Summary: Works great with AT&T Cable
Review: Works great:
1) Get your Account # ready, and registration # (last 9 digits of Acct #)
2) Turn computer off
3) If you have a router, take it out of the loop, connect directly from computer to the modem thru ethernet port
4) Connect cables
5) Turn on cable modem, let boot up
6) Turn on computer
7) Goto registration page (you probably need to call AT&T Broadband for this info)
8) You are good to go... turn off computer, insert router (if you have one)

Summary: Lynksys Cable Modem
Review: Lynksys, A brand name I always trust for quality. The one I ordered was defective, But don't fret thats a rare for this company. Linksys has been int the networking business for a long time now and I will continue to buy their products, and I think you should to.

Summary: WinXP and USB connection not compatible yet
Review: It took a while to isolate the problem I was having with this modem - complete crashes virtually any time I attempted to download something or surf the internet - and it took a second phone call to Linksys support to get a tech who was familiar with this issue, but according to her the existing drivers will NOT work using the USB connection on a WinXP system. They are working to get updated drivers out. She said an ethernet card would resolve this problem. I spent an extra $11 locally on the ethernet card and cable and it now works perfectly. I was on hold for less than one minute both times I called their support line. And it worked fine with Win98 prior to my upgrade to WinXP. I'm very happy with it.

Summary: Worth Every Penny
Review: I was tired of the ...per month rental from the cable company and selected the Linksys BEFCMU10 as a replacement. I have used other Linksys products to build my home network and am quite pleased with the reliability, performance and most importantly the "price". The modem was nothing more than one 10 min telephone call to COX Communications with the MAC address and I was back on the net in 15 minutes.
Great product!! Buy it.

Summary: WORKS WELL WITH AT&T BROADBAND
Review: First I need to thank all of you guys who gave the Linksys cable modem 4 and 5 stars. If it had not been for your reviews I would have sent this great modem back to Amazon.

I spent 6 hours trying to get this modem working, getting help from 4 different techs at AT&T. They told me that this modem was bad and that the cable light needed to stay on and that the Linksys modem would not register with their system. They told me I needed to send it back and get another one. {ALL FALSE} So finally I told them to connect my (their) old modem back up. Their modem worked fine.

As I was getting ready to pack my new Linksys modem up to send it back to Amazon. I decided to try it one more time. Following the exact sequence they used to connect their modem. And would you believe it? It works!!!

My problems:
1. bad tech support.
2. must remove router to register modem.
3. given wrong registration address. (MOST IMPORTANT)
4. computer must be turned off before you turn on modem.

Fool proof procedure to be up and running in 10 minutes:

1. Turn computer off.
2. If you have a router, take it out of the loop. connect directly from your computer to the modem thru the ethernet port.
3. Connect the cable.
4. turn on power to the Linksys modem, allow it to boot up.
5. turn on your computer
6. go to the registration page to register your modem. You MUST do this twice, for some reason it does not work the first time. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT ADDRESS FROM AT&T. They failed to tell me I needed to use "https://" instead of "http://" it won't work without the "s"
enter your account # and registration #.
7. You should be working. Reconnect your router.

Summary: Fantastic Product!
Review: I have a pretty complicated configuration: Home network behind BEFSR41 Router, 3 different PCs, 3 different OSs (XP, 98, 95). I replaced a 3COM rental modem for my InsightBB service, and had no problems - the connection speed is even faster than before!

Do not get fooled: This modem works great with XP. Key is to call your Internet Provider and let them know about the new modem. I figure, the procedure might vary according to the knowledge of your provider's tech support. Here in KY they were great! They took me through all necessary steps: Main thing is to refresh the IP settings and register the new modem (at Insight that happens on a special screen, with which they will help you). According to other critics, you might have to insist on changing the MAC adress correctly, but do not give up. The performance and great price of this modem is definitely worth it!

Summary: Slow modem Poor quality product
Review: I bought this because of looks and price. However, it took me nearly 8 hours to get it to work with ATT and XP. Uggg.... And I noticed that connection speed was slower than the leased RCA modem. This modem was made of... plastics and didn't even look that good in person. It didn't have on/off button, which I use sometimes. Light indicators were not very informative and somewhat confusing. Poor quality product....

Summary: Wonderful Proformer
Review: The Linksys BEFCMU10 EtherFast Cable Modem has given us no problems. We have the Linksys 4-port router. Both the Linksys BEFCMU10 EtherFast Cable Modem and the Linksys 4-port router have had flawless preformance. Did have to give the cable company the MAC Address of the Linksys BEFCMU10 EtherFast Cable Modem and had to take the MAC address out of the router. We are using Millennium Cablespeed as our cable provider.

Summary: Great if you don't need to contact customer service.
Review: This product is great, but if you need to get help from customer service plan on waiting 30 to 60 minutes. After the elevator music stopped, the service was good courteous and helpful.

Summary: Comcast NJ users MUST call COMCAST with MAC Address
Review: Just revising my previous review. I have been experiencing intermittent failures of internet connectivity over long stretches of constant online time like 2-8 hours. I called COMCAST and they said that since their DOCSIS 1.0 implementation they have some sort of software application that runs around the network making sure that the MAC address that is linked to their leased IP address MATCHES the MAC address in their provisioning database. Since my Cable Modem had not been provisioned through Comcast, this software application would disconnect me for about 5-10 minutes at a time. After registration of the MAC Address, Serial #, and Model number, Comcast assures me (wink!) that this will never happen again.

BTW, I had an old Motorola Comcast provided modem that was non-DOCSIS compliant and did not have a MAC address and ever since the DOCSIS 1.0 conversion I had been experiencing the same thing but the frequency has increased. Of course, I never thought about the lack of a MAC address until I got the new modem.

Anyway, still a great deal, but just make sure your cable provider has all the information that they need.
