followed the instructions on the setup card. I didn't have to load anything onto my computer. My wife's laptop (new HP with WinXP) already had an 802.11 card installed and it recognized the connection before I even sat down. All I had to do was hit connect and it was running. We were able to get good speeds anywhere in our house, including the basement, and all around the outside of the house.

I think having Windows XP made this very easy thanks to good plug and play capabilities ... who knows what other O/S's would do. We love it and its SO [INEXPENSIVE].

Summary: Didn't work
Review: Synopsis: Tried to set up the unit as wired router but couldn't get that part to work. Unsuccessful in obtaining technical support. Concluded unit was bad and there was no point setting up the wireless part if I couldn't get an internet connection on my wired PC. Returned unit for a refund. Went to an electronics store and found a replacement which is now installed and working. Top marks to Amazon for order fulfilment and customer service. Boo, Netgear for product quality and technical support.

I bought this item to replace an ORiNOCO BG-2000 that I had to return to my employer when I left the company. I was looking for a reasonably priced replacement and the first place I went was Amazon.com. I went here not only for the prices but also for the customer service and other things like these reviews.

The first thing I did was to read other's reviews and had to conclude that no matter who the manufacturer was, I had a 1 in 4 chance of not being satisfied with this particular type of product. Not wanting to pay a premium for another BG-2000 which has only one ethernet port, I went ahead and ordered the MR814 which Amazon's web page said had a [money amount] dollar mail-in rebate.

I recieved the MR814 promptly and the first thing I noticed was that there was no mail-in rebate coupon. OK, fair enough. It's still 1/2 the price of the BG-2000 and the ethernet switch is built in. I also really liked the form factor. It's a sleek, compact unit.

I had gone back to my D-Link DI-804 wired router while waiting for the MR814. This is significant because the DI-804 was working flawlessly. The point being that as far as I knew and still know, there's nothing wrong with my cable modem, ethernet cabling, or computer NIC.

I did the physical installation and brought up the web page. Before proceding, I went to Netgear's support page to get the latest version of firmware, as other reviewers had mentioned firmware related problems. Besides, isn't that the first thing the tech support folks try when something isn't working?

Finally I began to set up the unit. I started with the wired part only, wanting to make sure that the internet connection was working before I configured the wireless part. The wizard didn't work, so I did the configuration manually. After setting everything up the way I thought it should be - and it ain't complicated, just a host name and click "use DHCP" - I reset the cable modem, the router, and then the computer. The computer came up with a private IP address as expected but the router didn't get an IP address from the network. After clicking the "renew" button on the router's web page a few times and waiting for a while, the router finally obtained a DHCP lease from the ISP. Although I now had a valid IP address on the router, I couldn't ping from my PC NIC through the router to the ISP gateway or DNS server. Needless to say, DNS resolution didn't work either.

Wanting to double check, I reinstalled the D-Link router and was back online within two minutes. I reinstalled the MR814 and double checked everything but like I said, the configuration isn't that complicated. I called tech support and went through several menu choices before being told by a recording that I was being transferred. Transferred to a busy signal and then dropped. Anyway, the support call confirms the other thing that I read in everyone else's reviews. No matter who the manufacturer: if you're having problems, forget calling tech support.

I finally had to conclude that I had a bad unit. It looked a lot to me like an autonegotiation problem between the cable modem and the router, but I felt I had gone far enough with troubleshooting. Amazon's return process was no-hassle, just print a label and drop it at UPS. I haven't gotten a verification of the refund yet, but I'm hopeful.

Epilogue: I was driving past one of the big box electronics stores so I went in to see what they had and there was an SMC router, [money amount]after rebates. So far, it's working. Too bad, because I liked the look of the MR814 and I really wanted it to work. Sorry, Netgear!

Summary: Problem With Dell Centrino Laptops
Review: This is actually an MR814v2 If you are a Dell or other Centrino laptop owner, you might want to look for another wireless router. There is a known problem with a 25min disconnect - which I am experiencing and just today reading about on the DSLreports forum. Intel Wireless Pro software apparently has trouble with this router. I'm still troubleshooting about 3 weeks later. Some reports that it works fine with a regular wireless card.

Summary: Looking for a wireless router? Look no further!
Review: I purchased this to use with my Ipaq 5455, and it works great!
Setup in 5 minutes. Really.

This router includes 4 ports for a wired connection, that can work up to 100mps, or 10mbps if you ahve an older computer (for those new to computer stuff, your internet connection is MUCH slower than those speeds, so it wil not slow that down. Those speeds change things for file sharing)

As for wireless, it comes equipped with 128bit WEP encryption and MAC address filtering, which I would advise you use both. (it comes with a tutorial CD to help with setup, which also includes firewall software). This allows for the best protection available, so other people cannot access stuff it your network. And it works great.
The included antenna has a good range, and it detatchable if you want to put a stronger one on. Yayy.

I have had no problems with the router. Period. A Grewat buy. It's not really worth it for the 54g products unless if you want to do file sharing (again, internet speeds are much slower than 11mps, which is the bandwidth of this router).

For those new to this tuff, this unit plugs into your cable/dsl modem. You can plug up to four computers into it directly (called hardwiring). Every computer you want wireless (up to thrity actual devices) will need either a wireless USB adapter or PCI card (if it is a desktop), and if it is a laptop a wireless PC Card (USB would work for both, but a PC card allows for better mobility becasue it goes inside the PCMCIA slot on your laptop- the USB is an external connection). I recommend Netgear products for these, too, although any product that says 802,11b on it will work with this router.

I have not seen any problems with this device, only results. I own one and have set one up for someone else- not a hitch. The price is great now, too!

Summary: Effective, V2 received, Good Tech Support
Review: I have had this for two weeks along with MA 401, and the MA 101. It was extremely easy to set up with the cable modem which it recognized instantly.

If you use WEP, remember to write down the encription keys the router generates and include them in each of the clients accessing the network.

To reset this router, use a pen or pencil to push the recessed reset button on the back and hold it down for at least 25 seconds. This will set it back to the factory default.

Tech support from India was very good overall. I talked with 3 of them for all of my products and 2 of them really knew what they were talking about and were able to solve my problem within a few minutes.

I received version 2 of this router when I ordered it from Amazon last month.

Summary: Best Router I've owned
Review: I've set up a few routers for friends and family before and this is by far the easiest and best out of the bunch. It has an easy setup, and great wireless range. I also like the fact that it is small and sleek looking, in contrast to some of the bulkier routers out there.
