Rating: Summary: Great Product!! Great Price!! Review: Awesome product!!! Very easy to set-up! I've been shopping wireless routers for the past week, and came across this netgear and it's price. My I.T. guy at work highly recommended the netgear, telling me it's a great product for the price. I have no complaints!! Only took me 15 minutes, and i was up and running, very easy install!!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Unit! Review: My home network was the first network that I had ever set up. I have found the Netgear WGR614 802.11g Wireless Router to be a great unit. The "G" standard means that it works much faster than the "B" standard for wireless applications. I have two computers hard wired to this router, and use it's wireless capability for my third computer, a laptop. The only problems I had setting up the network had nothing to do with the router. I have Norton Internet Security installed on my computers, and this caused communication problems until I figured out how to set up the firewalls to allow proper operation. Overall, I think this is an excellent router, and offers excellent performance for a reasonable expense.
Rating: Summary: Works Great...for people who understand what they're doing Review: This router, like it's predecessor for 802.11b are great home routers. It is not on the shoulders of Netgear to train you how to set it up. If you are not familiar with Dynamic and static ip addressing, don't know if your internet connection is which and expect "plug n play" connectivity for this or ANY other wireless router, hire a computer person to set it up for you. Car makers sell cars, they do not offer training on how to drive the car. Additionally, if you are taking a wireless router, like this and just plugging it in, it's completely open in terms of anyone else jumping onto your network and then taking data from your machines...even those not using wireless. I personally, would not want to lose my tax information or social security number to a stranger. Minimally, my recommendation would be to turn of SSID broadcast and to use MAC address restrictions. Otherwise, a great router physically and performance wise.
Rating: Summary: inconsistent wireless performance Review: Everyday is a different story with this product. Some days I connect with good signal, other days I can't connect 5 feet away from the router. I've been on the phone for hours with tech support and although they try to help, they haven't been able to get the unit working consistently. Also, the documentation is very weak and the website offers little help. Overall, I DON'T recommend this product. Stay away.
Rating: Summary: Only the REALLY brave should consider Netgear Review: I've spent most of the last three days trying to get a Netgear wireless home network up and running. The sad thing is that I'm a network consultant, so this should be easy. Why is Netgear making it so hard? Their Help Desk staff are apparently in a Far Eastern country. They have heavy accents that are very difficult for this Midwesterner to understand. They also seem to have some trouble understanding English. Not a good mix for a support function. I've registered, and re-registered my hardware several times, but the support reps keep telling me that it isn't registered. No registration = no support. I've called three times, and each time I've been abruptly disconnected because Netgear says my products are 'unregistered.' At least, I think that's what they're saying to me. Unless you're more of networking guru than I am, skip the Netgear product and try the Wi-Fi network offerings from Linksys and Microsoft.
Rating: Summary: unit ok/tech support very poor/very$$$ Review: unit required a call to tech support to set up, got it up and running after about 25 minutes, had a problem 4 months later and netgear wants me to pay $29.95 per call to tech support b/c free tech support is only available for 90 days. i asked the person from netgear who told me this if i was being "punked" but he said he was serious.i then went out and bought a microsoft unit with much better support and they have treated me excellent. my advice ...go with a company that will give you more tech support and backing for its products.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: I got it yesterday with the wgb-511 pcmcia card. Set them up in 10-15 mins. And, I was surfing with the laptop without problems. The range went through 2 walls AND 100+ feet with ease. I've had Linksys befsr41 before and didn't want to change companies because it was so great. But, the netgear is truely an excellent machine.
Rating: Summary: Simple and Reliable Review: I used this to replace an existing Netgear wired-hub connected to a cable modem. Comcast is our ISP. Installation couldn't have been easier. The wired connections needed no work at all beyond plugin. Our Mac, running OS X, needed only to have Airport turned on for wireless. The PC, running Win 2000, needed only straighforward installation of Netgear WAG511 card. The default settings worked for us, so documentation was adequate. I have had to reinstall the WAG511 software on the PC once. Don't know why. Range is good. Browser-based security settings are great. Stay plugged in if you're downloading software.
Rating: Summary: On and running fell short Review: I wrote a stellar review of this product this A.M. it was running all of my computers to perfection. Went out and came home 5 hours later it was down. called tech support ( only 3 min wait time) and went through the channels to find out the unit was gone, kaput, dead, fini, etc. So I am reversing my opinion. For what its worth stay away.....................................
Rating: Summary: Off and running or should I say "On and running"? Review: I started this order with some trepidation after reading the mixed reviews of this product here and on other sites. From opening the box to the full activation of three systems (one with win XP the other win98 and a laptop with win XP)timed out at about 45 Mins.,this included adding a pci card to the Win 98 desk top. The range is great as I can have breakfast on the back deck and surf the morning news on line. I am not a comp geek. I have changed out bad modems etc in the past and was worried that this would be over my head but those fears were unjustified. Go for it. good product and fast shipping from amazon.
