Summary: How to Set it up in compaq notebook with XP system
Review: First, you should install smc utility software. The driver files locate in the smc utility dir.(for example:C:\Program Files\SMC\SMC2635W Wireless Cardbus Adapter Utility\drivers\WINXP). You need locate it to windows installer so that XP could find hardware driver.

Summary: Flawed product
Review: Hardware: Dell Inspiron 4000, 384 MB RAM
OS: Windows XP ProYou get what you pay for. After rebates, this card cost me $10 - while I could establish a connection, I could never completely get rid of lost packets causing disconnects, causing a disruption in downloads, streaming media, etc. No amount of tech support could resolve the problem. Unfortunately, there's no way to predict what card will work with your system and OS. Trial and error is the only sure way to find YOUR card.

Summary: No Problem for me....
Review: Hardware: SMC7004VWBR, SMC2635W in Toshiba A15-S129.
Software: XP Home, and the updated driver from SMC. Experience: During testing, I had my labtop in the same room as the router. The connection was great, no disconnections at all. It was as fast as the wired connection. I could get good connection when I am three rooms away from the router. I would get no connection if I go over 30 feet.
Problems: I would either get good connection or no connection. Nothing in between. The range isn't the greatest, but then again, it was cheap.
Bottomline: It is cheap, and it works.

Summary: Disconnects with XP pro, ok with XP home
Review: Hello all, I have posted many comments on this card on numereous sites. The bottom line from all the frustration is that if you have windows XP pro this card will always disconnect frequently. I have 2 of these cards from different batches, both exhibit same problems with xp pro. Just check out the previous comments, they all support my theory. I tried them with XP home and viola, the sun was shining, the birds were singing, champagne was falling from the skies and the red carpet was rolling.

Summary: Works with 2000 but not XP
Review: I bought this card at overstock.com. It works with my Compaq Presario 1700 running Windows 2000 Professional, although it likes to drop the connection frequently. It fails completely with my Compaq Presario 2105 running Windows XP. The XP computer is able to connect with a Linksys card.

Review: I can't get this PC Card to even be recognized as a network card on the Compaq. I tried sticking it in an old Toshiba laptop running Windows 98SE and it worked! The Compaq keeps looking for a network controller not an adapter. This may not be the fault of the card, but rather teh computer itself. Good luck if you buy one of these. Their tech support knew less than I did.

Summary: Problem with XP Pro
Review: I guess I am not the only one that is having problem with this card on XP Pro. The connection seem to be okay but somehow it kills my office suite. I am having problem of office software crashing. Access, Excel, Word, and especially Outlook crashes after I install the driver for this card. I actually wipe off my whole hard drive and reinstall everything but as soon as I put the driver for this card on the system the office suite started crashing again.
I notice that during my installation there is a pop up screen from Windows stating that the software isn't Microsoft approved therefore might cause problems with some of the software and the operating system. If anyone has any newer drivers or a solution for this please let me know.
The connection for me isn't a problem and the stregth is pretty good. So I have no complain about that just crashing my office suite that is causing me a headache!

Summary: doesn't work with all hardware/software combos
Review: I have tried this on 3 laptops (IBM T40/XP Pro, Toshiba 2805/WinME and Averatec 3150H/XP Home). Can't get it to work in the Averatec at all. Others work great. Easy install. Great range. No problems with VPN.

Summary: Wireless at affordable price
Review: I just received this card yesterday. I also bought smc7004vwbr wireless router. I hooked the router to my cable modem and installed the router application on my desktop pc(WinXP Home edition). I connected the desktop to the router with with regulat cat5 cable. Then I pluugged in the SMC2635W card into my laptop (Windows2000 professional) and installed the driver. Magic. I am online from ny desktop and laptop at the same time. The DHCP part of the router worked fine. And I was able to connect to my office via VPN. No problems at all. I read some bad reviews about 7004vwbr. I guess the problems are now fixed. I am getting good signal from it.
