Rating: Summary: Easy to setup Review: This is my first experience with setting up a home network. I have a cable internet DSL connected to a desktop computer and wanted to add access to the internet for a laptop. My initial plan was to setup the laptop via a wireless connection. However after receiving the MR814 I decided to try a wired connection first. Setup was easy. I followed the instrucitons in the little four page phamplet that came with the unit. It took a minute or two. It was extremely easy to setup and is working very well.I havent tried its wireless capability yet. I am happy with the MR814 and would recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Reliable wireless connection needs obscure configuration Review: This router was easy to set up. Unfortunately, the wireless connection would drop after a few minutes. Sometimes, a new connection could not be established for several more minutes even if the Centrino system running Windows XP was a foot away from the router. This was with WEP disabled. No connection could be established with WEP enabled. After much searching on the Internet, I found the solution that resulted in a rock solid wireless connection. Here are the links: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,6865210~root=equip,9~mode=flat~start=80 and http://www.tabletpcbuzz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5562& Search for "Rudy B." (Intel Technical Support). A technical explanation is available from Intel: http://www.intel.com/support/network/wireless/pro2100/sb/cs-006131-prd944.htm After making these configuration changes, I have not lost a wireless connection in over a week. I am able to use 128-bit encryption with WEP. For connecting to work, VPN works well with DSL and PPPoE. I get a very good to excellent signal everywhere in our two-level house except at the farthest room with about six walls, stairs, and an entertainment unit between the router and room (then the signal strength is only fair, but still quite usable). This router is a great value. (Thank you Amazon.com!) The following is an update to my comments above. The Netgear router has been up for two weeks now with no resets and no dropped connections. I have been using 128-bit encryption with WEP for the entire duration. I ran the speed benchmark at dslreports.com with three walls and a staircase between the Centrino system and the router: over 500 Kb/s download and 128 Kb/s upload for SBC DSL. I've never gotten more than 750 Kb/s download on a wired connection so I think the speed is acceptable. Many reviewers giving this router negative ratings blame the router for poor wireless connection. They typically don't disclose the wireless card, its driver, OS version or patches. How can they be certain the router is the source of the problem? If they have a Centrino system running Windows XP, did they know that a Microsoft patch for WPA is incompatible with Intel's older driver supporting only WEP? Did they disable Intel power management system and set wireless power to maximum? Did they disable IEEE 802.1x authentication? Did they install the router's latest firmware? WiFi can be hard to set up. The router is only one part of the whole system.
Rating: Summary: Not a good wireless router! Review: This netgear MR814 is a good wired router but not a good wireless router. Major problem is that I need to keep rebooting the adapter every 30 minutes as it drops my laptop connection but it performs well for a wired LAN and its cheap. I guess you get what you pay for. I am going to return this and buy a D-Link.
Rating: Summary: Very easy to set up and use Review: I hooked this router up to a cable modem and desktop PC w/ Windows XP. I also got a Netgear MA401 wireless card and put it in my laptop w/ Windows 2K. I was up and running in minutes! It seems to work pretty well for my needs. I am a home user and don't need the 802.11G. I do notice that sometimes when we use our 2.4 Ghz cordless phone, the connection drops when I'm logged on to my company's VPN using IPSEC, but that's not all the time. After rebates, the router and the wireless card cost me [money]. What a value!
Rating: Summary: Was disconnecting every 20-25 minutes Review: But I was finally able to make it work with my Dell 600m and my integrate intel wifi (I took me a while to figure out that I had to force Intel PROset as the main wifi manager instead of windows... kind of complicated but you'll find some help on the internet on various forums if you encounter the same problem...). Great product, stylish, setup a little bit easier than with my previous linkys... Incredible price from amazon... don't hesitate a single second : )
Rating: Summary: Unrealiable - tech support a hassle Review: Judging by the other user comments, I guess some people are lucky and don't have a problem with this router. I am not one of them. It worked great when it actually worked properly, but I found the proformance to be inconsistent and the router often dropped packets. Their tech help is in India so you have to wait about an hour to get through and then the help, although friendly, was difficult to understand. I ended up calling three times and finally felt I had wasted enough time on the phone with them and sent it back for a refund. Life is to short to spend holding on the phone. I can not recommend this product if you need a reliable connection. I guess if you are not online too much then it will suffice, but if you work from home and absolutely need it to work everytime, don't count on it.
Rating: Summary: Not compatible with DSL Provider modem Review: Had the router working for about a day then would not work again. NetGear support was unable to resolve issue. Had to return. NetGear said my DSL providers modem (Verizon) was not compatible. Even though more expensive, going to buy a Linksys Wireless router. I have had no issues with before with my existing Linksys Non-Wireless router and the Verizon DSL Modem.
Rating: Summary: Just did not work Review: The router wireless connection got disconnected every few hours. After Netgear techicain send me a software update the router just stopped work completely.
Rating: Summary: I was up and running in 5 minutes Review: I've had zero problems with the unit. It's very easy to use. A hint on setting it up, do it all with a direct cat 5 cable first before you try to set up the wireless part (should be obvious from the instructions). I've yet to be out of range through multiple walls the house.
Rating: Summary: Cheap decent wireless router! Review: i order this for $35 after mail-in rebate. i think it's a awesome router. the only downside is that the connection lag every once a while, not a good idea for online gamers. it looks very sleek and sets up very easily. great router overall.
