Summary: TOC ERROR
Review: This mini disc player served me well for about a year and then I started to get repeated TOC ERRORS. I checked online and it is a common problem with the sharp mini disc players. I can no longer use mine and I am trying to get Sharp to replace the one I currently have. You should probably spend a few more dollars and buy the Sony models. Sony invented the mini disc player and their players are much more reliable.

Summary: The Minidisc Revolution
Review: This minidisc recorder is in a class of it's own. At only 169.99* it can be seen as a very worthwhile investment into the future. With crystal clear recordings, smooth polished playing, and many functions which can make the user feel at ease, the minidisc is ideal for any long plane, train or car trip, or indeed, to use during that 10min stroll through the park.

Eventually minidiscs will take over the audio world, due to their small size, ease of transport, and crystal clear audio tracks. Unlike the cassette, the discs never ware out, and so, memories can be recorded, for ever, without fear that they will ware out. They can also withstand an awful lot of shaking, and shock, therefore making it, for the first time possible to listen to what ever you want, going through turbulence, or heading down that bumpy highway, and into the future.

Summary: A nifty little unit...
Review: I decided to take the plunge into Minidisc by buying this unit - the price was right and the features on this guy were impressive.

First, the plus side - it has a disk drive type load/eject mechanism - other models you open up the unit and slide the disc in - this model you just pop the disc in like a floppy drive - no hassles.

Second, you can dynamically change the recording level while recording - most other units don't do this.

Third, has an MDlink digital input - for flawless copying from CD. This is very cool because it automatically marks tracks. Also records from analog sources and looks for periods of silence to auto mark tracks. Of course, like other similar units it can combine/split tracks after they're recorded.

Also, the rechargeable batter is nice - I find it lasts about 7 hours depending on volume, skipping songs etc. This is more than adequate for even extreme situations - like an LA to NY flight.

On the down side - the unit lets you enter titles for individual tracks and even the whole disc, but the interface for doing this is ackward.

Also, the play modes are limitted - you can single track repeat, repeat the whole disc, or shuffle play the whole disc. You can't program your own tracks into the unit - I guess to some degree the fact that you can reorder tracks on the disc makes up for this, but not really.

Two other downsides are the included wired remote control and the included headphones. I suggest dumping the included phones immediately - they're ok sound wise, but only ok, and the cord is too short. The remote is cool - it features a backlit display that mirrors all of the information displayed on the unit itself (and strangely, the unit itself does not have a backlit display) - but the controls on the remote are too small and ackwardly positioned to be of much use - also, by touch they're pretty indistinguishable from one another and since you often use the remote in your pocket, this is a big disadvantage. Also, the remote has a small aligator clip on the back so that you can attach it to your clothes, but it seems to be facing the wrong way which increases the ackwardness of the remote.

Finally, one downside of this unit which you may not notice is that its ATRAC compression algorithm, which the unit uses to remove "non-essential" parts of the audio so that it will fit on the minidisc's limitted storage space, is an older version of the algorithm. Newer models from Sony and Sharp have newer versions of the algorithm which supposedly results in better recording quality, though I cannot comment on the accuracy of this.

Summary: Great for anyone that owns tons of CD's
Review: An excellent MD unit, that makes recording a snap. It plays crystal clear and can be cranked up wicked loud. The remote is a handy device that eliminates the "pocket fishing" problem plagued by other MD units. The only downfall for the device is the rechargable battery pack that comes with the MD. Its great because you can charge it over and over again, but on long road trips, the battery dies in six hours, and if you don't have the AA battery caddy, your SOL. Overall though, a worthy buy.

Summary: Garbage
Review: A little over a year after purchasing this unit, it simply stopped playing, giving only a "TOC errorA" message. After sending the unit to a repair shop (the unit was barely out of warranty -please be warned Sharp provides only a 90 day labor warranty, and a one year parts warranty), I was told that the laser was defective. Cost for repair: $150. Sharp refused to help me with this problem in any way. My recommendations are to not buy ANY Sharp products.

Summary: Great sound, small unit, and NEVER SKIPS!
Review: A while back i was debating over wheather to get an Mp3 player or a mini disc player. In the end i went with the minidisc for the reason that blank discs are extremely cheap, unlike extra Mp3 memory. When i got this from Amazon, i was pleasantly suprized. This thing comes with all the cables to hook up to a stereo, computer or tv, and record with amazing quality. Whats even better is that you can even record by sticking any old pair of headphones in the mic jack! Finally, the best part is that it LITERALLY NEVER SKIPS! I can even shake it up and down while i listen (or record) and nothing happens. This thing is awesome!

Summary: UTOC? Try cleaning it!
Review: I've had my 702 for over two years now, and it still works fairly well. Yes, I said two years - and I still only paid about $75 more than the list price on this discontinued model.

About a year in, I got the infamous --- UTOC error --- on a disk. Went to Best Buy and bought a Maxell MD cleaner (after taking the silly thing apart, etc. trying to "fix" it). Ran the cleaner three times, and everything was fine. I can still record, but I have to clean it more often now (every couple of months), or I get the errors (or skipping disks) again. I run my 702 between 8 and 48 hours per week.

All I can say is: if you have a cleaner for your CD player, and your DVD player, and your VCR, and a cleaner for your cassette player, WHY DON'T YOU HAVE ONE FOR YOUR MD? If you have a dead 702 because of UTOC, why don't you spend a few bucks and see if you can fix it?

Summary: Great!
Review: I bought my Sharp ms702 a while ago and it has been great. No problems whatsoever, and it has the best quality on anything that I have heard on a portable piece of sound equipment.
