Rating: Summary: Great Product Review: After reading other reviews I was a bit sceptical about purchasing the Zoom 3090-00-00 external USB modem. But I went through with purchase and have had nothing but great success with the modem. I installed the drivers on my laptop (Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo D 8800, Win XP Home) and my PC (EMachines Tower 533id, Win 98SE). On both of the machines the connection speed is great (45 Kbps) even though I have a poor telephone line. Once I change out the old cable on my telephone line for a better one I should be getting a connection speed better than 50 Kbps. Just make sure to follow the instructions and the recommendations from other reviewers and you will not be disappointed. Also, make sure to use the driver for Win XP users that is available on the Zoom webpage and not the one on the CD that comes with the modem.

Rating: Summary: I'd give it zero stars if I could Review: I bought this modem to overcome terrible phone lines made worse by constant construction and HOW this modem made the top of a multi-unit comparison I'll never know. Since the day I installed it it's been non-stop frustration. Even as late as 2002 the XP drivers for the modem--online or not--cause more trouble than they solve. Even at the highest speeds I can connect with, all I usually get are "Cannot Find Server" screens because of the transmission lag, despite Zoom's highly touted increase in speed with USB. 33,600 is somehow slower than 2,400 and there's just no excuse for that. It's difficulty with XP is only surpseed by its obnoxious tech support whose sole piece of advice is always "reboot your computer," who are easily some of the rudest tech support operatives I've ever encountered. The whole experience with it has been far far more trouble than it's worth. My recommendation is to avoid this product as if your life depended on it. If Zoom is your only recourse to solving connection difficulties, you're better off without the Internet in your life at all.
Rating: Summary: Avoid It Review: I bought this modem today in a local store and have decided to return it first thing tomorrow morning. I followed all instructions to install the USB drive and it took the modem forever to dial and it NEVER connected to my ISP. The software disk and manual are worthless. Bottom line: avoid it.
Rating: Summary: Really Plug and Play Review: I got the modem yesterday and it took less than 15 minutes to install it. Dial-up was quick and connects at 48800 bps all the time. Free software "adsubtract" is excellent at killing all the popup ads. You do not need to buy any cables or wires, it comes with everthing you need. It deserves the 5 stars. ...
Rating: Summary: works, but not ideal Review: I got this product because my old faxmodem died and I needed something. It was the cheapest external I could find (and even cheaper with a rebate from Zoom). Plusses: - USB means you don't need an AC adapter (it supplies power as well as connectivity). - No need to plug into a serial port. - In my tests of FAXing and connecting via dialup, the modem works fine. Minuses: - See the little colored lights in the picture above? In the modem I got, these are replaced with pieces of opaque plastic that don't light up at all. I like seeing the lights -- helps me know what's going on. Sorry, no lights any more. Probably a cost-cutting measure. - See the area where sound is supposed to come out of the speaker? Sorry, no speaker. Probably as another cost-cutting measure, the sound comes out of your PC speakers (and is rather loud even on the lowst L1 setting). - Want to use it on Linux or Mac? Sorry, it's supported only under Windows. As for the problems connecting that other people have experienced, I didn't see them. I think perhaps they have been resolved in current versions of the drivers. The verdict? I'm keeping it because I rarely use a modem any more except for the occasional outgoing FAX (I'm on DSL). But without lights, a speaker and simple compatability with other systems, this is a modem I would pass up if I had to really rely on it all the time.
Rating: Summary: POS Review: I had nothing but trouble with this modem since I purchased it. My original problem was that it took forever for Zoom to publish XP drivers for this modem, and it was never supported under NT. When they finally delivered the XP drivers they didn't work. Finally, they delivered working drivers, but the perfomance of the modem was pathetic. My old generic modem which employed a Lucent chipset outperformed it by far. I got very poor cooperation from their support. I finally threw the thing in a box and forgot about it. I was very dissappointed because I had been a big fan of Zoom modems up until I purchased this thing. Recently, I pulled it back out of the box to play with it again. It still performs poorly on my system (Intel PIII 800mhz overclocked to 900mhz, 512MB Ram) I give it one star only because I can't give it less. I suggest shopping around.

Rating: Summary: Excellent product Review: I had tried a couple of other products using my laptop and Windows 2000 (PCMCIA cards) --- none worked and all were more expensive than this USB modem. I bought it, connected it and was up and running with no problems. Love it, will look for other Zoom products in the future !
Rating: Summary: Great Modem Review: I hooked up the modem with no problems. I am running windows 98 SE on and HP e-vectra. It is great that this modem supports the new V92 standard. Good deal.
