Rating: Summary: Maybe it's just me, but this thing is terrible... Review: I was not happy with the performance of a D-Link WiFi router so I thought I'd try the better rated Netgear MR814v2. This was worse than the D-Link.Where the D-Link would have only a momentary drop in the wireless link, this router completely stops passing data on a regular basis. I have to unplug (reboot) the router, release & renew the IP configuration and restart. I tried to call Netgear tech support for 2 days but never reached a person. I was either placed in "dead air" or put on hold and then disconnected after about 30 minutes of waiting. A bad product and bad support. I'll probably go back to the D-Link because that model would at least continue working after a brief drop. That's better than a complete freeze. It's frustrating to see so many positive reviews only to get a product that's unusable.
Rating: Summary: Works great! Review: My laptop has an Orinoco card built in. Tested it with D-Link DI-614+ and Netgear MR814v2. D-link router, -- you need to turn off the 4x mode in config menu to work with other non-Dlink 802.11b devices. -- the bandwidth I get in all the tests is half of wired. -- uses a Conexant processor, TI mini PCI card, one internal & one detachable external antenna and tons of capacitors. -- has smart travel sized adaptor but only 110V. -- sturdier body compared to Netgear. -- extemely easy to setup. Netgear router, -- looks slightly better and is a bit lighter. -- the bandwidth I get in all the tests not as good as wired. -- has 3 yr warranty (although these are disposable routers longer warranty suggests better quality components) -- has modern & custom made components inside it (couldn't resist opening them :) -- slightly less range compared to Dlink. -- has ridiculously heavy, big & very primitive AC adaptor and only 110V. -- extremely easy to set up Troubleshooting guide, -- Update the drivers and firmware for your Wifi card. -- Update the firmware to latest version for your router. -- Turn off any firewall like ZoneAlarm on your PC intially. -- Some applications like KazaaLite might need advanced setup on the router. -- Check everything wired first, then wireless without WEP and finally wireless with WEP. -- Disable SSID broadcast and enable 128bit WEP for security. Don't expect any tech support from either company. (For such low priced routers they can hardly afford support.) You will need to google yourself or get help from forums. Both routers are great value for most users, get which ever is cheaper!
Rating: Summary: Ok.... Review: I purchased this router and received it around the starting of September. The MR814(v2) was a great router, for 3 days. It has plenty of features and is easy to set up. The internet browsing was fast and then today, when I browsing the internet, I kept getting "This page cannot be displayed" errors. After that, I could not browse web pages that weren't cached or already connected. I have sent an email and called NETGEAR but no luck. But when I disconnect the router for about... 1 hour, everything starts working fine again, for about one more week, and then this happens again. I do not know if this is a NETGEAR problem or my ISPs, but since it's on all of my computers, I can't blame myself! But during other times, the router does run fast and flawlessly with any connection. Setup is easy, but not what I expect... for the newbies, they also might be confused with DHCP and DNS, which is mentioned in the wizard. -Jeff K.
Rating: Summary: excellent product, better than linksys Review: I brought this product 2 months ago and found it was much better than Linksys wireless access point: It has light weight and longer signal receiving range, besides, it could support maximum 256 computers and it is cheaper..... I can't see a reason why people want to buy linksys. I has a linksys access point for 1 year and change it to netgear
Rating: Summary: Don't buy the Microsoft wireless! Review: I have Netgear in my apartment in NYC and had a problem with remote access because of a microwave and large fridge. Thought I would go with Microsoft as it got good reviews and I had a three story area to cover in the country. Six attempts at my PC (Win98) recognizing the router failed. Called Tech support...waited 30 minutes...got a "case number"....waited in vain for 1.5 HOURS! Finally gave up, returned the Microsoft product and got Netgear MMR814v2. Up and running in 15 minutes and no tech support. Just had to change the name of the network from the one in the city. Am not sure of the coverage distance but at least I have one floor below where I am wireless. The v2 is smaller than the one I have in NYC and attractive. Forget Microsoft and go with this one. I usually don't write this but all of the Netgear reviews convinced me to buy... I owe some one out there a thanks for aiming me towards this product.
Rating: Summary: Mostly good but still has issues. Review: My laptop has an Orinoco card built in (the best one can have & works fine everywhere). Tested it with D-Link DI-614+ and Netgear MR814v2, placed 3 feet from laptop with no 2.4GHz devices around. The D-link router, -- disconnects itself & reboots every 5 mins. -- takes forever to come back from resets & requires me to disable/enable the wireless card each time it comes back. -- whenever its running the bandwidth I get in all the tests is like dialup (instead of 1+ Mbps on wired network). -- disabling the WEP doesn't help -- works fine as a wired hub -- extremely easy to set up -- uses a Conexant processor, TI mini PCI card, one internal & one external antenna and other off-the-shelf components (giving it slightly bigger size, weight compared to Netgear) -- has travel sized adaptor but only 110V. -- is not worth paying any money for, its POS. The Netgear router, -- looks better and comes with a vertical stand -- works fine most of the time (it does drop connection for few secs once every 30 mins or so) -- costs slightly more than D-link POS -- extremely easy to set up -- has 3 yr warranty (although these are disposable routers, longer warranty suggests better build quality) -- has modern & custom made components inside it (couldn't resist opening it :) -- has ridiculously heavy AC adaptor and only 110V. -- slows down KazaaLite connections to a fraction of wired speeds (anyone know a solution to this? port forwarding?) D-link is going back to store within a day. All the positive reviews must be from people using all-things-dlink setup or didn't check up the speed etc before writing a review. Netgear will also go back if I can get KazaaLite working & the occasional drops resolved. Maybe I need to get a business class router/access point. Poor state of wireless industry... advertized features like xxx bit WEP, yy Mbps, zzz feets of range, etc are all misleading, they just don't work. Instead of making reliable 802.11b equipment they are now jumping to 22Mps, 54Mpbs etc.
Rating: Summary: One of the best piece of equipment Review: I got cable modem from Comcast. I was worry about being attack by hacker so my friend told me to buy a router. After reading the earlier reviewers, I purchased it. The price was great for a wireless one. I'm fully satisfied with it and the installation is a piece of cake. Now my whole family has connection to the internet, not just me. Make sure you change the default password!

Rating: Summary: as easy as 123 Review: I don't know much about computer, let alone networking. I bought this router so I can have my laptop (window 98) and my PC (XP) to have high speed internet at the same time. Took me 2 minutes to connect the wires (cat5 cables) to my cable box and the computers. I'll tackle the wireless USB adapter next so my third pc can access from down stairs without hard wiring.
Rating: Summary: painless installation, no problems Review: i installed the mr814 in my apartment without any difficulties. paired with ma401 wireless pc card - excellent signal quality.
