Summary: works great with AT&T Broadband
Review: After frustrating results trying to set up the cable modem and 20 hours on line with @Home... no, not @Home. Today, ATTBI... (will it be ATTBI-Comcast???)

The new ATTBI help desk officially does not support this modem. However, the reason for my troubles was because the flunkies that were helping me failed to properly register my MAC address.

Be persistent with updating your MAC address with your cable ISP and the Linksys BEFCMU10 will work like a charm.

Summary: I love broadband
Review: It does exactly what it's suposed to do, which is a resounding mark of support in the electronics industry. After the cable company got things right on their end (three visits, including one to replace the main line), the thing started right up. I lost the internet connection once, but reset the modem and restarted my computer and it came back up. You just plug it in, call with your MAC address (from the modem), and you're up and running. The instructions make it look slightly more complicated if you need to use USB, because you have to install a driver. I'm using ethernet and it runs right out of the box.
For those of you looking at this modem because you're considering high speed, all I can say is go for it. I was using dial up for over 7 years, until about 12 hours ago, and I can say that I've hardly gotten off the computer. It makes a world of difference, and I'll never go back unless I go broke.

Summary: good modem at a good price
Review: I was happy with the modem. installation uneventful with comcast cable modem, dell 4600 computer, netgear router, and vonage telephone service. Everything is working perfectly at good speeds. for the price ($38 after discount), beat the modem supplied by comcast

Summary: strike one...
Review: First modem was dead out of the box. On it's way back to Amazon now with a replacement on the way to me. Couldn't get it to synch with Cox Cable in Northern VA. I worked with Cox support...tried cycling power, re-provisioning, unplugging for hours...nothing. When the installer guy hooked up his (Toshiba) modem, it synched immediately. After two days of trying to synch my Linksys, I decided it was dead.

Also...Wish Linksys would re-label the lights. Seems a bit confusing the way it is (see earlier reviews). My "cable" light never stayed lit (like you would assume it should)...but regardless...I couldn't get an IP address from their DHCP server. I have confidance in Linksys products, so I still give this modem 3/5 stars. I'm sure the next one will work fine (*crossing fingers*).

Summary: Good investment. Quit renting at this price if you can.
Review: For $10/month rental fee Cox made the decision to buy a cable modem an easy one once prices dropped below $100. I've had mine for 5 months now and noticed an immediate increase (about 10%) in both down and upstream bitrates compared to the COM21 modem it replaced. Surprisingly the cable modem swap was handled easily over the phone with Cox support.

My only complaint with the modem is it tends to run warm to the touch. The Linksys hub that sits next to the modem stays cool. In my experience, hardware that's warm to the touch doesn't last that long in continuous operation. I took a quiet 60mm fan and simply placed it on top of the modem ventilation holes pulling air through the modem. I'll never know if this prevented modem failure, but for about $5 for the fan I figure it's a good idea since it keeps it cooler than it would be otherwise.

Summary: A great cable modem, but it gets hot!
Review: I don't know why I waited two years before purchasing my own modem. I would have saved 2 years' worth of modem rental fees with Comcast Cable.

This is a great modem, and replaces an RCA modem I was renting that was always going offline. I NEVER have to reset the Linksys modem (pulling the plug), and the performance seems a tad faster and more consistent. If you have a Linksys router, their devices are all stackable, so you can save desk space.

I rated it 4/5, only because of one bad feature: heat. While Linksys devices are stackable, the devices get really HOT when stacked on top of each other. I don't know if it would cause a meltdown or anything, but right now I'm trying to figure out how to create some buffer between the two. When they're apart, each stays cool, so I'm pretty sure it's just a question of being too close without enough air circulation.

Summary: Linksys V2 Cable Modem... Slow (9/10th speed drop)
Review: I bought this modem at best buy and got it for 60 after rebates. I went from the genernic modem that charter was using and pulling 300k downloads (2MB service) to linksys pulling 40k downloads. The speed test went from 1929kB to 350 kB. Unacceptable. It was easy to set up with all my linksys gear that is why I gave it 2 instead of 1 star.

The internet is so slow I could almost compare it to dialup in some ways, pull one download and surf speeds are cut to a tenth of the speed. We had MSN DSL before this and it was 500k and pulled 75k downloads so we went to charter cable for 300k downloads (and higher at times 600k +) . With this modem we are 1/10 of that.

Called linksys and they were of little help. I am RMAing this unit for a V3 and we will see how that works. For now all I can give it is a 2. Linksys really dropped the ball on this one.

Summary: Make sure you get the latest version - 3
Review: I had purchased this cable modem from Amazon around September 2003. Had the same "lock-up" problem as described in some posts. Linksys tech support was not much of a use. However, since it was still under one year warranty, I exchanged it for version 3 (original was version 2). It had cost me additional $15, but version 3 works fine.

Summary: Looks great, but can become unstable
Review: I bought this cable modem about six months ago because I liked the idea of its compatibility (both electronically and aesthetically) with my existing Linksys wireless router. That big stack of blue plastic and blinking green lights can be strangely satisfying. However, as of late, when under high bandwidth conditions, the modem will stop sending any data. Its status lights indicate a connection to my home network, and to the internet, but its "Send" light will extinguish and the unit will refuse to transmit any information until it's unplugged and reset. Certain webpages seem to exacerbate this. After looking online, this seems to be a common problem. I currently have the "Version 2" of this modem, and supposedly linksys is now shipping the "Version 3." I'm returning mine tomorrow in the hopes that I can find one of the newer Linksys ones on the shelves and maybe I'll be able to keep my big blue stack.

Summary: Okay cable modem, does lock up sometimes
Review: I am a big fan of Linksys products. They've always been very affordable and get the job done. However, I would have to say this is my least favorite Linksys product. I bought it figuring it would look good on the "stack" with my Linksys router, switch and wireless AP.

Overall it works relatively well. However, in certain situations I ran into issues. If you run connection intensive applications that open many connections, the modem does have a tendency to lock up. Cycling power seems to correct this. I've seen other people post similar issues with connection dropping in certain situations. I am a software developer and often run applications that will open many simultaneous connections, so this was an issue for me. I have since switch modems and no longer have this issue.

Overall it works well, just requires the occasional shutdown/startup to clear it out.
