Rating: Summary: Booted me off every 20 mins!! Review: I recently bought a Netgear wireless router and was extremely dissapointed with my purchase. I bought it because i have a centrino equipped notebook. Installation was very easy and simple. My laptop immediately detected the signal. However, it seems that around every 20 minutes my computer said "wireless connection unavailable" I have a friend that sets up wireless networks for a living. The problem seemed to stump him and he could not maintain a steady connecton with his computer meaning that it was a problem with the router. So I returned it and bought a Linkskys router insted. It is definitely worth the extra money for its reliability
Rating: Summary: Router does not work with Compaq's 2500 54g enabled laptop! Review: As much as I want it to work, NetGear's MR814 wireless router does not work with my Compaq 2500 54g enabled laptop. The laptop works great at Borders T-Mobil Hot Spot, CompUSA's many wireless networks in their store, etc. The router does indeed work with NetGear's own PCMCIA card in the laptop, but not the built in 54g which should indeed be compatable with the 11.b standard. If you use NetGear's own PC Card (PCMCIA) you are fine, but be careful with any other vendor which claims to have compatability with the 802.11b standard using NetGear products.
Rating: Summary: The best in range, the worst in dropped network connections Review: This access point is so frustrating, because it is absolutely wonderful to use with the exception of one feature.I have used this access point for roughly 1 year. Friends of mine who use SBC DSL, and use PPPoE have a great deal of trouble with this access point. I have never had any problems with my access point except one: When you use this access point and use an IMAP mail client on your computer, or a SSH program, it will drop your IMAP session or end your SSH session after a couple minutes of inactivity. This is very annoying if you enjoy leaving your e-mail program open or you switch windows for awhile. VERY ANNOYING. For general surfing and POP email, (therefore for MOST USERS) this access point is perfect. It has never crashed on me, and the range for wireless clients is much better than any other access point I have tried, with the exception of the Netgear dual-antenna access point. (which has no router/gateway features) So, if you are an average home user, it will probably work fine for you for many years.
Rating: Summary: Wireless Works, But Buggy Review: I have used the Netgear MR814 Wireless Router for several months now. The physical design is great and the wireless aspect works great. As a router, though, it leaves much to be desired. Port forwarding nor DMZ applications work, even with the newest 4.11 release of the firmware. For those running software requiring open ports behind the router, choose a different manufacturer.
Rating: Summary: Warning - research and see if it works with your card first! Review: This product looks slick, setup is easy and works great for wired connections. However, I still can't get the wireless to work correctly with a new Centrino notebook. After the fact, I found lots of others having the same problem - it disconnects every 20 minutes or so. I don't have these problems on other access points with my laptop. check out [website] for all the details around this. tech support is not much help either - and the wait is long. On different calls, the wait times have been quoted as 160 minutes down to a minimum of 40 minutes. And they couldn't help once I waited to get through.
Rating: Summary: Works like a champ! Review: Just a quick note that in the past year, I have installed two separate wireless networks using this router along with Netgear wireless adapters on desktop and laptop PCs and find it to be extremely easy to install. I am please to say that both networks have been running flawlessly without a hitch. One system is connected to cable-based internet and the other a wireless internet service offered by Sprint. I had originally purchased some SMC wireless hardware (router and USB adapters) for the first installation which eventually became an absolute nightmare to keep running (constant router hangs, poor signal strength, dropped connections between the router and the ISP, dropped connections between the router and the clients, etc). After that episode, for the second network I tried NetGear hardware and had excellent results. Eventually, I ended up tossing the initial SMC setup and replaced the whole setup with NetGear hardware. For the record, this system has been up and running since day one without any problems. My vote is for NetGear. They make great, reliable hardware. Highly recommended. BTW, for a desktop, I recommend the USB adapters because you can adjust the antenna position for best signal strength. Hope this helps with your decision.
Rating: Summary: Do not expect much tech support Review: I bought an MR814v2 and Ma521 PC card about three weeks ago. I freely admit to being far from an expert in this area. I have not been able to make the equipment work and have sent eight emails to Netgear "support" with no answer. I couldn't suggest this company to anyone, the equipment may be fine, but if you can't get help to get it running, who knows?
Rating: Summary: Easy set up - nice range Review: I had little trouble setting this unit up. From opening the box to surfing the web from my bath tub in less then an hour! The enclosed CD ROM set up assistant was very easy to follow. I was able to surf the web from my living room (about 55 feet from the router) with no trouble or noticable decrease in speed. I have the router connected to my desktop Windows PC and cable modem. Our laptop is a Mac with a AirPort card (NOT the AirPort extreme card). This unit is a fraction of the cost of an Apple AirPort base and for my needs it does everything I would need the more expensive unit to do. I dont believe that you can install this router if you only have a Mac so do your homework before you buy one if you are an Apple only household. So far so good - I am very happy with this item!
Rating: Summary: Works great (after upgrading firmware)!!! Review: Based on my research, I hoped that I'd have this router up and running as soon as I plugged it in, especially since a friend of mine had bought it the day before and installed it without a problem (and I consider myself to be more technically savvy than she is). Well, after two days I figured out that my problem (having an ethernet cable connection to the router working but not being able to access the router wirelessly) would be resolved by a firmware upgrade. In the hopes that this will save other people the time and hassle, I wanted to let future purchasers know that you can find the upgrade at Netgear's website under support for the MR814v2. Now that it works, I love it (and had I known about the upgrade, I too would have had the product up and running within 15 minutes after opening the box).
Rating: Summary: Great for surfing but not for serving. Review: This product would have received 5 stars except for: 1) Port forwarding does not work. That means you can't optimally use your favorite file sharing software (eg, Kazaa) with this router. (-1) star 2) When your connections exceed 256 connections (very common when file sharing) the router dies, loses its connection to your broadband ISP and requires a power cycle in order to get it working again. (-1) star 3) On the feature list, it says it has network printer sharing capabilities but it's actually done thru setting up a dedicated pc attached to the printer, so you have to turn that pc on and wait for it to boot in order to print. No dedicated print server. (-1) star It does get (+1) star for style and design and another (+1) star for having good range and a removable antenna for mounting in a more optimal location, however, I haven't been able to find a place where you can purchase the ext. cable. My other choices are Microsoft, Linksys, and SMC...although, the SMC is the only one that comes with a dedicated print server.
